It’s time for a video you didn’t realise you needed in your life… Until today!
We’ve brought in the Fiat Panda Cross to go head-to-head against the Tesla Model X across a series of off-road challenges!! We know what you're thinking - this might be one of our most ridiculous comparisons yet! But let's see how they compare.
Starting with the Fiat, it’s powered by a 900cc 2 cylinder turbocharged engine, which has the ability to put down 85hp and 145Nm of torque. It comes equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and it weighs just 1,165kg.
It’s fair to say the Model X is the total opposite of the Panda! Powered by two electric motors, it can put down 417hp and 660Nm. When it comes to weight, it’s heavier than two Pandas combined, tipping the scales at over 2,500kg!
The question is, can a £95,000 EV triumph over an £18,500 Fiat off-road? It’s time to find out!

It costs about £50k-£120k, is amphibious and can handle virtually all kinds of off-roading, including boulders, fallen trees etc. I know it's a rare example, but my point is that the price tag isn't the primary reason. I think it just has to be that much better at off-roading to be worth it. The Model X is not even close to a proper off-road car, and this test also clearly demonstrates that, if anyone was ever in doubt. Would I buy a fiat?.. No, because the only one I'd trust was built correctly is the panda and even at that they have a habit of killing the occupants if they crash with even a dirt bike. If I lived out in France or Italy and ran vine yards I would have one as that's all they use out there, that or a scooby forester. Everything else including LRs don't seem to work right on wet grass. No joke that's all they own out there, two pandas or panda and forester and a road legal versions of some dirt bike. They spend their wonga on boats and have hobbies, unlike most of the UK where most spend their wages on an unreliable disposable financed car and latest moby handset. Who's the morons? So what they do under sustained higher load scenarios is inject extra fuel (but no air) to just cool those parts down. Its part of the downsizing trend which isnt an issue when the fuel consumption is tested for. Also apparently another side effect is that due to higher pressures and more parts (especially the turbos) on the engine that in recent years engine repairs have become more expensive and more frequent.

Its a problem with how the fuel consumption figures are tested for. Long story short. The smaller your engine and the bigger the turbo on it the higher you will be above the claimed fuel consumption figures while its the opposite for bigger engines. In the light of that I opted to go for Mazdas 2 liter skyactiv x engine 2 months ago. After 4000 km now of autobahn and city driving my average fuel consumption is 5.5 litres.

A good few years ago we visited a national park on a hilly area. I have seen the park service replaced their cars just recently, about half of them were Land Rover long trucks, the other half were Lada Nivas (both new). I was a bit baffled. I knew Niva was popular but I thought mostly because it was cheap. I approached a guy and asked them did they have to buy the Nivas instead of more LRs due to financial limits but he told me the larger cars like the Land Rover were nearly not as nimble and maneuverable, too big for a lot of forest roads, had too large a turning radius and were also too long. If they had to carry something up with a team of workers, tools etc then it was the Land Rover's job. But if you only needed one or two guys up the hillside with a few hand tools the Niva was much more capable, though it only had a petrol engine of 1.6L, about 70-75hps. Even today that Nivas are out of favour for some time it"s only the Suzuki Jimny/Samurai that is close to the same capability.

A great fun video, but not really a fair comparison, as the Tesla has no real pretensions to being an off-road vehicle. And as the guy said, the thing that makes a really big difference, particularly in the snow, is the tyres. A 2wd with winter tyres on the driving wheels will be better in the snow than a 4wd with summer tyres.
But the biggest difference between a Panda and cars like the Tesla is the sense of FUN! I've got a Panda and a Mercedes, and although I always use the Merc for long distance, and it's a great car, I would never describe driving it as fun. But driving the Panda is genuine fun, particularly in snowy weather. In fact, when it snows I'll take the Panda out on uncleared roads just for the sheer enjoyment of driving it. Even though the engine's small it's really willing, and because the car's so light it's like driving a go-kart. I love it 😍
