For those of you watching on Publication Day...HAPPY WORLD DIABETES DAY!
Living with this condition is hard...really hard...and I'm in no way trying to undermine that difficulty, but it's given me a lot of positives and taught me a ton of lessons too that are so linked to living with the condition it would be a huge oversight not to acknowledge them.
I also truly believe in acknowledging the positives we can become stronger, more resilient, and can live happier, healthier lives.
Happy Day to you My Fellow Diabuddies

There's also the unexpected practical advantage that we are under advanced medical supervision. I have lots of "healthy" friends that lived with undetected issues like heart disease or liver issues for years, up to a point that could be life threatening. My endo (or the t1d care in my country in general) do regular checkups that can catch issues in advance.

Thanks for the reminder of the positive tings diabetes brings. My mother who was a T1D for 45 years, claimed she was much healthier having diabetes than if she hadn’t had it. Her mind remained sharp right to the end (95) and she even gave her own insulin the first two years she was in the nursing home. She drove (even on our major highways) and lived in our family home until she was 92. Something to aspire to!

When I was diagnosed in 1975, I asked my pediatrician if there would ever come a time when we could test blood sugars at home. He looked very sad, & said "Not in your lifetime."
I am so grateful for my Dexcom - & wish my Father & sister could have access to CGM. Maybe they would still be here. And Andrea - you are amazing! I really needed to be reminded there are positives to living with TP1 - thanks!

I never really thought about the positives to that extent. I do find it a burden sometimes but on the other hand it's just something I've accepted. I think if i look at my diabetes more positively I won't feel as down when something doesn't go right. Thank you for this.

Thank you so much for the positivity and encouragement. My 9 year old son Matthew was just diagnosed on 9/11/21 and we still have so much to learn. It has been one of the most challenging times for our family. One of the nurse’s at the hospital told us to take it one day at a time and sometimes one hour at a time. I am so grateful for my son and for the support we’ve had through this. Every day is a gift no matter how hard it might be. Thank you for this uplifting reminder to focus on all the good there is!

      @lnnormand9341 Před 2 lety

That nurse is right. I am type 1. 50 years, i was 10. The best advice my doctor gave me back then was: "You are living with this and you will know what to do. You do what's right for you". He was right. I have met a lot of doctors including endos who are not sure how to deal with this because they don't live with me. A lot of times its a guessing game, too much or not enough insulin, still today. But it is every day, every hour, as long as he keeps at it.Good luck.

Honestly, this was a wonderfully emotional video to watch. I laughed and cried all at the same time while my husband and cats looked at me from across the room not undertanding the range of emotions I was experiencing. I must've looked like a lunatic :). As you said in this video, it's quite something, being aware of how thin that line really is and the work it requires to keep ourselves alive everyday. The empathy we gain on top, heh, that's the real killer for me.
Anyway, staying on track, my life has gone through a lot of (not so easy) changes lately and I was feeling a bit crappy about my betes today. I only recently found your videos and I'm super grateful for that because boy oh boy can I relate. I see a lot of myself in you, your positivity and attitude towards Type 1 and life. So, even though I generally never comment, I couln't help but want to thank you today. You, a complete stranger from the other side of the world, have helped me in ways that many people can't even imagine. Watching you, I know you understand. All of this needs no explanation to a type 1.
I wore my Free Style Libre 2 today for the first time and I only had the courage to do so after watching your videos. I was scared senseless for some reason. So once again, thank you Andrea, beautifully kind stranger for making these videos and making a difference.
In short, excuse my emo ramblings and thanks for the awesome vid! :)

  • @kevinjohnston8100

Andrea you and the other vloger I follow dont realise how much help and support we gain from these videos. Everything you have talked about is spot on plus getting it wrong at times is ok as you guys point out. We are all human and do get things wrong or just get plain fed up. But watching you guys and going through the comments from everyone and taking what we need from them is empowering and does so much as least for me to keep on track and focused on living well. These are as good as a hospital visit for me. So keep those videos and tips coming so we can all have an input and learn from it other. Keep well everyone.

