Now this is what you call a S3XY drag race line-up!
We’ve got every Tesla you can buy (and actually drive!) going head-to-head over the 1/4-mile to see just how different their performance is. So let’s look at the contenders.
Starting with the Tesla Model S Plaid, it’s powered by three electric motors, and they combine to deliver 1,020hp and 1,420Nm of torque. It tips the scales at 2,190kg, and if you’re looking to buy one it’ll cost you around £116,000.
The Model X Plaid is built on the same platform, so it delivers the exact same power - 1,020hp and 1,420Nm. However, it’s heavier than the Model S, at 2,464kg, and it’s also £10,000 more expensive, at around £126,000.
Then we have the Model 3 Performance & Model Y Performance. Just like the S & X, they’re built on the same platform, so they both arrive with two electric motors to deliver 527hp and 660Nm. However, while the Model 3 weighs 1,844kg, the Model Y comes in at 1,997kg. The price is pretty similar, mind, at around £58,000 and £60,000 respectively.
So will it be a clean sweep for the Model S? And will the Model 3 beat the Model Y? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Which Tesla won?
I once had a go in a (non performance) Model Y. It was savagely fast, like nothing I’ve ever driven. The fact that even the faster performance version of the Y is so comprehensively outclassed by the 3 and Plaids is completely nuts; I can’t imagine what those things must feel like to accelerate.

That's 1020 horsepower for you.
I love the acceleration in my model 3 performance. The thought of something pulling away from me that quickly is mind boggling.

@@NotPoodleI’ve owned them all (well, I only Turk’s the XPlaid before deciding to get the S Plaid). I so thought my ‘20 Model 3 Performance was closer to my current plaid off the line. It absolutely feels as quick, but my Plaid is 100% ridiculous. I’m actually thinking of going back to the 3 after this one, as I want to get a 3P and maybe a Miata or Mustang for the track.
My ‘22 MYP felt considerably slower than the 3 and was nowhere near as fun to drive.
Actually, my plaid isn’t as fun to drive either, although it’s better now that I have the wheel instead of the yoke.
@@Nice_Person7379It’s my dream to catch a tuned Trackhawk on an interstate on ramp. Nothing, absolutely nothing, comes close to my Plaid.

My Model 3 feels so breathtakingly fast, but seeing the Plaid just rocket off like the 3 is at a standstill is surreal! I hope I can get a Plaid one day, or at least test drive one!
Great comparison!
I have both. As impressive as the S Plaid is it simply does not drive as good as the 3P. I find myself taking the 3 out over the S on most days
@chuchum3 Really? I've had my 3 for 4.5 years. The Plaid is about 20-30k too expensive for me to consider. I am currently waiting to see what Project Highland will bring. If it looks good, I will buy another 3
@@chuchum3 That's awesome that you have both to compare. What do you feel the Plaid lacks as far as "driving good/feel" compared to the 3?
@@gabrielmorales9752 Much less eager to turn and never feels playful. The chassis shows its age compared to the more modern Model 3. Mass is mass and finally I absolutely cannot stand the Yoke! lol
@@chuchum3 Inertia is a very real thing! Thanks for sharing. I know that when the time comes for me to consider electric, overall mass will be a major consideration, they'll get better. Owning a 3 Performance, which is unbelievably fast already. Crazy what the Plaids do…
Wait nobody gonna talk about sexy drag race?
Yeah I have a 3P and I love it but this makes me feel slow, wish I didn't watch it now, lol. I test drove the S Plaid and it was faster but didn't feel THAT much faster. I wish I could have afforded the S Plaid... maybe in a few years.

