We homeschooled all 3 of our children They are all grown thriving adults. One of my favorite memories was the afternoon I had taken my daughter and her best friend to the mall. The sales clerk asked, "Is school out today?"
My daughter happily replied, no I'm homeschooled. Clerk got snippy and asked, "How is shopping school?" Without dropping a beat, she responded, "Economics and finance."
I wish I got to see the clerks face after that amazing and witty response :D

I’m homeschooling my child and he is more socialized than most children that go to school. He can carry a conversation with any child or adult, no matter what age.

Yep! I always explain it like this: my kids are exactly what kids should be at their age....before peer pressure and oversexualization of these kids has taken hold. They are free to be age appropriate kids. AND I like to explain that our children are only small for such a short period of time, the rest of their lives they are adults and will know how to socialize with every age level and peer, just the same.

My church just started a program for homeschool kids to go on field trips and do activities together for homeschool. I’m so grateful. Not all socializing is quality socializing. That’s what I tell people that ask that.
Well there is an app called peanut to meet other parents in your area or ask questions get advice arrange play dates you've to verify you are who you say you are (only saying this as could be other homeschool parents in your area. There's also FB groups to talk to homeschool could maybe arrange a few (obviously you'd need to do FaceTime etc to confirm identity) but might be able to arrange a meet up with some at a museum (make sure public spaces of course) but maybe an option just some ideas I thought about when I was thinking of homeschooling.
What a blast from the past.
I homeschooled my four kids (now ages 24-35), and it sounds like the questions and concerns haven't changed one little bit.
We used to say that socialization is "to place under government control," and avoiding that sort of socialization is another great reason to homeschool.
FWIW, my kids did great when they finally entered college classrooms about age 16. They formed good relationships with other students and with their professors, took advantage of many of the resources available to them, and continued to learn enthusiastically. They're now a mathematician, a geneticist, a physicist, and a theatre tech. Not only that, but they are good, kind people!
I was homeschooled my whole life. Now I’m a nurse on a medical surgical unit. It cracks me up when my coworkers ask me about my socialization. I look at them and ask well what do you think. You’ve worked with me for years and didn’t know I was homeschooled did you notice a difference. Most of them realize then that there is nothing different between us. I think most don’t realize that homeschooling doesn’t mean we never leave our house.
Love this! I don’t homeschool, my toddlers go to a Jewish Montessori school but it’s something I think about. I agree, sheltering your children from some of the things at public schools is the best thing you can do for them. We don’t need them exposed to the indoctrination that is very much taking place.
I'm a second generation homeschooling mom of 3 graduated, 3 young kids at home - with 14 years to go! Anything worthwhile will be hard at times, yet so rewarding! The eternal beings we cherish and nurture are what matters, not the discouraging people!Keep it up Mamas!!😁♥️

The number of times I have had to explain that: my son was weird when he was in a montessori preschool, he was weird when he was in public school and he is weird now that he is homeschooled. The main difference? He is happy and curious and energized and trying a ton of things that he would never have time for if he was in a classroom 5 days a week/7 hours a day
I love that you didn’t just say “they won’t be weird!” You said, “there’s weirdos in public school too!”😂😂😂 because the thing is it’s true and a much more compelling and honest argument
Homeschooling worked for our family. I have graduated three kiddos. My oldest is working on his master's degree in forensic science. My middle child got her Bachelor's degree and is now teaching middle school English at a Christian school. And, my youngest started college a year early and is now a college sophomore. :)

When people question my "qualifications" I remind them that I am a product of public school. So if they don't think I can teach my child what I have learned, then there must be a problem with the public school system. That always shuts them right up.

Let the snarkiness fly Angela! 😄 I just had to address the socialization question last night with a lady who assumed homeschooled kids don't have friends to invite to their birthday parties. 🙄 Homeschooling has come a loooooong way. There is so MUCH opportunity and resources out there now....and so many more homeschoolers.
It’s so weird that people always say that as if public schooled kids all have friends… I was public schooled and suffered with loneliness and had no friends in elementary (quiet weird kid I guess..). All my friends were cousins and neighbors

