Hi! My name’s Andrea! I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic for over 20 years and have had my share of highs and lows (pun absolutely and utterly intended!)
Because Diabetes is such a profoundly personal disease, this channel is nothing more than my own experience of being a Diabetic and the reality of living with a chronic condition. I would never dream of telling a fellow Diabuddy how to manage their disease - but if we can all share tips and tricks I think that would be top notch- almost like a blood sugar of 5.5 mmol/L (100 ml/dl)! 🤣
DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional of any kind - simply a girl with Type 1 Diabetes! Nothing that I post should be taken as medical advice. Please consult your doctor before making any changes to your treatment plan and seek medical advice if you have any questions about your individual Diabetes management.

Diabetes is stressful in and of itself, then take all the various supplies, gadgets and gizmos that we have to keep track of…it’s a lot!
When I sat down to plan this video the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the way I organize my supplies is more than just storage, it’s a deliberate and structured way of ensuring I always have a continuous flow of the supplies that I need. In this video I talk through how and why I organize all my supplies in the way that I do and that exact structure.

I learned at 18 My life changed so much everyday Has to be planned out If you take insulin😢
The pump is the best way to go. I does a lot of thinking for me. The thing is I don't want another gimmick, I WANT A CURE. C'MON you greedy pharma assholes. And, the new Medtronic gear is a pain in the ass to install every seven days. Bullshitting us that 'no more finger sticks' is a great benefit does not over ride the fact that jabbing that sensor in FUCKIN' HURTS. And, the blood.......
Amanda Ripley is badass in real life too❤. (But more cute)
You're so lucky to have someone who cares.
Yes to all of this. Some comments on videos from this one channel I follow, though well-intentioned and containing sentiments like hope she’s better soon, make me shake my head. The measures parents of diabetic children take like the dexcom or omnipod changes are what is keeping their children alive and indeed, there is no break.
In the middle of getting a diagnosis and it's been so frustrating because no one in my family believes that this is actually happening and that something is actually wrong with me. I'm 30, so I'm in my own care, and it's good to know from reading and watching these stories that things will get easier and better with time.
Great videos thank you for helping us understand and talk with a friend about going on a pump.
Almost everyone who says, "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" usually has a lot of need and very little ability.
thank you ! I recently just started insulin pump. I was searching for a new spot to put in and your video is a great help!!
So.... basically your complaint is that looking out for your health, just like any other good thing, costs money and requires effort.
But how did you get your hair to look so awesome?? 👏
When I first used this app back when I first started carb counting (2014), it was completely free. Now they're charging £36/pa, which is a big jump. It also makes no sense what's free and what's part of the paid for section. I looked up an apple. It told me that an 85g apple is 9g carbs, a 130g apple is 13g carbs, but to find out what 170g apple is, I have to pay £36/pa. But even I can work out, it would be 17g. I'll continue to use the free part, and maybe it'll come down in price enough that I can afford it, or it reverts to being free again.
Once I thought I was telling my pod I'm 175 but I accidentally said Give me 175 19 units enough for two pizzas I had no food at my old house so my mom rushed over to my old house with normal soda and candy with that much insulin I almost killed myself
You’ve said it all ! I love your videos. When you have to have a procedure, you have to figure out are you going to go low ,etc…"😢
I struggle with wearing my t slim pump to bed. As a women night clothes are not mostly made to wear a pump. Suggestions?
I hear you 10000%! I always look for pj bottoms with a good elastic waistband that I could clip it onto (I attached a stick on clip directly to my pump - you can get them on Amazon and see what I'm talking about in previous videos before I switched to the Omnipod 5 about a year ago). And I would always face the pump screen inwards. A lot of people also just leave it loose and have it "follow them around" but that never worked for me personally. I hope this helps! Take a look at my video about hiding my insulin pump too - in case any of those ideas would be helpful!! czcams.com/video/-csDveXqR_c/video.html
❤ to see you! Again thank you for your kind words. Friends and family always appreciate the input and encouragement offer! Stay strong 🥰❤😢❤🎉❤😊
Thank you thank you thank you for YOUR kind words and for watching and encouraging me!!!! Sending love and strength to you too my friend!!! Xxxxx
Thank you so much for this video, Andrea! I am about four years into this diagnosis and continue to learn so much every day. This video was huge for helping me navigate the Omnipod 5, since it never seemed that the algorithm was strong enough for me. I am a healthcare provider myself and realize our providers are doing their best to keep us safe and healthy, but these hacks have really helped give me better control! Keep doing what you’re doing, I appreciate you!
It is interesting to see that you need to go through such "tricks" for the system to be more aggressive. On my channel I reviewed this year's Omnipod study (made by people of the company), and it seems that there lowest possible target average glucose is 110 (or 6.1 mmol). Also, and interestingly, half of adults in that studies did not manage to get 70% or more time in range. I wonder in your case if some other automatic systems like Ypsopump would give you more flexibility? Have you thought of switching to that rather than having to do things like "pump and dump" as you describe?
