Thanks for sharing some Tips and Tricks Mr. Skinner
Hands down one of the BEST FISHERMAN on the tube. Gear set ups superb. Boat organized not so much !! I have a quick course on minimal boat organisation. Lol. Looking forward to seeing you in a newer boat for SURE.
I can’t believe a boat dealer won’t offer to “loan” you a boat it’s becoming a safety issue
True fisherman just find a way to get it done. You are at the very top of those fishermen Mr. Skinner.
Thanks a lot for talking about structure, for some of us figuring out where to fish is a big part of what we're missing! More screenshots and how you interpret what you're seeing would be awesome. Don't want your spots, just want to get better at finding my own. Where I am there's lots of dredged deep channels between flats and almost too much structure to choose from, not all of it holds fish.
Love the positive attitude especially when everything was breaking down and you losing the big fish of the day. Winter is coming, good time to repair the deck and maybe re wire and freshen up that old tin girl of urs
Always great information you give John 👍🏼 Thanks and enjoyed the video
Nice video, John. Added another technique to the arsenal. Love your enthusiasm and appreciate your effort. I know your a minimalist at heart and can take care of yourself out there but your also a role model. Some guys watching this video may assume that they can cut corners on maintenance and suddenly find themselves in big trouble. Take care.
You keep your boat in immaculate condition. Keep safe John.
Hey John!! Pulling up and oldie but a goodie in preparation for snap jigging stripers in the south Jersey bays and rivers. Had a great year last year, but alas, I hadn't started my CZcams channel yet. March 1st is opening day for the bays and estuaries in NJ. Can't wait!
Great video Mr Skinner, cool to see you fishing some uncharted territory
I don’t know the area, I don’t know what I’m gonna go for, I brought 6 rods and somebody told me about this way to try and I caught the hell out of everything. Sea bass, stripers, blue fish and even had a shot at some albies, Nice. Fish magnet! Great video, thanks. Oh yeah, try not to put your foot through the deck.
Time for a new boat John.
Oh no skinner snap jigging he already catches all the fish lol nice job as always
Love these videos. Thanks John
That’s troubleshooting is so me! too funny “keep the party going”
40 years ago (!) we caught blues & stripers trolling bucktails on wire line. You needed a good hard snapping motion. J&B shovel nose jigs w/swing hook were the best.
sweet video as usual dude
keep the vids coming
Great videos and you're so humble. Be safe.
Good video as always !
absolutely slayed the fish i envy you so much
Hello there, You caught so nice fish, You have a new techniques on using lures, very cool, I only went ocean fishing once of a pier, awesome job, take care
"oh God, that exciting Sh*t" Pearls John. Pearls!
Stay safe out there...I'm going to give that technique a try my next time out
Hey John, I just picked up a 16' 1986 starcraft mariner center console and it's got a 1975 mercury 50hp motor with a 1986 mercury 9.9 kicker.. I was worried about taking the trip thru the Manasquan inlet to the axel carlson reef but you have proven this is more than possible.. Thank you for taking the time publishing this video.
Sounds like a sweet package! Careful - this is Long island Sound. Passing through an ocean inlet is much more dangerous. I wouldn't do it without a flat ocean and incoming current.
hard to believe the striped bass king who wrote a book on fishing the bucktail has never retrieved it like this before
I don't boat fish for bass much, and normally I would 3-way this scenario. The lighter outfit was the attraction here. Lots of fun!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing lol I'm just messing with ya, it's definitely a lot of fun. I guess the trade-off is the possibility of breaking off a big fish. thanks for sharing!
I love how he narrates his videos
I see all the calls for a new boat. And I agree Mr. Skinner is more than deserving. But this is the “new boat.” In the sense I haven’t been following all that long and remember when this one replaced the prior one. Sure, this one needs some TLC, but I’ve always appreciated John’s “Common man” vibe and Uncommon fishing abilities. Not saying a new boat wouldn’t be nice, just saying John’s proved time and again, great fishing is more than the gear. It’s so much more about the fundamentals. That’s why I appreciate him so; he gives me hope. (And yeah, a-nother boat next season wouldn’t surprise me either).
Agreed. When my boat leaks a bit of water I don't throw it on the scrap heap. I just fix it.
Its an old Tin can, with nice motors front/back, electronics. The guy loves to fish... keeping it real for those of us living on a tight buget....
Love ur vids
After seeing that you used john's tarantula bucktails i was wondering when you were going to try this
Good vid. Also a good way to fry your electronics with no in line fuse .......
It helps to have the navionics app on your phone. If your fish finder ever goes out at least you have that.
What would be the right properties to look for in a rod to do the snap jigging technique? What rod would you recommend and what size reel?
Great video as always, would like to know what kind of a teaser are you using with the bucktail?