What is a good resource to understand how to create transcripts?
I’m in Australia and work in long day care. I’m forever hearing parents say they’re enrolling their two year olds “for socialisation”. I would love to say “they’re not dogs they don’t need forced socialisation, take them to the super market, library, park” but I don’t think my employer would be too pleased.
So interesting, I am considering keeping my 2 year old home for one more year until he turns 3. So far people are surprised to hear that but at the same time really impressed with his language and vocabulary for his age, he is super friendly and polite in public and loves meeting new people (no matter their age) 🙂So this is great to hear.
@@shoshanaeri8035 I took my daughter to story time at the library and playgroups. She started preschool at 3 years and 10 months from 9.30 until 3, two days a week. I work in long day care where people can leave their babies from as young as 6 weeks old anytime from 6.30am- 6.30pm 5 days a week 😢. Our government subsidies a lot of the fees as well. I understand if you have no other option and need to work but a lot don’t work those long hours but still leave their kids there for long hours, it’s heartbreaking. I’m in Australia.
Thank you!!! I pulled my 3 kids from public school in January of this year to homeschool them. I also had those crazy misconceptions of homeschool prior to doing research before pulling them. I also work from home full time 40+ hours a week. My family thought I was crazy and had the same misconceptions but after educating them and then seeing how it is going, they support me 110%. Homeschool can be a beautiful thing and I wish more people knew the TRUTH about it rather than all the misconceptions

@jessicaladd85 hi! I work 5am-130 pm so I do have that advantage to be able to homeschool them after work. However a typical 9-5 workbooks can be done after dinner (the easier things that need minimal help like spelling, language arts, and maybe a science workbook - I use shell 180 days of science) the weekends or your days off you can do the stuff that takes more time that you can do as a group with all your kids like history and math. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help and will respond 😊
@jessicaladd85 also I homeschool my kids anywhere from 1-3 hours 4-5 days a week which is plenty of time for them to get several things done. Give yourself grace. You don't need to do every subject every day. And sometimes school just doesn't happen for the day bcuz of appointments, errands, or just needing a break and that's okay. I homeschool year round meaning we don't follow public school breaks. We basically school all year which allows us to take days off when needed. Or a week during the time when everyone else is still in school which is great for vacations! I learned a lot from watching Rooted HomeLife on youtube as well as Life With Gina B, and Angela Braniff

Yay! Congratulations on making a great decision to raise your own child! Starting off is difficult, so try to find at least one homeschooling family in your area that has the same values as you and your family. Community in homeschooling helps the transition go more smoothly. It was hard for us to do because we started during the Covid lockdowns, but we are building a community now, and it’s great!
Me as well. Between what I've seen happening in my local school district and what Angela shares, I'm definitely planning on homeschooling my future kids.
Awesome decision!! From a mom who homeschooled both of my sons all the way through, it is one of the best decisions we ever made for our family! I appreciate this video so much. You made so many good points. I am embarrassed to admit that I have previously made comments about "socialization" and "I could never homeschool". It is amazing to me how much my opinion and my openness to considering alternative education methods has changed since becoming a parent. Never say never. Haha
Excellent video! Forty years ago I attended a home school seminar held by Raymond and Dorothy Moore, early advocates of homeschooling, and was very excited to start homeschooling my oldest child who was about to start kindergarten. Unfortunately, my husband didn't agree to it, mainly because I wasn't a "teacher". I have always regretted not being able to do it.
My thoughts exactly. My daughter was in public school from Kindergarten through 3rd grade and I had hardest time keeping up with all the activities and special dress up days that’s not including the 6+ hours she was at school then homework! I hardly saw my kid (I was working) and she was exhausted. The amount of homework she had to do from Kindergarten and every other grade was ridiculous. When did she have time to play and just be a kid? It didn’t work for us. It was a blessing to be able to become a stay at home and homeschooling my daughter. The budget is tight but we are able to make it work. And my daughter is enjoying homeschool and the additional activities she’s part of. She has more friends now then she did when she attended public school. I know everyone’s experience is different I’m blessed that ours has been a positive one. It’s tough but with a little time management and self discipline it’s doable.😊
Absolutely, well said. I found my daughter struggling to keep up in life during the early elementary years in public school. Not struggling due to inability but socially. They are constantly tested or pre-tested. They were not allowed to socialized during class due to being disruptive. They were told to walk single file with arms behind their backs and mouths closed while walking the halls to and from classes. They were told to quickly eat and not to chit chat at the lunch tables. The only time they had playtime was at recess, 30 minutes. Then sent home with tons of homeschool and projects. The school was constantly fundraising or pushing products on us (school shirts, pictures for everything, book fairs, class parties, they needed more and more supplies). I felt like it was a revolving door of payments. My kids came home, did their homework, ate dinner and showered for bed. That is no life. My kids have life again and so many experiences and friendships. We are now truly blessed. No thank you public school.
I am a former (😔 I already miss it and miss my boys with me all the time) homeschool mom. I schooled my boys from k to highschool graduation this past April you are 100% right on every aspect of this video. I kept a quote in sight that says "God doesn't call the one with the ability, He gives the ability to the 1 He calls"