Interesting comparison. I had made a video about Fiasp actually, but it is of course worth trying both czcams.com/video/hYd2Pl0dJ4c/video.html I think it is good for people to try different insulins so that they can find the best one. I sometimes wonder why doctors choose Fiasp or Lyumjev for their patients, given that both insulins, at least on paper, are very similar in action profile.
Okay so in the UK our Healthcare costs come out of general taxation and in effect the more wealthy you are, the more tax you pay, if those wealthy people didn’t want to do that they would move elsewhere. The UK system ensures treatment is available to all at the point of need, because we’e a caring society. What would USA Americans do if their Healthcare model was applied to Firefighting, or Defence or Homeland Security?
Sorry but you are giving a very distorted and misinformed view of US healthcare vs UK. In the UK you have glaucoma or cataracts.....wait 18 months for treatment. Need a new joint....wait a year or never. You do not have to have your credit card out to get care in US. Walk into any ER and you will be seen no questions. I have Medicare Advantage. I pay ZERO$ monthly. I pay $ZERO to see my regular doctor. I pay $35 to see a specialist. My wife had 3 surgeries in the span of a year. We paid out of pocket $1750. US best care in the world. My wife has to see MULTIPLE specialists for several problems. The most we waited to get in was 45 days. If a problem further developed before that appointment we would be seen immediately by our primary or the ER.
Merhaba 😊 "walk at home" CZcams kanalı videolarındaki egzersizleri yapıp sonrasında hiperglisemi olan tek ben miyim? Tempolu egzersiz sonrası hiper çok üzücü 😢
My daughter uses the Omnipod Dash at the moment. We find that on the third day the adsorption seems to be a lot worse meaning she tends to go high and a lot more insulin in used. I assume this would cause an issue with the Omnipod 5 algorithm?
I must say I find the 3rd day to be rather hit or miss myself too! It does cause an issue at times, but to get around it I've asked my Endo to prescribe a change of pod every two days so I have enough pods to do that if I need and that helps circumvent the problem. I sometimes have a pod that's just good and I let it go the full 3, but If I sense absorption is dropping off I change it right away. I hope this helps!!
I’ve been on the Omnipod 5 since August, my doctor said I know my body and my sugars better than doctors he said that if I need to adjust anything go to the manual mode and edit your basal rate and carb changes if needed and so far it’s helped.
There will never be a cure to diabetes. To do so would break the world economy.
I was diagonsed in 1974 at age 24. I had gone from 155 lb. to 115 lb. I was making chocolate malts on our newly received wedding gift, an Osterizer mixer, in an attempt to gain weight. Fortunately, my mother-in-law saw me in the middle of the night while I was making one of my frequent trips to the bathroom and noticed my protruding ribs. She told my wife the next morning to make an appointment for me with an endocrinologist. She did, and he gave me a glucose tolerence test. My blood sugar level was 880 mg/dL. I was hospitialized for five days and put on insulin (in those days it was pork insulin, insulin extracted from a pigs pancreas at the slaughterhouse). My doctor told me that we would reverse roles, no one knew my body better than I did, so I was to be my physician and he would be my consultant. He told me to learn as much as I could about the disease (then referred to as juvenile diabetes) by joining the American Diabetes Association and subscribing to it's publications. Excellent advice! I am now on an insulin pump and have a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). I have pretty good control, with a recent a1c of 6.1.
After years of telling my husband that I wasnt crying in a hypo because I was pissed off, but that it is what it does to your nervous system, he still used to shout at me about it..he is now ex as he didnt want a wife with Type 1 and went off and cheated on me. I am not a bad or difficult person. He certainly wouldnt be like yours. He also used it to beat me up verbally and mentally with and use against me. And I am a good a type 1 as possible so now I keep everything to myself and don't tell anyone what is happening to me. Apart from my Mum who is great and understands. I am better off without diabetes police but it is very lonely.
Outstanding comparison/presentation! Thank you!!
Oh wow! Thank you so so much for saying that and for watching!!!
If you ever wanted to make some guided meditation type videos, I feel like your voice would be perfect for it
Oh that means SO MUCH TO ME!!! Thank you!!! Maybe I'll give that a try!!!
@@ShesDiabetic you’re welcome! I’ll watch them if you do
So true! Everyday I live with this going on in my head! Spot on!
💙
Totally agree. My wife is fantastic always looking out for me,even though all the various alarms can drive her mad and me to be fair 😂
Oh I love that you have such a champion in your wife! That is THE BEST!! I'm sure the alarms drive my husband a little crazy too lol!!!
I was diagnosed 3 years ago at age 47. Didn't even know you could get diabetes that old. Hardest thing ever. I've had more than one break down bc of the stress. 😢❤
Not trying to invalidate your feelings. Isn’t diagnosis in adulthood type 2 diabetes? Have heard type 2 can become type 1 if your pancreas isn’t working at all. Type 2 diabetic here officially diagnosed almost two years ago at age 34 but didn’t really take things seriously enough to get a referral to diabetes education until like October of 2023.