I’ll put in some nice new floors for you if you drive that thing over the sound to CT lol.. could also get you on tons of tog and big stripers right now.. floors could be done in a day of work btw
Where exactly in the sound was that? Can you please answer me I want to try it out
Hey John can you show how you make some of your rigs?
Love that boat. Rockin and rollin out there.
I have a feelin we might see a different boat next season
@@JohnSkinnerFishing gonna go for that fishing rigged jet ski you tested a few months back?? Maybe not for primary use but it would be good for windless days for scooting around the Peconic Bay!
It wasn't the gulp juice this time, but skill & knowledge, nice going. Jigging with a bucktail, i'll have to try that.
I wonder how many subscribers you need before MAKO gives you a new 23 footer. Hopefully soon. Love your work.
That was a great video. One of my favorites. I like how you just went out and didn't really have a plan and tried some new technique and had a great day. Great catches on Sea Bass and Stripers. Do you keep the Bluefish? I enjoy a Bluefish meal myself. Nothing beats Sea Bass and Fluke though.
I don't keep blues, bass, or weaks. I like eating the bottom fish better.
I have submarine and hummingbird and hummingbird is so thiniky to turn or not ,re done the connection and still never know when it want to work and when not
Hey John, do you recommend any gloves when handling crabs when fishing for Blackfish?? Just something that will make the pinching of the crabs not as painful.
Love your videos Mr. Skinner. I've learned so much over the past 5-6 years watching the videos, some 4 & 5 times. Let your viewers help you now. I'll donate $50.00 towards a new boat. You've earned it. Tell me where to send the money.
Hello John from Newport up the coast. Have you been blackfishing? Lots of good togs up here now with water around 63. Fun video.
Hello thank you for the great footage and helpful tips! I plan on fishing a land locked body of water with stripped bass in it. Would you recommend me using those buck tails ? I really like the look of them. Also would you use a gulp at on the jig ? Thanks 🙏
I would definitely try that. I don't use Gulp for stripers, except worm trolling, but Gulp grubs would work fine.
What a nice set up for your rod&reel. I have a penn 25nld fathom, I just don't know what rod to get for that reel. Any advice
Try the Ugly Stick Tiger Lite series. I have 5 and they can take a licking and keep on ticking. Tough rods and light weight
i never knew there was a name for this technique but my buddy and I kill weakfish under bridges snap jigging with bucktails and medal jigs
I have a feeling that boat will be getting a new floor and bilge over the winter
Nice
in skinner we trust
what kind of bucktail? is there anything on it
Hey john, always warms my heart when you are out in your boat, being an owner of a leaky 85 17' sea nymph aluminum center console. Oh are all the comments for a new boat willing to send in donations, do they have any idea the cost of new boats these days.
Just curious do you have a name for your boat. My boat model is the striper, my kids would call it the stripper, so thats its unofficial name since do not have a name on it. Thanks for all your videos, tips and techniques. Tight lines !
No name for the boat. It gets a lot of rude comments, but it does the job well. It's 46 years old but I've owned it for only 4 of those years. I've never been able to get paint to stick to the floor, which is now old enough that it needs replacing.
Good video what are you marking those fish on the fishfinder and Did you think about using a jig strip
I think jig strips and otter tails are pretty much the same thing. Either would work, as would pork rind.
Good tip on the Humminbird card. Navionics cards works well, but it seems they’re getting greedy with their options and pricing.
Navionics is really a bummer when you turn on your unit in NY and realize it has the Florida card inside. This is great that the Coastmaster has all of the regions on one card.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing John is there a mobile app for the coastmaster? Great video!
I see you listed the leader you use, but how many pound test floro carbon leader we are using, 40 pound test comes up on the J and H link you posted.
What’s that blue rod you were using when you saw the albies in the beginning?
We use snap jigging in the Chesapeake it is extremely effective for cobia stripers bull reds bluefish and weak fish
Do you use just a plain Bucktail or does it have bait on it? Thanks
John. Does the Bucktail have anything on it a mullet gulp or any thing else.
How do you get down to the bottom drifting at 2.5 mph with a 1 1/2 ounce bucktail? How deep are you fishing?
I fished two spots here - 60-65' and 40-45'. It works because I'm using a thin and smooth 8-strand braided line. I used 10-pound test, but I think 15# Berkley X9 braid that I use for deep fluking would work well too while allowing me to fish a tighter drag.
Time for a new boat
Hey john are you just tying a dropped loop for that swing hook buck tail? Or are you using a tactical clip?
John, what color braid do you suggest for the snap jigging? I know better visibility was suggested by Paduano.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Wasn’t planning on it. Just wondering in terms of better visible line if you think white or red or yellow etc is better. Thanks.
