    I bought one of these a month ago and it is one of the most accurate and fun rifle to shoot! Not to mention that the ammunition is readily available and cheap. out of the shooting I've done so far I prefer the 20 grain over the 25 grain bullet. If you get a chance buy this gun with a heavy barrel put a bipod on it you're good to go.

    @Jb Sports - Asked and answered in the comments below: "Most of the ground squirrels in this video were in the 75 to 175 yard range. The ones in the brush were around 100 yards, with the one in the thick brush at 5:36 being only about 70 yards. Part Two will be up in a couple of days and it includes shots on prairie dogs that averaged 225 yards and the far shot of 359 yards!" - Eric

    Thanks Eric. 17 HMR costs £12.50p for 50 up to £14 per fifty depending on make. So it is actually dearer in dollar terms but roughly one pound sterling for every dollar. I have an idea now what it might cost. Thanks for the prompt reply. Cheers!

    Nice video and great commentary. My only issues with the .17 WSM is the consistency of the ammo. In the beginning I seemed to always have 1 or 2 flyers in a 5 shot group. What I'm doing now is weighing each cartridge and shooting the collective average rounds when punching paper or shooting varmints. 5 shot groups are averaging, off the bench at 100 yards, in the .035" to .045" range consistently. I've also had good results with the 25gr rounds on coyotes under 100 yards. Head shots only. Once again, nice review. Good Shooting.

    gotta say your channel is by faaaaarrrrrr my favorite hunting vids to watch, no question! I'm getting ready to pick up a B mag with the SS heavy barrel and syn stock, and will probably replace it with a boyds down the road.. anyways, i've seen your review on the Winchester 15gr ntx with a DETAILED accuracy report with an avg group of .5005, and you've stated your B mag is "on" in the videos where you're using Winchester 20gr and/or 25gr, so what accuracy in *detail* (at 100yds) did the 20's and 25's do out of your heavy barrel B mag??

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 7 lety

      I am going off memory, because I ditched a lot of my old targets that I kept before my move to Idaho, but it was below 0.75" at 100 yards consistently with the 20 grain AE ammo (based off my old notes). I don't use the 25 grain bullets, so I don't have any info on the accuracy for those.

      We are actually changing our entire business model to bring in revenue from sources other than Google ads. However, we only have a small "staff" of folks at this time and are trying to stay that way. In the near future, we will be putting out requests for guest writers (with video) and we are going to try to do a revenue sharing plan, depending on how those individual articles/video perform. Otherwise, it is definitely a job, I just get to shoot a lot. ;-)

      ***** Hullo Eric, I have a question.
      I know that for hunting prairie dogs all day long there are a lot of fantastic rifles and calibers; but personally I am focused on the following ,
      1) new Savage B.MAG "Target" .17 WSM
      2) CZ 455 Varmint .17 HMR
      3) new Ruger AR556 .223 Rem. ( this one because it is very versatile).
      Please, what would you choose among these?
      Thank you very much :)

    What is the point of a heavy barrel when those stupid grooves are machined into the barrel at the action. Those grooves just serve to make the barrel less rigid at that point.

    Hi Eric, austin here again, I got some ammo(25gr) have been able shoot it after free floating the stock and geez can it shoot! Sometimes... I was shooting some groups off a sand bag and the first 3 shots were about 2 inches apart. 2nd group was a little better at 1 inch.(this was all at 100 yards) 3rd group was 5 shots at 1/2 inch! I was flabbergasted but all the groups after that except for one more were 1.5-2.5 inch groups which isn't within my standard. But I'm stumped, what could be the problem? Any suggestions?

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      Hi Austin. Did you pull it from the stock and remount it in the stock? I do this to every new rifle I have that may not shoot as well as I expect. I will play with the torque of the bolts that mount it to the barreled action, until I find the sweet spot. I had to do that to my original thin barreled B.MAG and ended up with very good results. Also, have you tried any of the 20 grain ammo? Savage recently changed the twist rate of their new B.MAG barrels to 1:8". From what I understand, this was done to help stabilize the heavier bullets. I am in Las Vegas for the SHOT Show, so my replies may be delayed! - Eric

      Varminter Magazine Thx for the tips. My HBSS Bmag came with the boyd Thumbhole stock and my groups were ok at best. I phoned savage after watching your video and reading the comments and they said as per there FAQ that any rimfire rifle in any stock should be torqued to 15 ft lbs. Mine was at 60 in. Lbs. I will try it and let you know if it improves. They said to send it to them if this doesn’t help.
      Also wonder if you still like the BSA with 17wsm reticle. Considering that or a used bushnell 2.5-16x50 perhaps.
      Update
      Tried 15in lbs and got a 2-1/8 th group
      Tried 25 in lbs and got 2 inch group
      Tried 35 in. Lbs and got a 1 inch group
      Will try to fine tune it.🤞

    Nice video, I'm thinking of selling my sako quad in 17hmr and 22 mag for a 17wsm or a 17 hornet 🐝, now used to have a CZ in 22 hornet I was told that these 17 wsm have the same energy as the 22 hornet 🐝 with a 35 vmax round at 200 yrds. Plus I am a reloader my next rifle up from this is a 220 swift , lwill be shooting red fox and rabbits , which would you recommend 17 wsm or 17 hornet 🐝 maximum distance on rabbits and fox 300 yards atvb steve all advice very welcome

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 7 lety

      Hi Steve. Because you may have some opportunities to shoot fox passed 200 yards, I would personally choose the 17 Hornet. It is a very accurate round, and the added energy at 200-300 yards will be needed to make a humane kill on the bigger varmints. I have a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet, and it is the most accurate production rifle I own (with factory loads). I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • @calvingrover4002
    @calvingrover4002 Před 9 lety

    Hey Eric, we were lucky enough to hold out till the stainless heavy barrel b mag came out. The gun shoots average, but throws the "fliers" that everyone associates with the garbage factory stock. I also have looked at the boyd's featherweight stock and was wondering if there was fitting required when you put the rifle in that stock. Also how was the accuracy after the stock? It seems like you may have gotten one of the good ones right off bat. Its a shame these rifles are troublesome considering the capabilities of this round as you have demonstrated. We have a 93 in .17 HMR and that is a tac driver so I am hoping to make this rifle shoot similarly. So just if you could give some tips or pointers on that boyd's featherweight stock, I would greatly appreciate it.