Everyday
💙
To keep my glucose in range, I do NOT eat/drink starchy carbs, sugar, caffeine, 99.9% processed foods (I a lot of peanut butter lol), I eat very tiny portions. Not a fun life. No pump, yet. At 70, this is a new diagnosis. Ugh.
I need more diabuddies😊
We can be diabuddies!!!
Im very glad that I found this channel and again thank you so much for making me feel less alone on the Diabetes journey ❤😢
Oh my goodness you are so so so so so welcome - and I thank YOU so so so so soooo much for also making me feel less alone too! It definitely works both ways!! I'm so grateful for your kind words, truly I am - thank you for being here and being such a stupendously kind human to me!!!!!!! 💙
Sometimes I feel like I'm alone people say I understand but if they don't live with the disease they don't know what we go through.
Totally and utterly hear you - this is a really hard disease to ever know the ins and outs of without living it - almost impossible - that's why I felt the need to create this channel - I needed that connection with people that 'just get it' 🥹💙
Holy moly, I feel so seen right now. Thank you!
You are so welcome. Man, oh man, burnout is SO REAL and SO THE WORST!!!!! You've got this my friend. You are so so so not alone 💙
I've never had anyone make sure I'm ok. I'm just made to feel bad for having a rough diabetes day.
Life is easier for anyone with a chronic condition when those who love them understand what makes a good or hard day. Diabetes is complex. It takes effort to understand. Retired Endocrinology RN
Oh my gosh - I really love how you put this and thank you so much for sharing these words with us. Wow. Truly I'm kind of blown away by how accurate this is.
My wife is fantastic in this regard! She really goes out of her way to cook low carb meals!
That is so wonderful!!!!! Having a supportive partner is just such a blessing!!!!
Yes, it’s true. It’s a chronic disease. I’ve been living with it for 40 years now. Thank God for the new technology! Just put your mind to it and we’ll be fine.
Love this!! And right you are - thank goodness for all the new technology!! We are so lucky to live in a time where that exists!!!
I had a pcp who ordered a GAD 65 test, but NEVER talked to me about results. 5 months later, the resident pharmacist was talking to me over the phone about other issues, then asked if pcp talked to me... so she told me I was adult onset type 1. Pcp NEVER talked to me. I was paying for a cheap insulin & trying to figure it out myself for over 2 years!! Changed pcp's, got an endo/diabetes specialist... what a gift ftom God!! I was 67 at diagnosis, in late 2021. But I was not even prediabetic in 2018. I just seldom eat what most people eat daily. Use a dexcom g7, 2 types of insulin, doing very well... at 70, not what I ever imagined for myself in my twight! 😢 years! 😢
I’ve been diabetic for 2 years - I had a total pancreatectomy in 2022 because of pancreatic cancer. I’ve only just found this channel but I love how positive your energy is! I’m from the UK but worked in the states for a few years (before all of this happened) and I got super sick once, and having to be on the phone whilst an insurer convinced me not to have an ambulance because it was too expensive was just crazy… I cannot imagine the stress with private healthcare whilst dealing with these severe health issues. Keep doing what you’re doing and thank you for the videos ❤
I'm a type 1 Diabetic and in my backpack, I carry an organizer pouch of backup insulins/needles/various first aid, a densely packed snack pouch, my primary insulin/needles pencil pouch, and a cute little pouch that fits most all of the different backup meters I've had to use through the years. That's the extent of what I always have related to diabetes management. I try to always carry water but I tend to drink diet sodas typically.. 🙃
Just convinced a 44 year old friend he’s been diabetic his whole life and it’s like oh yeah it explains the mood swings, lack of weight gain, seizures, extreme amounts of pain- he’s still in denial but maybe just maybe I finally got back to him
I had Covey training today at work (From the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People) and my diabetes management was one of my important goals so when I saw this video, it was great timing. I think I took just as many notes from your video. Hope you don't mind if I steal your mantra! Thanks!
Totally agree. I often find myself actively trying to 'hide' my condition in ways. I fear that people might get bored of my expressing that I've got low blood sugar after playing soccer/or high blood sugar after a meal or sometimes at random. No one understands T1 unless they have it. And that extends to doctors too, in my experience.
Fellow T1. It is relentless. I count myself lucky in some ways, though. Today (in Scotland) I have free and ready access to insulin and bluetooth glucose monitors and as a result my HBA1C is usually around 6-7%. I often think about those who are (and were) similarly afflicted with this disease who had limited or zero options for control. It's a horrible disease but I've (and I'm sure others who read this) got it as good as it's ever been in terms of management.
My sole mate my partner 33 years killed himself 8 weeks ago his diabetes medication wasn't working right he had real low sugars for a while he wasn't telling anyone by the time I realised it was too late I could not save him