Wish id found this before buying a big surf rod for blues
Check out Chesapeake light tackle by Shawn Kimbro... he snap jigs big rockfish with bass gear
Hey John look up a man named Shawn Kimbro. He’s on yt and this is his style of fishing. He reminds me of you a lot and he fished the Chesapeake bay here in va. You might find him interesting.
John when the weather permits do a review or a boat cleaning video. LOL
Well everyone has an opinion about what they think is safe in a boat , the only concerned area he should have is the leak. The flooring can be replaced easily. The wiring of the sonar easily done as well. He feels safe in the boat and knows it so eh , rock and roll. I personally like better organization but i'm a kayak fisherman , every inch of space has a specific item for it. Oh the Hi vis line though. Even though I typically use Mono Stren Hi Vis Yellow or Hi vis blue. I do have to say that as far as visibility to fish , red is the best line to use for any depth below about 10 feet. I'll tell ya why. In the color spectrum as you go deeper , certain colors fall off of the spectrum making them virtually invisible. Red is the first color to go. Blues and greens are the last. Now , when it comes to near the surface depth , less than 10 feet , or say shallow flats , the hi vis blue actually helps because the sky is the backdrop for most fish attacking a target above them. The line blends in with the sky. In shallows , red would probably be highly visible and worst color to use.
John, what knot do you prefer to tie 10lb braid to a leader?
I go through a barrel swivel, palomar on the braid, clinch on the leader.
What is it about the bottom or area that drew you to that spot? What are you looking for when choosing an area to fish?
Irregular bottom structure, boulders, humps, on a point washed by strong current.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you. Shortly after I wrote that you talked about that on the video. One thing I’m working hard on is learning to identify good spots. Thanks! Love the info!!
John, was fishing open south shore beach at night, had two instances of something grabbing bomber, nearly spooling out surf rod, and eventually snapping/shredding 40lb mono leader. Any idea? Would a dusky hit a bomber?
What reel and pound-test line and were you leaning hard on the fish?
Also, was this recent, or in the warmer months? If it was during the summer, then probably a shark.
Two nights ago, 30lb braid to 40lb mono. Hit real close to beach and took off. set hook, drag was loose enough for small stripers to have a run. I slightly torqued drag to limited the run and braid snapped/was cut a few seconds later. No let up from that run and drag was still plenty loose. Re-rigged identical setup and first cast was identical situation. This time line came back w/leader and the entire 2ft length was shredded. Obviously toothy creature.
How do you get power knob on your reel?
I post a video without a power knob and Michael at Jigging World has pity on me and sends me one. Check with them for that.
Can you share your waypoints
ayeee
are you dropping the bucktail to the bottom here? where in the water column are you fishing
As I said in the narration, it's important to stay near the bottom.
Check out Shawn Kimbro. He’s a pioneer in snap jigging the Chesapeake bay. Started doing last year and haven’t looked back.
Do you replace the ottertails on every trip?
John Skinner Fishing thank you and I really appreciate your books and content!
Didn't I see a video where you had a new bottom under your feet on this boat?
do you think you can get away with using your carbon shield setup for this type of fishing?
The rod isn't right. The action is too fast. Can't "snap" the jig with it. Reel is fine.
glad to see the boat does not make the man,1977 grady 1976 evenrude
I bet he made a phone call to his brother, he seems like a great mechanic like when you’re steering went bad....
I have much respect for your fishing skills. Your boat maintenance skills, not so much. Start with WD-40 on every wire and connection on the boat.
Paduano is featured in an older video showing his technique. A more explosive snap pulling back and up. Thanks for the video czcams.com/video/0WKn1CcSVJU/video.html&feature=emb_logo
Can’t wait for next fluke season.
Abu Garcia pro strike
John I think you need to start a "go fund me" for a new boat. Thank for another great video !
Noice
paid $5.00 for that boat too....
I don't think you play that bucktail "wrong" if you're catching fish. People can do exactly like they were told or shown and not catch a damn thing, while others can just mess around all over the place and pull fish out left and right.
Man he must have caught alot of shit with that last name. Bet he can fight!
Another good Video Thanks !!! But buy a new Boat !!! lol.
shit no, don't vacuum the damn leaves out! come on John take care of your boat and it will take care of you, you know better
Splicing a grounded hot wire while wearing a wedding ring and sinking slowly. I say this out of years of subscription : For fucks sake John spend some money.
John, Do you still have the first nickel you earned?!!! Beginning to understand why your friends don't go fishing with you in that boat!
No, I do not have the first nickel I earned. I expect that is somewhere at Princeton University, where it and many other nickels went for my daughter's college education. Or maybe it's in upstate NY where my son went to college.
Just add a few more commercial breaks to fund your repairs why dontcha 🙄
Is there a dis-like button for your boat? Yikes
I gotta say, there's always a calmness in your voice. Your like the Bob Ross of the Sea!!!
The a fish whisperer!
