  • New dark-colored 8-inch Gulp baits came up big for me on this trip. It's best to bring along a variety of colors as fish tend to change their preference in response to environmental conditions, but this trip convinced me to always have some dark Gulp aboard. We finished the trip with a couple of surprise fish catches!

    We have winter flounder also in south jersey but the debate is NJ fish& wildlife label both as winter and summer which there is an obvious difference between the two and in this argument the reason why they're called "summer" flounder is because I the northeast the fish show up once the water temperature comes up unless you live in the southeast then they're considered resident fish because of the water temp, it is what it is but there is no denying the facts. Besides that Mr Skinner you are a legend in the making, great content as always....

    Do you find using the "J" hook that you gut hook fluke more often than if you had a circle hook on using just the gulp bait? If you have done a comparison.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 3 lety

      We don't use circles for fluke because we set the hook immediately and rarely deep hook anything. It's likely a circle would foul hook less fish.

    How long do you fish a Gulp bait before switching to a "fresh" one? Assuming it's still intact etc. Do they lose effectiveness after some period in the water?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 3 lety +2

      I've gotten in the habit of swapping baits out everytime it's convenient. My impression is that they definitely get washed out to some extent if in the water for 10 minutes.

      John and his friends all like the Berkeley. I’ve tried it and hated it. I’ve had too many break offs and frayed line. My superslickV2 never gives me a problem.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 3 lety

      Yes, and I've used both. If you snag bottom with X9 15# you'll have a heck of a time breaking it. Super Slick is good too. I think X9 is thinner diameter.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing First off You're a G. 2nd, i am now thanking my lucky stars that i bought a crap ton of camo gulp 2 weeks ago on a whim prior to this video dropping. If i could add my $0.02 on braid.. Been fishing braid since the flourescent yellow spider wire came out in the mid 90s. For Freshwater suffix 832 reigns supreme for me, in the camo color of course 🤣 but it fades and gets raspy quickly in saltwater. A few years ago powerpro released their maxcuatro line of braid which is 25% thinner than other braids. Its pricey but in my opinion it is top tier stuff.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 3 lety

      @@JoeyMo973 When I last checked the specs, Berkley X9 was even thinner than maxcuatro. Also, I believe maxcuatro is a 4-strand braid, so it's unlikely to be as smooth as an 8-strand. If I couldn't fish X9, Power Pro Super Slick might be my next choice. Smoothness is as important as thin diameter in reducing drag. If you like Power Pro, you might want to check out their Super Slick.

    another great video, I had my first chance to use the Dark Matter Skinner fluke rod this weekend on a Nantucket fluke trip and had a blast using the rod. I ended up having to use 6oz bucktails to stay on the bottom but honestly on a few drifts I could have used even more weight, the currents in the Nantucket shoals are pretty strong. I intend to enjoy this rod for a long time but I am curious about your thoughts and recommendations on rods and low profile bait casters that can handle up to 16oz of weight. I know its not your forte but I'm sure you have had to go heavy now and then.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 3 lety

      With 15# braid I have not needed to go heavier than 6 ounces ever at Montauk or Block. That rod will handle slow jigging 8+-ounce weights. I think the Accurists would survive, but something like a Maxel Hybrid 20 would be better.