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      Hi Calvin. My Boyds did not fit well when I got it, so it took some in-letting of my own with a Dremel. I took a bit out of the magazine well, a small amount underneath the safety and added a shim over the front screw that attaches the stock to the receiver. However, I have heard that the more recent stocks have been a bit better fit. My rifle was more accurate with the plastic stock, but I am not done with adjusting the Boyd's stock yet to make a comparison. Some folks have added a heavy rubber strip in front of the receiver, under the barrel. I will probably end up doing something like that in order to really snug the action into the stock. Otherwise, it is going to be an entire bedding job to get it where I want it. I hope this helps! - Eric

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 8 lety +1

      +Mark Moffitt - Hi Mark. It is the BSA 17 Super Mag scope, in 6-24x44mm. After using it, and reading some of the other reviews out there, I would lean towards the 4.5-14x44. The 6-24 is decent up to about 16 power, but I don't normally go much higher than that. I did run into an issue, when the elevation turret became unresponsive. Either way, it is a $100 scope, so understand the limitations on a scope priced that low.

    • @varmintermagazine

      I actually like both about the same. The BMag is lighter, and the stocks on the Savage give a better cheek weld (I have the thin barrel, and a heavy barrel with a Boyd's thumbhole stock). The Ruger magazine is easier to load, and the rifle feels better due to it being more of a higher end rifle. I hope this helps!

      @@varmintermagazine between the 5 and 9 freeways. Do you know how much area is between the 5 and 99 freeways? 5 and 99 run almost parallel to each other from Sacramento to Bakersfield. Thats about 275 linear miles. The actual area is much bigger. So excuse me, but I must beg the question. Where between 5 and 99?

    The rings you had for the BSA SCOPE they looked medium height? Or was it high?

      I just checked and they are Burris Zee Rings High. - Eric

      ***** will medium height work? I ordered the BSA 6-24 .17wsm scope and the new savage target thumbhole rifle but I got medium Burris zee rings.

      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      brian dusick - I don't know if the medium will work. My scope is really low and almost touches the bolt when ejecting a round. Try it, but you may need to change over to the high. - Eric

    Finally!
    Truly this rifle can be defined Gen.2. This video is very clear: Savage has also modified the bolt action, I hope this should be less stiff than the previous one.
    With the Boyd stock it is a masterpiece of contemporary Fine Arts.
    Now, my only ramaining doubts concern the consistency of .17 WSM ( see the following reviews
    czcams.com/video/QDPrcVAJF5o/video.html
    czcams.com/video/CfHhlexspfc/video.html )
    and the real availability in the market of this kind of ammo for a cheap price.
    Eric, regarding Part 2, I hope to see in the Boyd stock action, thank you.

      Savage has made some changes and continue to try and improve upon what they have. There will be more information on that when Part Two is released this coming Tuesday. It won't include any video with the Boyds stock, as all of this was filmed from July 2014, to September 2014. The second video will also speak about the new B.MAGs that are soon to be available from the factory. - Thanks! Eric

      Yep! That sculpture for just 566 bucks (and surely even less on the street) it is hard to believe :) I am drooling.
      Eric, what do you think , how much weight does the laminated stock add? The Model: B.Mag- Stainless Heavy Barrel with polymer stock is just 5 lbs.

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 8 lety

      +Mark Moffitt - The recall covers the rear cap behind the bolt on the B.MAG rifles. On some rifles, it is catching the safety, and pulling it off safety. If the rifle you are looking at needs the recall, you just need to fill in some info on their site, and they will send you a kit to change it out. There is more information here: www.varminter.com/savage-arms-issues-recall-notice-on-17wsm-b-mag-rifle-bolts/ - The rifle in this video is the Savage B.MAG SKU #96915.

      I can't remember, and my notes are tucked away, but I typically shoot from 75 to 200+ yards for videos. The second part of this video shows me shooting a prairie dog at 359 yards, on video.

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 8 lety

      +Jason Mantovani - Hi Jason. Yes, Franklin Armory makes an AR15 style rifle in this cartridge (as well as uppers to build your own), and Volquartsen makes one as well. The 17HMR comes in a few semiautos now. Take a look through the videos on this channel, and you will see the videos on the Savage A17 in 17HMR.

      You quoted, "Gee man your so good". No where in this video does anyone say that. You also spelled "your" wrong. It should be spelled "you're", for "you are". Second language, or not, there is no excuse for poor spelling, no punctuation and poor grammar. Please correct those issues before submitting any future comments.

    have know problem with hunting for food. but to kill for sport and not eat the animal u killed is sad. anyone shooting and killing a animal just to kill it. is borderline serial killer.

      Hi Charles. Please send me your mailing address, and I would be happy to send you some of the ground squirrels I shoot for your consumption. Btw, I am always astonished by people who complain about varmint hunters shooting vermin, but benefit from the fact that we do. Your beef, milk, fruit and vegetable prices are all affected by the amount of crop-loss the farmer has. By shooting the ground squirrels, etc, the farmer's crops produce more fruit and prices can stay lower. However, if the farmer loses much of his crop to damage done by varmints, his expenses are the still the same, so they must raise prices. I'll look for your mailing address.
