  • Welcome to our next video in our Season 03 Review series in collaboration with the Hits and Crits channel. This video focuses on covering the most important changes to the Free Folk faction. This video series will go faction-by-faction until all have been covered. This series' videos, in full collaboration with Hits and Crits, will rotate between our two channels. Be sure to subscribe to this channel and to Hits and Crits (link in description) so you can see all the videos in this series.
This series seeks to outline and discuss the most important changes to each faction from the Season 03 update. We won't go line-by-line through the Change Log. Instead, we will focus only on the highlights and talk about any new and interesting synergies and list-building opportunities that come to mind. Big thanks to Chris for his collaboration in this series and to all the rest of his crew at Hits and Crits for the uncharacteristically high production values for a video on my channel! Enjoy!

I personally feel Tormund is being slept on, especially in conjunction with Mag. too many times did I catch my opponents off guard with Counter Assault and/or Rush of Aggression. Tormunds cards also pair very well with Bear Riders

Thanks for the comprehensive analysis! I agree with most of it. I have only one point where I beg to differ: For me, the point reduction of "Mance Rayder, Deceptive Bard" (6 to 5) is quite impactful. The ability to lock down/shut off a unit (no horses, no heal, no swords, no assault orders, no influences etc.) adds a lot to the control game of FF, especially in times of "GCS meta". In addition to that, one well timed "Intrigue" (which Mance brings as a once per game effect) more often then not can be enough to turn the tide of game. In certain list archetypes he is a real competition for Ygritte (leaving Val or Craster at home is not an option) and, in my opinion, definitely a first class NCU now.

Great points! Under the right circumstances he can be game changing. Do you think he needs to be a build-around NCU, or is he a solid pick for you in one of two tournament lists, to handle some of those situations you mention?

@@imperialminis857From my experience, Mance works best with high activation builds (10 A+) like Varamyr (C) with Mag. That is where he can shine. For the regular 8 or 9 activation Styr list (like the one you presented) Ygritte probably still is the more efficient choice.

Excellent review, thank you. I play Lannisters and I am now deciding what another faction to add. I am choosing between Free Folk and Targarians. Would be great to see a similar review of the latter as well.

We will actually have our Targaryen review up on this channel in two weeks. At the end of this week, Hits and Crits will have the Night’s Watch video up on their channel.

Thanks a lor for that review. I have been looking for it but need to listen to it again without playing WOT :)
What do you mean by "playing Giants well"?
I am always impressed when I look at Mickey playing his FF.
And I really enjoy HArma for her movement potential which can turn your opponent crazy when she pivot before marching. Well at least until he corners and wipes out her paper unit :D

Thanks for the comment! I think by “playing giants well” I mean choosing your engagements properly, not overextending them too early, managing their health properly, etc. Basically just not sending them forward like a missile and hoping for the best.
Harma is definitely looking like even more fun now!

I watched this video once more after having not played for 3 months and 3 friendly games in the last 2 weeks. After playing Baratheon, I went to FF after the patch.
I played RATTLESHIRT with Chosen (+1 Followers + 1 Bear + 1 Raider + 1 Trapper) and 1 Followers vs a Jaimie Lannister list (2 City Watches + 2 Pyromancers + 2 NCU). This opponent list which was not "optimised" and which of course, had not been chosen to counter the moral orientation of my list, proved to be too resilient for me. FF do not seem to hit hard enough to deal enough damage and while engaging the Pyro fear the Horrific visage. The other game was against a Renly list with some healing combos and Thenns+Weeper proved to be a no match for the Rose Knights.
I also have not been playing in the best conditions as each time we played a card scenario were my 3 NCU were a pain in the dice compared to the 2 NCU of my opponent.
Bytheway, I found Rattleshirt difficult to use and not as fun as he looked like on paper. I tend to prefer his attachment version which seems more efficient and fun to play. And the fact that you can only attach a card to a short range unit when you destroy a rank seemed hard to optimize.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think that you "made a mistake" about the Rattleshirt order: the card he looks for can only be attached to the Chosen unit.
    Next game : STYR (+ 2 Thenns + 2 raiders + 1 Chosen/Rattleshirt + 1 Trapper + 2 NCU) vs a Renly healing combo list (RK, Riders, Warden, Pikemen, Thorn Watch + Olenna/Cortnay).
Same conclusion for the Thenns when opposed to RK. Except for the Chosen, the offensive hability of the FF is really weak (at least in my lists). One more thing Olenna is way too powerful vs a 2 NCU list.
I would like and will play other Generals (I already tried and really liked Harma) but I do not see a place for Rattleshirt and The Weeper. Tormund might be fun even if not a efficient than the offensive CiC of the other factions (Umber, ...) and Mance could be fun even if giving 1 more VP when destroyed.
Conclusion: I cannot do anything with my FF lists and don't see a way of improving my play style. I can blame the dice but hitting on 4 (too few Precision or Critical available) and saving on 4/5 is really harsh when compared to all the Precision/Crit given to the other armies and to the offensive power then can get through tokens (GJ) or abilities.
I also have the impression that the FF NCU do not give enough flexibility in their choice in a world where you can easily revive unit, counter NCU and use low point allies like Varys who is now in nearly every list. The 3rd Neutral NCU box gave those who can use them more flexibility and power while we are only building around the Hero 1 box.
Would you dive deeper in the FF tactics (Mickey is not often enough playing on internet to try to grab what can be done), this would be appreciated :D

Looking around YT I dont see anyone doing faction overviews for new players after the season 3 changes. Maybe you guys could do some.

That's a good recommendation, and something we might consider doing! With Season 04 presumably somewhere in the pipeline this Spring, it might make more sense for us to wait until that update drops before producing that content. We'd hate to get halfway through another faction-by-faction series, and then have a game update break in and make those videos obsolete. Thanks again for the suggestion!

I am thinking about buying a Free Folk army but this video might change my mind ... if they are so nerfed and hard to play, are they worth picking up?

If you’re paying attention to the faction rankings on ASOIAF Stats, Free Folk are currently #3 behind NW and Greyjoy, but they’re actually very close in ranking to the other seven main factions in the game. Free Folk are closer to the lowest ranked main faction (Targaryen) than they are to the next highest ranked faction (Greyjoys). So balance is currently very good, with NW and Greyjoys being outliers on the top end and Boltons being an outlier on the negative end.
You should really just play whichever faction appeals to you most. Faction balance ebbs and flows with each balance patch, but if you play a faction purely because it’s considered strong, you’ll move on to another faction after the next seasonal rebalance patch. Free Folk are still strong. The stats bear that out. They just can’t be as reckless with their horde style play as they maybe could have previously gotten away with.

@@imperialminis857 thank you very much for the answer. I am just learning my way around I only have a Lannister and a Stark army built from the Starter Set and quite a few additions but there is a good deal on a Free Folk army ... I do not yet know which faction appeals to me the most I like Lannisters but I started to also like Starks. I know I would not like Greyjoys or Baratheons or Martels. I think I would like Targaryen and maybe also Night's Watch.
I do like some aspects of the Free Folk like the giants and the animals and the mammoths. Just model wise - I do not know how they play. Thanks for the tip.

I’d recommend watching some battle reports from the factions you’re interested in. That should give you an idea how those factions play and whether that playstyle would appeal to you. Happy hunting!
