skilled ? Gulp doesnt make you skilled it might help the believers but understanding water movement ,structure ,wind ,and lastly presentation is skill that takes time to learn ,not sticking your fingers in a smelly can of douche water lmfao !

Thanks Mike!! Yeah the grass and also, if I can be candid...I do keep in mind the footage I need to capture to make things interesting on the channel haha...the grub was a test, and I was going to put it through its paces. Rest assured I did pick up the jerkbait after that session was over!

I like the spinner in the gulp idea!!I’ve tried in-line spinner with a plastic shad on trailing hook (panther Martin weedrunner I think it is) with a dab of procure. It is fun - fluke go nuts - good for when there is a lot debris in shallow water. If shallow enough, you can even switch and use it cross-current and suspend in zone. Im going to look up the spinner w/gulp though and try that this summer too. Thanks for the idea.
Just started watching all your videos and I think I'm going to convert from the bucktail teaser rig. Can you talk about how you pick your spots from shore? Back bays with long flat bottoms, or do you look for steeper drop offs? Does it work as well ocean front with heavy breaks? Can you cast it out to the second break with the light rod or do you focus on the first break, etc? Will this work in an inlet with a very fast current? Thanks for the videos!
It works everywhere, 99% of the time 1/4oz is all you need, if tide is ripping in inlets could bump up to 3/8oz, always casting up current no matter where you're fishing. If I can find deep water access nearby I will focus on that, though many spots are flat do-nothing spots that hold fish. Explore and experiment, there's a lot of variables but compared to other fisheries fluking is relatively simple - jighead, gulp, done.

The mullet has a thinner tail and quicker thump - and is shorter overall.
Where in the world were you fishing to catch that many fluke in such a short period?
Do you guys ever fish when the water is dirty or does the water clarity very important. Thanks for the video's really helping catch more fluke with single jig technique.
Thanks! Water clarity is relative - meaning if an area is generally 3ft of visibility, those fish can hunt and feed in it just fine. If the clarity then drops to 1ft, after a storm etc, then they can shut off for a bit. But it's the same as fish living in 15ft vis going to 10ft vis...they act strange for a few days. Whenever the water visibility drops and if I'm not getting bit jigging the usual way, I pay attention to keep my jig closer to the bottom, and giving it just a second longer pause in between lifts.
Would you use the Gulp 4" Grub on a 3/8, 1/2 or even 3/4 jighead. If so, which jighead would you suggest? It's a little tough to fish my surf area with anything less than 3/8 unless conditions are "very" calm.
I haven't used it on anything over 1/4oz, but you can go heavier though you would need a smaller hook size. Honestly if you go over 3/8oz just use the 5" grub or 6" jerk shad imo.

I had a little white lure like that and cut the tail off of it. Threw that in and got a bite soon after.

Oh yea. Last year I crushed them on the pink shine 4 inch grub on a 1/4 jig head. Casting off a jetty. Mimicked shrimp living in between the rocks. All the fluke were spitting them up.

Battling with the concept of keeping the presentation in the same direction and speed as the current … my logic says that negates the fluttering action of the tail of the plastic (clearly not as you still nail them) … is it then the vertical motion which keeps the flutter action as opposed to the horizontal motion? See you OTW
Haha thanks Brad!! I should've said "approximately" the speed as the current...the way I'm fishing the light jig from shore, it's more of a horizontal glide on tight line than it is a vertical drop on slack line, like I'll do in deeper water from a kayak/boat. As long as you're traveling close to the speed of the current any weed that hits your line will take much longer to travel down to your jig, and you'll have a longer window with a proper presentation on the business end.

New to saltwater fishing and need a rod and reel to start. I want something all purpose for fluke and stripers and bluefish. Any recommendations on a reliable rod and reel?
"all purpose" = a rod/reel that's not perfect for anything. I mean your average keeper sized fluke is what - 3lbs? an average bluefish is 10? 30lb stripers aren't uncommon during the Spring/Fall runs. You can overlap striper and bluefish setups but including fluke is a stretch. If you want the perfect fluke setup, I have various options listed in the description.
Im much more comfortable with grub then jerk shad. I think it has better action and is easy to use.
The 6" jerk shad is special - and once you learn how to use it it's hard to put it down. But it's fun to experiment every now and then for sure.
Related question: How much Gulp do you go through when fishing? For example the 6" Jerk Shad I am finding to be quite expensive based on how easy it is for a fish to render the Gulp useless(I have a feeling Berkeley has this designed on purpose this way and no competitors because of their patent still holding).
It depends...I've gone through 8+ packs in one trip but that bite was insane...I'd say average 3-4 packs per session? Nowadays it's rare I don't pick up the jerkbait for at least part of the trip - and while losing a $20 jerkbait once in a while to blues hurts, that's just a couple of packs of gulp when you cost it out lol.
@@CookingandFishing Got it. Ok at least then this is basically cost of doing business and I'm not doing anything wrong. The Jerk Shad seems to be the worst Gulp i've used for longevity. I don't mind spending a good money on a rod but it is annoying when these baits are that brittle for the price.
@@vlcthefish Yeah I mean it comes down to what your priorities are - catch a limit and go home? That could be done with less than a pack of jerk shads, unless blues/puffers are around lol. People are using Zman Elaztech jerkshads + procure or other scents - they'll catch fish and they'll last all day, but the numbers pale in comparison to gulp. Hard baits like my jerkbaits are the cleanest and certainly most economic presentation...but they are pretty situational and the skill barrier is much higher.
yes Berkeley has a patent on this.....i believe its like a biodegradable yam powder/paste. tons of fisherman have noted Gulp formula has gotten softer over the years.
@@telford2155 The Konjac powder was the first generation of Gulp - they're now using some kind of artificial water-based matrix that's probably extruded. Keep in mind they are not just making gulp for fluke...and in other fisheries anglers demanded softer materials. I personally prefer the softer gulp bc it gives the bait much better action underwater. The reality is w/e material it's made from it's wildly inconsistent - some packs will come out rock hard and rubbery and some fall apart literally in your hands.

Wherever this spot is, it's flounder heaven country. In the MD Chesapeake bay, I could work all day and won't catch more than 6 to 8 fish. And maybe 2 will be slots.

Curious as to sea robins. For every 10 fluke you get about how many sea robins?
Depends on location and timing - and here's the thing...a searobin bite is very different from a fluke bite. Once you dial that in you can pull your jig away from robins before they get the hook.

I'll dip the bait after making a move between spots, or if I take a break - gotta keep them moist lol. Generally speaking if I'm not getting bit within 10, 15 minutes I'm changing color/profile anyway.
Noticed that you're using 22# braid. Have you decided to step it up? I usually do 8# and 10#
22lb YGK is PE1 - which is roughly 6lb US braid diameter.

It's situational - I explain the advantages of the 4" in the video - but the 6" will always catch...esp if you're fishing deeper water like jetties/inlets/channel edges etc or from a boat.

The only jerkshad I throw is the 6" version, not much point to the 5" jerkshad imo. 5" mullet is also a good peanut imitation.

Conservation works! Last year caught nothing but shorts. This year they are everywhere! The porgies are weaker this year. I think we over-harvested them last year. I think the stripers will be even better next fall with the slots this year. I know the rules suck but it works!