My first time doing homeschooling, it was not exclusively, so no one knew about it, but the teachers. My older children wanted me to teach them exclusively, but I was very young and was not sure I could do it full-time, and work. When I started teaching my son exclusively no one knew until he was at a particular age and they wanted to know what school he was attending. They would ask him, then come to me to find out why I'm hurting my son by stopping him from socializing with other children. This came from family members and people from my former church. I could not give them our daily schedule, nor did I want to. My son used to spend time with other homeschool groups, his older siblings, and children from the nearby public school. He was also included with children at other events we attended far from home. Yet I was made to feel as if I was stupid and doing harm to my son. I got a lot of bad looks. When my sister who is younger came to me for info on the curriculum I was using and started homeschooling her child, they praised her for her efforts as a single mom. I too was single and also working in the medical field full time. I figured they just didn't like me(that was the case for some). Years later, some said how much they were proud of me and how my son had grown so much academically, etc, and that they didn't understand what homeschooling was all about.
My son is now an adult with his own family and he thanked me for homeschooling him at an early age. Later I did put him in public school, and kept a close eye on things, plus stayed involved in PTA and other activities. I didn't just wake up one day and decided to keep him home, I started reading to him while he was in my womb and continued day and night after he was born. He started making sentences early so I continued. We were both enjoying it and the activities, so I went with the flow of it. He would master everything I put before him at a fast pace, so I kept it going( as was advised by the NYS Board of ED liaison). It also helped me to keep current with the education system and reminded me of some things I learned that I thought I forgot, and I learned things along with my son. I'm now homeschooling little ones again and we love it. They play with children at the park and others on weekends, but best of all, they have each other and they are in a healthy environment, not having to sit still for a long period, it's all very flexible.
The people in our surroundings are more understanding and supportive of homeschooling.

“Schools are a lot like prisons” about had me spitting my coffee out. 😂 True story: Our public high school building was built as a copy of a local county prison, complete with guard towers. All the kids know it, too. I feel like that’s just setting the bar pretty darn low, don’t you? Get them used to where they’ll spend the rest of their adulthood? Yeah, no thanks.
This is such a wonderful video! I was homeschooled all the way through and I have never regretted not knowing what other kids (in public school) knew. I have much better social skills than many of my peers and critical thinking is a primary take away from home education. That set me apart in college.
I think the trend is going in our favor with more people doing it now, but the stigma around it will never scare me away from pursuing it for my own kids! It was the greatest experience!
This is fire! A lot of the kids in my homeschool co-op growing up were kids of public school administrators. That fact speaks for itself.
Thank you for this 🫶🏼 You inspired me to take the plunge to homeschool my daughter a year and a half ago, and your Masterclass course really helped me to take the first big steps- very grateful! 🥰 One thing that we are struggling with is making homeschooling friends… I wonder if this is more a cultural issue as we’re in the UK, and although homeschooling is definitely on the rise, there aren’t that many homeschooling families in our close proximity…. My daughter is 11 and very shy, and so far has struggled to find girls of a similar age to her that she’s found a connection with. Her old school friends hardly bother with her now, and she does find this aspect of homeschooling hard. Not hard enough to make her want to go back to school, though!! 😅 That said, I think that I possibly take for granted the amount of “socialisation” that she does get! It’s hard when you don’t have anything to compare against, but she goes to a kids club at church on Sunday, and during the week, she goes to youth Bible group, Guides, helps at a parent + toddler group, and goes to youth club! So maybe, that’s not that bad over all?!! 🤷🏼♀️😂 apologies for the long post, just curious if anyone one else wonders the same?!! 😊
I remember the first day I took my 2 homeschooled daughters along with a friend's 2 homeschooled daughters ages 5-7 to dance class. The teacher told them to line up. They looked puzzled and started whispering to each other. At first the teacher thought they were being disobedient. I had to chuckle and remind her that they're homeschooled and have no idea what "line up" means. So that became lesson #1. Lol
I have a five and a three year old... and they talk to anyone and everyone. They can carry on any conversation that comes up. My opinion is that Mama knows how to teach socialization and communication the best to her children... because she can be hands-on 24/7! Teaching them how to talk to their siblings, neighbors, local grocery store employees, etc, is so needed! If good clear consistent communication is not in the home, then they will not be able to do it outside of the home with confidence, whether they attend public school or not.
Right on my Sister! That part, at the 11:36 mark, the bullying and when I realized there was no difference in the culture of my child's former public school experience and the structure of the prison system. My child was a Kindergartner and they refused to give her lunch when they demanded she recite her number from memory or she wouldn't eat, she was 5 years old! You know who else is forced to memorize their number? Prisoners! Mic drop! I heard the librarian at that school yelling at students one day to get in line single file and shut their mouth before entering. I couldn't believe it. Thank you for this, this made my whole year! My mother just shared with me, that an associate expressed her disdain that my child is homeschooled and my Mom didn't know what to say, her feelings were just hurt at the assumptions made about her grandchild. This year will be my first time homeschooling. I totally agree with you on having to keep track of the special school days, dress up days, and activity days...etc. It was exhausting and stressful. K-12 homeschooled kid here! I was jarringly socially awkward even into my college years and I had many, many friends that struggled even more than me. It's a stereotype for a reason unfortunately. Not everyone in the 90s and 00s did their best to prioritize socialization and I felt the effects of this. But you're right - it is 2023! And we have sooo many more options and so many families that homeschool for various reasons. I'm excited to see HS kids graduate in the future and have an easier adjustment than I did. :)
There’s jarringly socially awkward kids in public school as well, as a homeschool kid who begged my parents to go to public school and got my wish, I witnessed it first hand… and begged my parents to let me come home again as well!