Agreed only have an LR model 3 4wd with boost package and i feel that car is faaaast and it is more like the y in that race
The 3P is only fast up to about 50mph or so and then the power seriously tails off when compared to ICE cars. You'll be beaten quite easily by most decent Audis, BMWs and Mercs at those speeds and above. This power drop doesn't happen on the S and X Plaids - they continue with brutal power all the way up into the top speeds. The S is still much quicker to 50 than the 3P but it really is above 50 where it massively pulls away and leaves it behind.
I raced a guy with my 2018 SL63 and i won against a model 3 perf........ but he was keeping up extremely well to about 60 mph, actually ahead of me for a car length... then it was game over, but pretty sad really when you consider what I paid for my car lol.. I remember watching a s3XY drag race with the old Model S & X P100D. Although the model S & X were quicker, it was still pretty close. In this race, the model S & X plaid left the model 3 & Y in the dust like they were standing still.
plaid power train is just insane
@@Zarphag It's absolutely unmatched by an other production car! The fact that they are using the same plaid powertrain in the Tesla semi truck is awesome!
Imagine if they put the tri motors in the 3…
@@wsu8568the plaid motors are based on the model 3 rear motor, so they could very easily make a higher power 3 just by doing a carbon wrapped rear motor. With a little change they could do a 2 motor model 3 plaid (basically the Long range S drivetrain). And possibly even the 3 motor drivetrain, although then it would actually be even faster than the model S! So they don’t want to do that at the moment! They can use the 3 platform, the plaid motors, and the roadster body and charge 3 times more for it!
@@ludicrousmodel3173 rimac nevera
8/8 perfect launches. Also, they stopped better because the first launch cleaned the brakes, when you drive it you basically never use the brakes and they get quite dirty after a while. That is why it is important to always brake a bit before a spirited drive.
Wow, that makes total sense. I have to use the brakes only when a light turns red suddenly or some other unexpected thing, and the first use of the day is noticeably bad.

You can see in 00:49 and 00:55 that the M3P has grooves on the brake discs. This is a known error that mine unfortunately also has. You need sport brake pads (not the original Tesla ones) to get this thing braking properly and to last (much) longer.

Pretty much the outcome we all expected but still fun to watch. Over 1000 horsepower is insane in a road car.

@@chrishart8548I'm talking about Plaid S beating the SF90 (which has a much better power to weight ratio) right to Ferraris top speed and keeps going for more, top speed of the Model S when unlocked is somewhere in the 235mph region (Lucid achieved that with much slower air), that's because of insane engineering on the Plaid motors which basically deliver 1000hp flat to 200mph (nothing can match that even with more gears), all of the Ice sedans which were dyno tested on Carwow would look like a joke in linearity throughout the speed range

Not really man. The S Plaid does the quarter in 9.3. In this race it did 9.8 but that could be for many reasons. The 911 turbo can not do 9.3 in the quarter so in this race it would have most likely been in the 10.4ish range.
Turbo S would probably be about 3 car lengths behind
@@ronin7645 Runways are made to be slippery, so it's probably limiting traction.
Should be noted that the S tested has the optional 21 inch wheels, with 295 width in the back, while the X with the basic 20 inch and 275 in the back (there is a 22 inch and 285 option) , thats part of the reason the X has trouble putting down the power in the 1/4 but was closer later

As an owner of both, you still have a great car that’s better in some ways. I just hated when the Mustangs caught me mid-trip at 50% and pulled on me in 70-130 runs on the interstate. Even at 13% charged they cannot keep up with the Plaid.
But THAT is not worth $60k. The air suspension, cooled seats, and hatchback is though. But your 3 is so much more fun to drive. And it’s the only one you can see out the back of.
And let's not even get into talking about the X...

Drove all across Europe without any issues in a Model X last year, super comfortable ride.
CarWow always tests their Model 3 and Y cars in Track Mode which slows them down almost half a second in the quarter mile. Track Mode cools the battery on short runs like this. That slows the car down massively. Track Mode is meant for sustained acceleration and deceleration on road courses. The Model 3 Performance would run 11.4s if they just simply left it in sport mode and preconditioned the battery for Supercharging.
