FIAT Panda 100HP Review - Is The Abarth 595's Budget Cousin The Better Car?

  • Today I am driving another affordable fun car - the FIAT Panda 100HP. Produced from 2006 until 2010, when emissions regs killed it off, the 100HP version of the second generation Panda has gained a cult following. Today you still need to pay a third of the original asking price to get your hands on one - so I'm seeing if it would be worth taking the plunge.

I used to own a panda hp, drove it over to Turin, then down to the south of France and back home again. Covered 2,300 miles and it didn't miss a beat. Driving a panda hp through Italy was a really special experience. I think it's a wonderful little car.

Great review, cracking little cars and I love mine! Here is an interesting fact, the Panda 100HP has a closer relationship with the Abarth 500 than you think. When Abarth was being re-launched by Fiat as a stand alone brand, the Abarth Panda 100HP was to be the first car in the line up, however at the last minute the plans were changed and the Panda 100HP was launched and badged as a Fiat instead. At the last minute it was deemed not powerful enough, and too close of a car to the forthcoming Abarth 500. So instead of the Abarth Panda 100HP, we got the Abarth Punto as the first car in the new Abarth line-up. It does cause a lot of debate in the Panda 100 community, but some people badge their 100 HP's as Abarths. Another fun fact, if you go to a Fiat dealer for parts, the 100HP is still listed internally on the Fiat parts system as the Abarth Panda 100HP. Thats how close it got. The Fiat Panda 100HP is the Abarth that never was...

Change gear after 5000? No way. Fill it with 99 or 100 octane. And the knock sensor will allow you to pull all the way to 7.000. It starts to pull at 4500 and flies after 5500.
(Both of mine are like that)
They are Italian horses. You need to whip them to get going.
P.S. To the owner of this car. Your car looks good!

James, I had one back in 2016, and I loved it. I've had a long list of cars, but this and my Accord Type R are the two that I always remember with a smile; should have kept both! The country roads in Rutland meant that I bounced around quite a bit but it was great fun and surprisingly good on long journeys. Its early bluetooth worked well and I could fit my two (much smaller then...) sons in for the school run. Enjoyed the "club" feel of flashing other 100hp owners - we could recognise each other half a mile away.

I have a 100hp (we’ll it’s the wife’s) and I have a 595, I always love driving the 100hp. It’s not as fun as the the Abarth in my opinion but it’s still a riot. Handling with Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres is amazing. Took it over the Brecon Beacons and it was glorious. Also reliable in the 4 years we have had it. The turning circle is embarrassing as the Punto 6 speed box limits the steering rack. Nice sound too, much deeper than you would expect.

My son just bought one as his first car after first looking at several tatty over-priced Fiestas. More fun to drive than just about anything else this cheap to insure.
The driving position is very short-legged and long-armed and at 6'1" I find it a bit awkward, but you get used to it.
The engine is punchy and revvy with a very linear response. The handling is superb and, as Jay says, forgiving.
It's an old school hot hatch that will put a smile on your face at modest speeds.

Tips for anyone tall (over 6ft) who wants one of these. If you can find one with a height adjustable drivers seat, it helps a lot. And on all Pandas and 500s the footrest by the clutch is too small if you shoe is over a size 9. Easily fixed, top part of footrest is just plastic and can be removed with a sharp knife and then up to size 12 will fit!

With a Fruity exhaust and a decent intake system they make a good sound, just very hit and miss if you get a good one or not. Before me I’m fairly sure mine was more then abused as it almost breaks on the weekly. As it sits currently there’s no gearbox as it’s broken for the 4th time, and will most likely need a whole new box for the sum of £650. Still love the thing to bits despite it being a little bastard.

I've been waiting for you to review one of these for so long. I bought one a few years ago when I'd just bought my first house, had no money, and needed a station hack that could still put a smile on my face and do the estate car thing when needed.
On the standard dampers, its back end gets quite skippy and that nearly sent me off on a road I knew very well, so I also fitted Koni rear dampers, and replaced the budget tyres with Goodyear Eagle F1s. After that, it was totally docile and a real hoot.
I later paired it with a Jaguar XK 5.0 and yet the Panda still offered something that made me want to grab its keys. Now replaced by a Suzuki Swift Sport, which is a better car in many ways, but has none of the charm of the little Fiat.

