1st CLASS HIGH SPEED TRAIN in Poland | PKP EIP Warsaw - Krakow

- I have tried PKP EIP, which is a high-speed train in Poland. We traveled in first class round trip from Warsaw to Krakow. EIP stands for Express InterCity Premium. Here, you can travel smoothly and non-stop between Poland's major cities, and first class includes both light meals and hot beverages such as coffee or tea. Everything is served at the seat.
PKP is Poland's national train operator and operates the route with multiple departures per day. Expect prices ranging from just a few EUR to 50-70 EUR for a first-class ticket.
The trains used are ED250 Pendolino, which have a maximum speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) but typically operate at 200 km/h (125 mph). They were put into service in 2014. There are 402 seats on the train, 45 in first class and 357 in second class. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

Poland is very backward, we only have two sexes and all babies are born to women with a vagina
Helo I recommend visiting Warsaw, Gdansk and Wroclaw . Krakow is just too crowded (while there do not miss the Wieliczka salt mine) regards J.
Poland is getting better and better each day.

I took that train also, but from Warsaw Centraila. I found it an excellent experience. We were in 1st class also, the meal service was a pleasant surprise.
Nice to hear that you had a similar experience! 😎
I completed this trip from Gdansk to Krakow in second class and I was very pleased with the experience. It was much better than flying service wise, view wise, and experience (time was comparable). Multiple times we were offered drinks but had no food service, but instead I chose to visit the WARS food cabin and got a meal for 25zl.
Sounds like a good experience! Glad to hear!
Hi. I travel on business on these trains every month. Cleanliness, level of service are always at a high level. Travel time is also a plus.
Nice to hear! Sounds like my experience wasn’t a one hit wonder. 🥳
Great video! Lovely Poland
🇵🇱🥳
In this "bistro" in Polish trains (all that have one, not only in EIP) you can get a full meal prepared on site. Breakfast, soup, spaghetti, salad, burger, sandwich, alcohol, deserts, etc. In EIP they are served on real plates with real cutlery and in read glasses. In other categories of train it usually paper plates, plastic cutlery and paper cups. The menu is largely the same though. You can always check if your train will have this "bistro" WARS car. WARS is a company that provides these services in Polish trains. Everything but alcohol can be delivered to your seat and consumed there. You can even use an app to order your food and drink without leaving your seat. Alcohol (including beer) needs to be consumed in the WARS car.
Great information! I never tried WARS or the app. Next time! 🥳

Very nice. I love traveling in Poland.
Me too. After this trip. 🎉
The train starts at Warszawa Gdańska station because of some construction works at Warszawa Zachodnia. Warszawa Gdańska station is rarely used for long distance trains.
Thanks for your comment!
Actually, it doesn't seem like that's the case - almost all platforms are done on Warszawa Zachodnia station, but there are still long distance trains passing through Gdańska station. I guess it's for unloading traffic, since Warszawa Gdańska is quite well connected with ths city's public transportation.
Great trip report! I will be doing this route later this summer and perhaps I will splurge on the first class as well :) I am happy you have enjoyed it!

For travelers from the world if you want to use trains in Poland to move between major cities. Choose trains marked as EIC (Express InterCity), then you can be sure of a high standard of travel with the arrangement of seats like in an airplane. This EIP is just a little bit faster and that`s it.

last year we took an EIP from Warsaw to Gdansk, it was good but underwhelming, because it was so smooth and quiet! we will be in Poland again this year and plan on taking an EIP whenever we can. we will be visiting Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin and Torun.
Ah, nice to hear! 🥳
Operations on that route should finally start at 250 km/h in a couple of years. It has been limited due to signalling and a lack of protection against animal intrusions. This line is not fenced as are most high-speed lines.
Hopefully that’s the future!
Great travel guide. Personally, I appreciate speed and silence, but I feel uncomfortable when the train is full of passengers. A bit like in an economy class plane (2nd class).

