  • Always Board Never Boring is very pleased to announce a forthcoming Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign from Ian Schofield called Beautiful Dungeon Mats. This campaigns is offering artwork for nine different dungeon maps that can be printed on paper, neoprene, or cloth to provide backdrops for tabletop roleplaying games such as D&D and Pathfinder or dungeoncrawling board games like HeroQuest.
    In this video we take a look at all nine map designs, and see what "The Classic" looks like when it's transferred onto 3ft x 3ft neoprene.

      I know what you mean, but Ian is an artist and this is really the best way to get his work out into the world. If he was selling neoprene mats, which are very heavy, he has to worry about production, shipping charges and importing/exporting, and of course, that also works out more expensive for some customers. This way, you can buy the art you want, and source the cheapest local supplier to get it put onto the material of your choice.

    They do look quite interesting.
    The 1" thick walls are a great idea for the doors. If the original map was available with that wall thickness, I would be on to that in a flash. The original board can get a bit cramped, so the extra space would be welcome.
    I was also thinking that the thick walls also allow for hidden corridors. The thickness allows for a story device where the players, or denizens, could move from room to room via a passage inside the wall, bypassing others in an adjacent regular corridor.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      I really liked the thick walls. Even Avalon Hill's board gets a bit cramped, and the thicker walls help a lot. Even if miniatures overhang their spaces a bit, the walls mean they are less likely to intrude on anything else. The idea of hidden corridors is really fun. I like that.

    • @DavidGreen_au
      @DavidGreen_au Před rokem

      @@Dubstyles84 Not necessarily. They are large hi-res PDF files, with a Print permission obviously, and probably little else.
      Even if you could open the file in an Illustration application, it would be a big job as the central room is too big to go into the "niche" of the southern room groups.

    I understand what you're saying about the thick walls. I'm not sure if I'm sold on them though. I worry that doors and trapdoors could get lost, and the thick walls make it hard to connect some of the rooms to hallways. This is a fun idea though, and does add some spice to games like HeroQuest, such as players who are already familiar with a given dungeon. Depending on pricing, I'm certainly interested, and if the thick walls do drive me crazy, I can always use the artwork to Photoshop full sized room tiles that can cover those walls.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      It probably isn't going to be a style choice for everyone, but I really liked the clarity of the layout as a result of the thick walls. I also enjoyed the fact I could drop a secret door directly on the wall and keep the space either side free. In classic HeroQuest the position of a secret door token always gave away if an adjacent space was free of traps, because you couldn't have something like a pit token and a door token on the same space. With the thicker walls there is a bit more uncertainty.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +2

      Yes for the most part. I use some Avalon Hill HeroQuest miniatures and secret door tokens in the video. The spaces are 1-inch, which is the right size. But there are a few instances where an overlay won't be the right size. For example, overlays intended to fill the central chamber of a HeroQuest board, like the Frozen Horror's throne room won't fill the central chamber of the Classic and Icy Terror maps because that chamber is bigger.

    Looks really nice. I do wish there was a version that was literally the same layout as the HeroQuest board, but with the 1 square thick walls, as I’d be on it in a flash. That’s the only game I’d actually use this for, so even though the classic has a similar layout, I still wouldn’t be able to use it for HeroQuest. Does look really nice though.

      I understand. I don't really want to speak on behalf of Ian - maybe he will see this and comment - but as he is an artist who works in the world of board games I imagine he is being very careful not to step on any toes.

      @jonathan2950 Před rokem

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I did think that, but then can you really hold copyright on the layout of a grid of squares? I love the look of The Classic mat.
    The other mats are great for D&D and the like, but HQ was not made for diagonal corridors due to how movement works, unless you make some house rules.
    My only issue with this mat is that it would require making some custom double-wide tiles (namely Stairs and the Ice Slide) and 2x2 tiles (Blocked Square, Falling Block, Pits, Slippery Ice, etc.) to fit the wider corridors, as well as larger Throne Room tiles and some 2x2 Ice Vault tiles for the little cell rooms. But these are things most hardcore HQ fans are used to making.
    Those minor "issues" aside, they look amazing!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, as I said in the video the first four maps are more suitable for games like HeroQuest as they don't have any diagonals or curved walls (they are bundled as the Roll to Move pledge accordingly), while the other three maps feel more like D&D maps and are in their own bundle. The vanilla dungeons could be useful for HeroQuest, but really I see those more for tabletop RPGs and skirmish games. As these are all custom maps, I would say they are really for dungeonmasters (and Zargons / Morcars) who are prepared to do the leg work to create custom content.

    I dig the art, but not the size. It's impractical. I would much prefer to see it broken down to a smaller modular size, especially if the KS is only providing digital files. 3x3 just isn't great unless you have a dedicated gaming table that can accommodate the board plus extra room for players and gm's to manage their characters and tracking as most games do. It's also a high cost to print at full size, whereas if this was modularly broken down, you could pick and choose. For heroquest you never use the whole board for your adventure, and it feels like it would be a lot of wasted space. That all said I'm interested, as I'm more than capable of dicing up a pdf file into multiple images for my own use, so I'll check out the KS and see how the pricing looks or if they provide other options. Thanks.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      That's understandable, although all my gaming mats are 3x3 or 4x4 so it didn't seem an unusual or inconvenient size to me personally. I think part of the reason is 3x3 is a pretty common size for gaming mats, so it makes it easy to find a place that will do a custom job for the printing. I also think one of the fun things about HeroQuest is keeping your heroes guessing. You may not necessarily be using the whole map, but they don't know which bits you are using. Anyway, thanks for checking out the video and the campaign.

      I understand that concern, but with HeroQuest and official D&D and Pathfinder miniatures all being on 25mm bases, I personally feel this was the right choice to prevent the mats from becoming too big. It also ensures things like HeroQuest trap tokens and the like still fit neatly.

    as handy as they can be I absolutely do not want to buy a neoprene dungeon mat. I have too many crumbling, rotting mouse pads made out of that very material... they just don't last, especially with the kind of travel and usage I would give such things. I prefer cardboard. it would be one thing if they were cheap and readily available but they're not. they're special order or they're really expensive custom, limited items. no thanks! (but each to their own). granted, a mouse pad has to stand up to your sweaty palm and your plastic mouse rubbing against it for hours each day, vs. a game mat that just gets unrolled and piled up with minis and tiles and cards for a few hours a week, but I can imagine plastic pieces snagging on it or "scratching" into it (and dust will build up unless its stored somewhere, can only wipe it clean so many times if it has a cloth-like surface texture), even if there's no drinks spilled or cheeto dust on it or whatever, and long term storage between games... how to do that so the thing doesn't break down? anything made out of foam like that runs the risk of falling apart or peeling apart over time even before you've got the use out of it that you wanted and then can't be replaced... I guess store them flat in an airtight plastic container away from light and extreme temperatures with a desicating pillow packet inside too? sure, I guess...

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +2

      I have never seen a neoprene gaming mat disintegrate. I have had some for years and they look as good as new. You can wipe them clean, and they store rolled upright in their original packing boxes or the plastic cases supplied by the manufacturer. Also, this campaign is for artwork files. You can arrange to have them printed on paper, card, or cloth if you have such an issue with neoprene.

    • @sethpeterson8261

      I own many mats for games including 2 generic ones that gets used for every game that doesn't have its own, they are always on the table. And none of what youve said is a real issue.
      Other than a small fray here or there they all look brand new after years of use.