For sure they both are good propositions for young petrolheads, for swift the pros are better interior and exterior design, better suspension and higher revy engine but 100hp has 6-speed gearbox and second pair of doors. What is funny is the fact that 100hp were produced here in Poland but there are not a lot for sale. i think exterior and interior design are subjective, and for me the Swift design exterior and interior dashboard of the first version 2005-2010 is not youthful at all but very mature even if it has a much better made exterior/interior and more powerful and torquier 1.6 engine, for a much more expensive purchase price. As you said it has a 5 speed also and 2 doors, whereas the Panda has a 6 speed box with a very touring car gearstick position, high up, and more practicality with 5 doors. The Panda has a nice sporty instrument cluster speedo and tach side by side with ancillary gauges in between like alfas i owned in past, which i would not say of the Swift Sport 05-10, but both are fun and sporty cars to drive and own.

I think one of if not the best thing about the 100hp (admittedly not something you would find out from just driving it) is the community of owners, always helpful and willing to share knowledge. I've seen toxicity in other car owner groups which you would never see in Panda/100hp groups.

I've had one since august 2020. Came with a leaking head gasket but it wasn't too bad to replace. I've just ordered the 284mm Abarth front brake calipers, which will still fit under the standard 15 inch wheels. T-Jet swap is coming hopefully in a year when I have the time. But economical, it is not! 7-7.4 L/100 km. But actually, I do love the way it looks. It's the sleekest way one can design a box on wheels.

You can feel like Niki Lauda without breaking the law. It drinks a lot (even oil) but it still is no Jag. Low insurance and TCO. Parks everywhere. You can load a fridge in it. Four doors. Doesn't try to cosplay a 60s car. Best car for mountain passes ever (if you don't go into turbo altitudes). I just love it

A really fun car yes, but more practical than people realise. Put those back seats down and it is a large box space inside. I remember selling a large fridge to a friend at work. It fitted in my Panda no problem. In the office carpark, we tried to transfer it to his Peugeot 206. It didn't go in. He then tried to get it into a mates late fiesta, then a clio and a polo. It didn't get into any of them. It required his dads Focus Estate to complete the fridges journey.

Just loved mine. Thrashed it everywhere, put a nice little exhaust on it when the original rusted through, and sorted the bouncing a bit with some different rear shocks. Fantastic gearbox, decent engine, spoiled a bit by crap throttle response and sticky steering. But as a bit of fun, pretty much unbeatable. Mine started using a bit of oil at around 80k miles and I swiftly moved it on.
I think if I ever get a little money I'd pick one up again as a 3rd car runaround.

Hi James, thanks for the honest review (as always) and I must admit to wanting to try one these out at a young 59. Cars should be fun and this certainly looks that. Back in the early nineties I had a Lancia Y10 Turbo which was based on the original Panda and I imagine this 100HP Panda to be very much in the ilk of the Y10. I would buy another Y10 Turbo tomorrow but with 'How Many left' showing none on the road and 14 SORNed that is not likely to happen. How are the seats in the 100HP ? like you I am a stout chap...

It revs beautifully and has 123bhp with a 1-tonne weight. Can you do a Puma video?

Here in Argentina the 1.4 fire is the motor of choice for many models of Fiat. Now they launched a modern version 1.3 99 hp. The 1.4 is cheap, efficient, and you can use it on gnc (natural compresed gas). It can last 400.000 to 500.000 km if you are careful with the maintence.

    • @TheVeenmeister
      @TheVeenmeister Před 2 lety

@@thedetailingdoctor5746 Yes they are pretty capable. Tough a couple of things can be optimized to make it a bit better.
The standard shocks are basically from the regular Panda, paired with stiffer springs. Changing them wil be such a different experience. Lowering it will slightly improve handling as well. The ARB does help as well, but the main issue are the shocks.
Second.. tyres. This one has Conti Sport Contact 2. The design of this specific tyre comes from the 90's. My dad had these on his Golf II. Changing them to something better will be an amazing improvement. Using Uniroyal RainSport 5 now as the 100HP uses an odd sized tyre these days. 50 instead of 45 tires would be better. Can be fitted without lowering btw...
Standard brakesystem is already pretty capable. It comes from the Stilo which is 300kg heavier. You might want to change some pads, but not specifically necessary. Good disks and pads should do the job...
