  • Video showing Vienna Horns in F and Wagner Tuben, they are correctly called Wagner TUBEN (TUBE singular) (as in TUBES) and not TUBAS actually. Time and the need for a translation has changed that to tubas, just so you know (doubting Thomas's please look in the score).
This is here to lament the passing of a style of playing that is so rare to encounter these days - sheer uninhibited passionate unbridled and raw playing which has today been replaced by something more sterile and exact. I will blame conductors any day for wanting everything to sound the way a modern recording does. This is from the DECCA DVD "The Golden Ring" which is a Humphrey Burton documentary made during the recording of Götterdämmerung for the Solti Ring Cycle. Buy it from Amazon as well as the CDs with the definitive Siegfriedruf played by Roland Berger aged 21.

We were so lucky to have had Georg Solti making music for as long as he did. Wow.

I never saw this video before, though I'm very familiar with the recordings. It's no wonder the performances are so spectacular, look how vigorous Solti's conducting is. Astonishing!

@Arch5280 - So that he can be playing with extra support when his colleagues are taking a breath? Staggered breathing probably.

while you are correct that Wagner Tuben is plural, the singular is not Tube but in fact Tuba. 1 Wagner Tuba, 2 Wagner Tuben. In German, plurals are often formed with -en endings.

Great video. I have to ask - why does this channel disable embedding?

Why does the good professor 2nd trumpet breathe in the middle of a note?

@posaune1220 Das gilt nur wenn das Instrument "Tuba" heisst was nicht der Fall ist.
The instrument is Wagnertube in any language , there is no Wagnertuba in German, nor should there be in English really, please see the scores and writing of Wagner. Manufacturers of Wagnertuben in Germany, Engelbert Schmid for one, catalogue: Wagnertube
There are Tuba in both languages and the German plural of that is as you say. This instrument is not a Tuba, it is a Wagnertube, got it? :-)
