Canis Lupus hat recht. Ich durfte Frick in Stuttgart auch zweimal in Parsifal als Gurnemanz erleben. Unvergesslich und unvergleichlich. Ein Bass uns vom lieben Gott in Vollkommenheit geschenkt. Kuno Zeller
Ergänzung: Ferruccio Furlanetto hatte spektakulären Erfolg an der Met, aber für mich etwas zu lyrisch. Bei Frick echt autenthische Trauer, Enttäuschung und tiefe sonore Bass-Lage. Einzigartig.

Bin immer wieder ergriffen von G. Frick, tolle Stimme. Würde das aber auch gern einmal von Sönke Thams Freier hören, ist ganz sicher genauso ergreifend.
In response to Moira Clegg, Frick does a sensitive rendition of Phillip’s great scene. Having sung this myself in French, German, & Italian, I find it somewhat easier to negotiate its requirements in the first 2 languages & yet I generally prefer the Italian version (even though it was first written in French) since over the years I have become more accustomed to dealing with the text & vocal interpretation in the Italian language. Frick’s interpretation is perhaps the best I have heard in the German language but nowadays with subtitles one finds more performances in either French or Italian even in Germany. The French language version I prefer comes from Jose Van Dam even though the entire role lies too low for his fine instrument. There are numerous excellent versions of the aria in Italian & at the present time Rene Pape impresses me the most.
Thanks for posting this - very interesting - such a voice - ABER….I don’t think this aria works in German somehow! But wonderful to hear him sing it. Such a colossal voice.
I heard that this role was a favorite of Gottlob Frick. Tells you a great deal about him, that he liked to sing this. For me, the most wonderful voice in the world.
Also I think it does work beautifully in German.
@@moiraclegg3380 I agree that it is a fabulous voice, but I can’t agree about it working well in German. I think he liked to sing it because every bass of his calibre and fach would want and need to have Philip II in his repertoire, and he sings it well, but for me, the German in this case destroys the legato. I would imagine he would have performed it in Italian or French at some point in his career but it’s interesting that on this record of arias he clearly chose to sing all of them in German. But the recording is a rare gem. With these great singers, we have so few remnants of them. It would be nice to have heard him sing it in Italian, but I guess we’ll have to make do with the German!

Ich würde gern eine Don Carlos Aufführung (in deutscher Sprache) auf DVD erwerben. Ich habe bisher nur eine Aufnahme von der deutschen Oper Berlin von 1965 gefunden. Kennt jemand noch eine andere, evtl. ist diese Arie ja aus einer Inszenierung, die man als Aufzeichnung kaufen kann.
Blubberator14 Nein, das ist eine Studio-Aufnahme. Aber Du kannst über die Gottlob-Frick-Gesellschaft e.V. erfahren, wo Du solche Aufnahmen bekommst. Ich bin übrigens in der glücklichen Lage, die meisten Parts die er je gesungen hat, noch auf richtigen ETERNA-Schallplatten (DDR) zu haben.
Verdi ha composto il don Carlos in lingua francese, poi egli la fece tradurre in italiano. Non certo in tedesco.