Pendolino is nice but vey expensive... you can travel the same route in the 'regular' express EP train for 1/3 of the price ... and will take only 20-30 extra travel time, roughly 3hrs to get from Warsaw to Cracow.
That might be the case. Haven’t tried the other train so I can’t really tell.
Calling It „high speed” is a little overstatement, but it’s the fastest we got 😅

I'm just very surprised it was so empty. When I travel polish trains, they are fully booked... did you buy all the seats for that video? :D :D :D
Maybe… 😏
1st class is not comonlly used in Poland
Because of?
probably because of the price difference between the classes. Yesterday I was traveling Pendolino 2nd class from Tczew (near Gdańsk) to Krakow and the train was full almost the entire journey. The price difference in 1st and 2nd class is huge for Polish passengers (family ticket for me and my child cost around 300 PLN in 2nd class, in 1st class increases to 450 PLN)
@@superaranta7722 +50%! 😮

Well. Last minute.
5:04 I find it cute how in the modern times certain aspects of life that used to be taken for granted and considered standard, like train compartments, have become a _luxury_ for special people (e.g. for families with children). In the old days the open-seating cars were only used on low-grade local trains, and considered too "uncouth" and too uncomfortable for long distance trains. But now open seating is considered some sort of "norm" and "class", despite its obvious probems, e.g. (1) the inability to escape a loud person in the car, (2) the lack of access to the window if your seat is not a window seat, (3) if you want to stand and stretch your legs, the only place to do it is at the car's end, typically next to the toilet (the spot also gets crowded), otherwise you'll end up breathing on someone's neck and blocking the way. OK, that's enough ranting for now 🙂
😂
Well I prefer smaller cabins.
How long was the trip ? How much was ticket ? Where did you buy tickets /internet ? Thank you ! Liked the video !

High class trains in Poland are very expensive and price is different in different days and hours, which is pretty annoying. To buy something online can be pain, I visited Poland for several time and when it was possible, I was using our Czech apps (sometimes you can buy even trains in other countries there when it's train going from or to your country).
Poles have many things better, but these things like buying tickets are really complicated, many apps want complicated registrations or they don't have actual app and you have to do it in internet browser, which is not comfortable to do from a phone and their public transportation apps in cities sometimes don't work without polish phone number. This is always really pain for me when I am out of my country where we are so used to all these things like SMS tickets or ticket machines which actually work and are simple to use, like you press one button with ticket you wish and tap with your card and you have ticket here for public transportation in few seconds, in Poland, it takes like 3 minutes to buy a ticket for public transportation in big cities, it's so complicated and slow and forget about buying train tickets from machines, it's possible, but it's that complicated that you will not be able to find out how to buy that without help, they don't have anything like our flexi tickets which are not connected to specific trains, here in Czechia, I go to app, buy ticket from place A to place B and go to the train, if it's not some high class train with mandatory seat reservation ofcourse. In Poland, it's so complicated and in many other countries too. Ofcourse our app can fail too, sometimes some update can break it, but you can still go to ticket office and just say "ticket from city A to city B" and you have mostly your ticket in like 3 seconds and there are even coins back already on your ticket when they give it to you, it's THAT fast! In other countries, they wait in lines and to buy train ticket can take even few minutes. Like when I was for the first time in Poland, our train was leaving in 20 minutes, I thought we have a lot of time, but I was wrong, we barely did it on time, it was like we jumped to the train and it was immediately leaving, that is how long it takes to wait in their lines and buy tickets, they probably don't realize how slow it is when they don't know different system with flexible tickets and no mantatory train or seats. It was faster even in Portugal, which is country where waiting in lines is literally their national sport. 😀
If you buy a ticket a month earlier, it is much cheaper. In second class you will get a bottle of water for free.
Yes, this time we couldn’t book that far in advance.
Hi! It's no sense to overpay for the 1st class in EIP. It's better to use 2nd class and WARS bistro with really good food. I recommend eggs for the breakfast "jajecznica" and żurek and schabowy for lunch or dinner. It's strange it was so empty?!
We managed to get reasonably good prices and wanted to test how good first class in Poland can actually be. We were satisfied with it. Thanks for the tip about the bistro, we'll try it next time. 🙂
The speed between Krakow and Warsaw should be much higher. The optimal time should be around 2 hours max. 3 h is way tooo much.

