- What is a hospital ER Tech? ER Tech stands for Emergency Room Technician. An ER tech is pretty much an EMT working in the hospital ER department instead of an ambulance in the field. The ER Techs work and assist the RNs and other medical staff inside the hospital emergency room. ER techs provide emergency basic patient care to patients who are admitted to the ER.
Some common ER tech duties and responsibilities include:
- Taking basic vitals like blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature of patients
- basic BLS patient care like cleaning and bandaging injuries
- Assist w/ collecting various patient specimens like stool, urine, and blood for lab testing
- Assist nurses or doctors with medical procedures in the emergency room
Demand for ER techs is developing at a much-faster-than-average rate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts 24-percent growth for the position through 2024, amounting to a total of 58,500 job openings for ER Techs during that period.

Thank you for making the video!! Very helpful and informative.
What's your thought on ER Tech? Just FYI, some smaller hospitals will not require EMT certification/license, but know that you will be competing against EMTs/Medics when you apply for ER Tech job.
Hi John, other than applying on jobsites, would you advise on speaking to HR in person?
not really... unless you already have lots of experience and know someone in the company as a referral. They would still ask you to apply online or their company website career page.
Is it common for ER Techs to be hires as part time or do they need to be full time? I have another job that pays pretty well amd I'd like to keep it to
My had co-worker who work part-time on the weekend (2 days) while he has another job during the day. It’s depending on the company. I know some LA companies rather hire part time first, then see how they do before transition them to full time. It really depends on ur area.
Can you apply for a job with an emt certificate for the job role of medical assistant ?
it depends if the place actually wants a medical assistant with medical assistant cert. Usually, medicla assistant has longer school/training due to ability to draw blood. You have to look at the job details. If it's just blood pressure and regular task for doctor office, then it should be more flexible.
I have a question.....Can I be a ER Tech and easily transition into Register Nurse??
Yes. However, usually you need experience of ER/EMT to be an ER tech. Then, you need to get into an RN program while working. It can be challenging, but many people had done it. I have co-worker who worked as patient transport while getting his RN license. Eventually, he finished his program, and he worked at the same hospital but as an RN now.
