Frick is great, but a little love for the French Horns and Choir which were bringing incredible energy. The horns, especially. Wagner called for 8 and it’s tough to get a unified sound playing at full tilt like that.

If only Herr Wagner could have lived in the recording era...you can't help but feel that he'd be in his element, using the medium as part of the composition. Imagine having him in the control room, directing operations. Wonder what he'd make of it.

Frick is remarkable for his versatility. Yes indeed, his singing of Hagen for the Solti Gotterdammerung is the apotheosis of pure evil: a study in casual, disinterested malice that makes Neidlinger’s Alberich sound tamed and hesitating in comparison. However, Frick’s Hagen needs to be set aside his singing of Sarastro in Klemperer’s EMI Magic Flute, and his singing of Gurnemanz in Solti’s Parsifal: two performances distinguished by the most sublime virtue and spirituality, and without a trace of Hagen-like malevolence. Herr Frick could do it all!

I see what you mean. I think it comes from the massive volume of sound he has to put out, making it bit harder for him to control his voice. Nonetheless i still enjoy his singing of Hagens Call, in my opinion absolutely wonderful.