Hi! I am trying to buy Pendolino tickets online (I am US based) but I am having a very difficult time as every time I go to a new page, the language is back to Polish. Any tips? Thanks in advance!
Same for me. Had to change it every time. Yes, their website kind of sucks. 🤷♂️😎
Use translator
Well, there are corners of this universe where languages other than English are spoken. Foreign tourists visiting the United States do not necessarily expect to be waited on in their mother tongues.
@@jansupronowicz1300 Did I say that? However everywhere else in the dozens of countries I've traveled to (more than the average American), their websites are translated to English very easy with no hiccups.
In the US, railway workers do not know what Poland is and that there is a Polish language. In Poland, the official language is Polish... luckily.
The Pendolino is a comfortable train, but 1st class is still too expensive for the quality in my opinion. So is the EIC. I choose 1st class if there is a price promotion. There is not much difference between 1st and 2nd class. In Pendolino, it is worth choosing the "quiet zone". It's quieter there.
I can agree but for this certain event we wanted to try 1 class both ways. But yes, I also prefer quiet zone if possible.
Do you or anyone else know how to go from Lublin to Krakow? I can not find any information online. I am a tourist and I need to go from Lublin to Krakow airport soon.
Hi, sorry but I don’t know and can’t help you in this case.
If you google rozklad pkp you'll find the train timetable. I can see there are 3 direct trains from Lublin to Krakow each day, taking 4-5 hours. Then you either take a train from Krakow main station to Krakow airport, they take less than 20 minutes and go every 30 minutes.

I think that the flight from Cracow to Warsaw is cheaper ten this train.
But probably less effective.
It's 200 km/h. When modern 320 km/h in Poland ?
I have not claimed 320 km/h. However, the trains are capable of higher speeds than the 200 km/h they run at on the current route.
@@FlyingDryden this train is capable of traveling at 250 km/h. It will not reach this speed with passengers at 3kV DC power though. Sadly the infrastructure in Poland will not allow faster travel. The record speed in Poland was set at 293 km/h with this exact train type, but only in testing phase.
There are multiple plans for high speed railway lines, and the Central Rail Line (here we call it the CMK) is currently getting upgraded for speeds of up to 250 km/h.
To be honest, 320 km/h may be too much for our country, as Germany is no longer investing in high speed lines with speed limit higher than 250 km/h. That can be expensive to maintain too.
@@JaNieWie I hope that Poland builds lines similar to Spain, with max speeds 350 km/h, all would run on a regular gauge, which should make it significantly cheaper.
Polish trains will not reach speeds of 250 km/h with the current power infrastructure. There was a plan of building new high-speed lines equipped with with 25 kV AC power. Not sure if the current government shelves this idea though.
@@andrzejostrowski5579 from what I know, these ideas are not put away, at least that's what I've heard. The 350 km/h limits sound great, but I don't know from who can we get the rolling stock reaching this speed, at least as of now.
Also, expect civil unrest when constructions for high speed lines finally begin. People here in Poland can't accept changing for the better.

We wanted to try the EIP. 🥳
It’s depends on the h 🕰️
Yepp!
maybe because it is kind of expensive...
When I travel on this route I prefer to choose other trains, with traditional compartment cars, over EIP. The compartment cars give much more space, while EIP cars are just too tight for me, I feel like being tied and constricted in these cars, especially when they are full, which happens very often. I wonder that your train was so empty and there were almost no passengers...
I think it’s because we traveled from Warsaw Gdańska and not the central station.
How long do the other trains take?
@@FlyingDryden They used to take about the same time as EIP, that is, around 2:40, because they were also going without any stops. But in recent years PKP purposefully removed these trains from that route and now only 3 per day remained, and they are travelling around 3 and half hours, because they are slower trains with intermediate stops. But they are also cheaper, and PKP wants to force people to take EIP on that route, which is much more expensive (for us Poles basically too expensive, if you aren't lucky to catch one of the few cheaper tickets sold a month in advance - EIP 2nd class bought on the same day is 170 zł, and the slower train is about 70 zł).
It may be also interesting for you that the travel time 2:40 on that route has been achieved already in 80's, right after the line was built (a majority of the route is over a special railway line built in late 70's that is to large extent separated from other railway infrastructure - kind like a highway for trains - so they can go fast there). So the EIP actually hasn't improved anything with regard to travel time, it's just the time the trains on that route are supposed to take...
Aha!
Yes the service is great but as you saw, the train was almost empty as it is totally overpriced...
As I said in other comments - we booked late (the day before one trip and the same day the other trip). But yes, a lower price is preferable.
It is not overpriced. There thing is that there's just too many trains to Krakow (literally one every hour)