First, THANK YOU! I have found SO many benefits of homeschooling, especially working at MY childs speed. "Blanket kearning" is harming so many children. To expect 30 kids to learn at the same time, same speed, same comprehension is unrealistic and it causes children to be left behind !! Then teachers act like something is wrong with our children. You can't expect 5 to learn equally in a selected time frame, successfully, much less 30!! Which is why homework is absolutely engulfing and robbing children and families. I can spend extra time on something my kiddos are struggling with, or move faster in a area they excel in. We can dig deeper into those things. Also, the 'breaks' If I see my child is struggling or overwhelmed is priceless! I can slow down or even take a break if we need to and let them catch their breath, come back and usually they nail it. Where public school is too bad, move on! I was once told by a family member, by homeschooling you are taking the easy, lazy way out as a Mother. WHAT??? Easy is getting my kiddos up, fed, dressed and in someone else's care for 7 or 8 hours while i kick back prop my feet up and drink my iced coffee. That is laziness. Trusting my childs education, safety and so much of development into the hands of basic strangers is not fair to my child.

I so thank you for this video. You made such great points about socialization and how unreal high school interactions and dynamics were. I could have done without it.
I now have a toddler and we are looking into homeschooling him. It would be in a foreign language but everyday I get more excited about the fun challenge that will be for us to do it in a new language and country and how much we will be able to learn and bond through the homeschooling journey. Positive socialization is friends and family members, extracurricular activities etc.
Negative socialization happens for like 70 mins a day at school and the rest of it they're learning safety drills from fire to shooting and everything in between.
One thing I loved about homeschool kids is that you could hold a conversation with ten regardless of age and they were generally well mannered and not "too busy" for others.
Easy back when school houses were a thing it was a single teacher for all the kids on the village and the older kids helped the younger ones. Their peers were of all ages and that's what we are in homeschool kids too! JMO

I, too am a Millennial mom and homemaker. I have been really considering homeschooling for a long time and this video was very much needed.
I’m a grandmother who would have loved to homeschool my children but did not. I lacked the flexibility you speak of. But I disliked the school system and did supplement their learning wherever I could. I did not feel that children in the school system were more socialized. On the contrary, I found them bullying, envious and totally lacking in the emotional intelligence that one who is truly invested in the learning of their children can teach them. There wasn’t a day that my children didn’t bring home stories of the other children who ate the skin between their toes or rubbed their pizza all over their clothes, speared helpless frogs on fence posts or maliciously tried to get each other into trouble.
I resented all the donut and pizza days, the constant fundraising and all things that I felt put the important aspect of learning on the back burner. If I were a mother today, I would definitely home school my kids. Public school is no longer about nurturing and teaching children…it’s about churning out dummied down obedient little consumers. 🤨

I am thinking about homeschooling / switching to homeschooling because my oldest really isn’t getting the kind of education at public school, I would’ve hoped for. On top of that our local public school seems to become more and more of a „social dumpster“ for unloved and unattended kids each year. The things they do / say / attempt to do (setting fire to the school for example and calling other students the worst of names) is outright terrifying. I am just sick of asking my daughter about her day at school and next thing you know we‘re talking about prostitution because one of her classmates called her a **** and she didn’t even know what that meant. It‘s draining the joy and life out of her and subsequently of our family as well.
Anyone got experience with a „late transition“ to homeschooling? My oldest is 11, my youngest 4 years old.