So I don’t know how this popped up in my CZcams feed, but I want to thank you for what you’re doing because I needed to watch this and hear those items, I’m 48 years old currently and I’ve had type one diabetes since I was 14 years old, I’ve overcome a lot over the years and not having a bachelors. I was able to become a police officer for a couple years all the while being a diabetic. You hit the nail on the head and that it’s completely hidden and people look at you, and they don’t know really anything, I have to remind my loved ones it’s like working a completely second full-time job and never getting paid for it or acknowledged about it or any benefits from it in the amount of stress it puts on you, keep up the good work!

You said it and its on the point!... and i am so grateful for the things that came during the last years, because every step, every invention was a boost of confidence and happiness because life was easyer to manage. It was harder some years ago, not knowing the glucose level every time... and running arround with siringes or pens, waking up in the night sweating not knowing the glucose level was so low, one could die next- but it was in our hands, every day. @@louisequinlan6069 I completely hear you! I think the mental health aspect is the hardest part of type one diabetes, this is why I always say “I’m wishing you a happy, healthy mind with it all” at the end of my videos, because truly I think this is imperative and also, naturally at times a challenge. I absolutely do think the first year is the hardest…things get easier and more automated as the days accumulate and knowledge and adaptation increases. Please please please know this. Keep going. One step at a time. You are on the right track and you are amazing, and have this my friend!! 💙😘

What a great message to send out to the diabetics. While I would give up every single one of these positives for my son to not be diabetic, I still love that you see the glass half full. You are a great example. While you were talking I noticed Mary Poppins in the frame behind you and thought you remind me of her and her upbeat approach to life--and you both are adorable.

Not so sure about Mary Poppins singing "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down" works for us type 1's, but the the philosophy is solid. The best to your son and to you as well.

Interesting approach to the diabetic humor... I don't know if you ever tried it, but FB has communities of diabetes.. Here in the US, you learn about technology hacks and a lot of kind help from the community (which makes FB really an amazing tool to unite all us so easily). I agree how amazing it is that there are so many technological advancements to help us make this condition easier. I wish the progress was faster.. And as you mentioned, there are other conditions that we can't detect.. However, I wish some of the other conditions have some faster resolutions.. Obviously, Covid has made things harder than ever... But positivity is key.. Family is key and Faith helps brings it all together.. Thanks for bringing your great energy and looking forward to seeing more resourceful videos!

My main positive is what Andrea pointed out: makes me eat healthier.
I lost a bunch of weight when i first became diabetic (whish i'd staid in keto acidosis four a few more pounds lololol) and the disease has required that i make better eating choices which has kept the weight off and honestly that does make me feel better about myself.
So that's my silver lining to this whole thing. Hope you all can find yours too!

Your comments did make me pause and think that we do manage maintaining our life every day. Your suggestions on how you deal with the holidays that are fast approaching would be helpful. Easier for us that are retired and don't face those holiday tables of goodies at work during this period. I have heard of care facilities that will throw all caution to the wind on Thanksgiving Day so everyone can be like everyone else. Can't say I'll do that but do plan on pumping more insulin than usual. And with daylight shorter and temperatures dropping it sure isn't easy to go out and walk off some carbs while everyone else is cozy watching football games on the sofa. For those that have a diabetic in their lives, may I at least suggest an offer to take that walk with them.

Thank you Andrea for this..lots of people would scorn me for saying this, but T1D has been a blessing for me to the point that I can’t see myself living without it. Embracing T1D has forged a strength in me that I never knew existed. Even though it’s exhausting, relentless, consuming, literally endless, I wouldn't change a thing, because of what it’s taught me and because of the principles it’s instilled in me. In many ways it’s been a blessing in disguise.

When I was pregnant with my two kids I was able to hide it a little longer bc I was trying to hide it until 10-13 weeks. People be like hey to want a glass of wine and I said no my blood sugar is off today. Turns out everyone one knew I was preggo bc I was a little sick and I was going to the bathroom every 5 sec. Friends and family were trying to get me to announce it and I would play the diabetic card.

    Great video.
The "counting your blessings" one is a big one for me, we are very very lucky to have lived in a time when not just insulin but also CGMs and ultra-rapid insulins are a thing. But, conversely, I also hear people complaining about their food and think "you have absolutely no idea mate".
But the biggest one for me is health. Type 1 aside, I've never been healthier. I'm eating way more healthily than I ever did and, most importantly, have discovered a new love of biking every day. I'm far fitter than I ever was thanks to Type 1.