Polish high class trains are nice, but these are not real high speed trains and their Pendolino is pretty much Fakedolino, because it can't tilt in turns. 😀 But it's nice that on some routs, you can go straight forward for 200 km with only few stops, so even when train is going only 160 km/h, it's pretty fast.
it can't tilt on turn, because there are no proper railway tracks for that in PL, there is nothing wrong the trains in this case
@@matemm52 we also don't have proper fast train tracks and our pendolino can tilt in turns, I don't think problem is in tracks, I heard that Poles just ordered simplified version of that unit because they have mostly straight tracks and they just don't need tilting in high speed.

200 and 160 is good enough on this route if you ask me. 😎
@pidala321
Hey! Of course these are not a real 'Pendolinos'. The reason of buying non-pendulum 'Pendolinos' could be:
1. Allowed outline of the train on the the track (probably not).
2. No real need for these: Polish high-speed tracks utilize idea of having as little as possible number of curves, and special profile of curves (it means: there is transition curve [I forgot the name] before and after main curve to have slight change of lateral acceleration instead of rather instant change).
At first I was disappointed with the choice of non-pendulums, but finally I like it, because it simplifies train, so: cheaper train, cheaper service and less 'points of failure'. Greets ;p
@@OsservatoreSicilianoYes, it makes sense in Poland because you have long straight tracks, we don't have such advantage here, there is some hill or something everywhere blocking the way and we are really bad in making tunnels, except finnancial tunnels if you know what it means. 😀
Warszawa Gdańska is the worst train station in Warsaw. Looks like straight from Communism times. I hope that it’s going to be rebuilt
Perhaps not surprising, the station was last renovated in 1984.
it was a calm station for people from ciechanow 45.000 and działdowo 30.000, then invasion of villagers from whole poland
Warszawa Gdańska (Warsaw Gdanska) is quite nice station. It has got good location and is connect with metro M1 line station. It was small 'hub' for suburban trains going to north east and north west (e.g. Legionowo, Modlin, Ciechanów, Działdowo).
Now it becomes almost main railway station due to huge (means huuuuuuge) reconstruction of Warsaw West Station and west-east pass and western exit.
It quickly turned out that this station is a bit too small, but there is no need (and possiblity) to expand it further, because it only serves its function temporarily.

Z 10 razy jechałem Eurostarem i TGV. 300 km/h, to norma. Francuzi mają 700 takich pociągów. Podróż z Londynu do Marsylii 7 godzin. Z Londka do Paryża 2godz. 15 minut. Z Paryża na południowe wybrzeże 3,5 godziny. Bilet do Paryża 50 funtów.
Trochę inny był starting point Poland and France.
@@jwojczulis Jak długo jeszcze będziemy się tak tłumaczyć ? Francuzi sami wymyślili te pociągi. Polakom wystarczyłoby zmodernizować linie kolejowe i kupić pociągi. Czesi mają Skodę, Węgry- Wizzaira, Rumunia - Dacie, Chorwacja i Bułgaria- turystykę, a my ? Lewandowskiego ? Korea, już w latach 80- tych stała się potęgą. Po 30 latach od wyniszczającej wojny. Warszawa Gdańska is a station with a dreadful history behind. It is from there Poles packed into the trains and expelled thousands of Polish Jews in 1968. On the wall of the building there is a commemorative plate with an inscription saying "To those who left Poland after March 1968 with a one-way ticket" 'They left more here than they had' - Henryk Grynberg".