@ScrumpyRoo I've met so many people who I don't want teaching my children and I know there are people like them in the systems but also knowing just how varied ach child is in their understanding and learning styles and how even the best teacher can't reach every student. Also seeing how we are being taught the right ways to teach students and how the laws are now being passed to directly defy it and my peers openly sharing how they simply won't do things that way. Also how schools are ran like a business first and a learning center second just feels wrong to me. And how important parent support and supplementation is in student success in school it just makes sense to personalize to my own children and instead of filling in the gaps making ot so there aren't gaps

I have been homeschooling our kids for 7 years. But, I recently had to take on a full time job. I have a 14 year old daughter who is now an independent learner. My 12 year old son hates schoolwork. I have tried a few different curriculums and even involved him in picking out curriculum. I've tried creative measures and punitive measures. It doesn't work with him. He will do it if I sit there and continue reminding him to do it. But, working 8 to 5 makes that impossible. I also have four year old twins who demand lots of attention. I am a strong advocate for homeschool, but after lots of prayer and mulling over and even trying different schedules for our days, I simply can't make homeschooling work for my boys in this season. So, in the Fall, they will be going to a private school. I am hopeful that they will do well and learn a lot...and, who knows...maybe one year I can bring them back home...i will add that my daughter thrives in homeschool and will continue to be homeschooled. ❤
Oh my GASH. 16:00 yes and amen, keeping up with the school calendar is NUTS, and was way more stressful than homeschooling by far!
“Folly is bound up in the heart of a child.” Why would I want my child spending 8+ hours a day around other foolish school children whose parents and social media accounts teach them goodness-knows-what? “Socialization” as defined by the average person is overrated.
This is what my mom thought, and after being at home through high school, the three of us siblings were unable to function. I am the only one with a stable life now. My mom was afraid of the influence of the world. Be sure to teach them enough about the world so they make good decisions and don’t go into it completely naive and socially inept like we did.
@@JN_194 Keeping kids too sheltered is a problem. Go easy on your mom though. I know several people who did go to public school and are still not able to function in society. They are near 30 and older and still live with their parents. A lot of variables go into an adult’s inability to function in society.
@@JN_194That is why it's very important to have a good honest and open relationship with your children, where they can talk to you about anything! Being sheltered doesnt mean we aren't teaching them how things are outside the home and what's what out there in the world:-) ...but it does control the ages that they learn those things :-)
@@JN_194Your account and personal perspective is the exception, not the rule. Most homeschooled children have social lives. In fact, we tend to oversocialize.

The biggest reason I don’t think I could homeschool my child is that I don’t think I’m disciplined enough to do it. I feel it’s important to be able to have some kind of routine and stick to it but I have never been good at that. I also don’t know if I have the patience either.
I am in awe of homeschooling parents!
I have a friend that did it with no discipline. Her kids had to take remedial classes before college. I think one big key is to know yourself. That too benefits your kids.

I agree that it was tougher for me to deal with all the stuff required when my son was in public school. The amount of time I wasted just sitting in pick up and drop off lines and driving back and forth sitting in traffic etc. Homeschooling is less stressful and a more productive.
Yay for doing it your own way! I'm not planning on homeschooling as I love the school my son attends (live in the UK) aaaaand I love hearing different viewpoints especially when said openly and unjudgmentally with just a touch of sass :) x

Thank you for this video. My 2 year old wouldn't fit in public school because he is at a kindergarten level already without pushing him at all. We just give him regular options of things to learn and most he absorbs some he doesn't. People think I am wrong for letting him do this because we are starting actual curriculum soon.
I was bullied really bad in middle school and begged my mom to homeschool me but she was a single mom and wasn’t able to.

Right now, my son is doing a film history unit. Totally off the cuff, not planned at all.
He's (we're) researching old films from the 1900's about dinosaurs.
It's both fascinating and weird at the same time---(yep, stop animation at it's finest)!!!
He's journaling in his notebook some cool stuff he learns about each of the films and is sooooo into it.
And bonus, it totally beats language arts worksheets/less teaching more learning at the moment. :)

I dealt with that when we homeschooled. I would respond sometimes that I was not particularly impressed with the social influence at the public schools.
I have 5 kids one just graduated from public school. One will be a senior next year. The 3 youngest are 10, 3, and 2. We decided to move our 10 year old to homeschool this year. And homeschool the last 2. Realizing I'm not going to have to worry about bingo nights and fundraisers and disappointing my kids when I forget about spirit week is a huge relief! Lol
👍 Kids get in trouble for 'socializing' at school. Homeschoolers socialize at church, in family and community events and other public spaces.
