I think many of us experienced a similar level of disappointment. The first ESC I remember watching and understanding was 1970 and I was not just upset that Mary Hopkin (who grew up a few miles from me in Ponterdawe) didn’t win, I was quite resentful about Dana beating her, and even angry at Ireland for having the temerity to prevent our Mary from winning.
@@martinphillips3432 Oh, 1970 was tough, tough, tough all round for seven-year old me. Got even worse a couple of months later. Two words. Gerd. Muller.
So I'm an American who is on a binge of Top of the Pops history and saw Bardo on an '82 show and I'm addicted to this song! Anyway, as an outside viewer, it's really no surprise this didn't win, IMO. I LOVE this song! But this performance just isn't great. It's definitely good, but not great and not "I'm at Eurovision" good. They definitely seemed nervous and there truly was too much movement, which, of course, makes you breathy. It's a GREAT performance for Top of the Pops when you're miming. It would've been great if they were a normal duo and this was just a normal performance after it was a hit song. This song is amazing, so standing in place most of the time (like Bucks Fizz the year before) would've been stellar. But this performance at this competition just doesn't cut it.
@woflover I'm very unsure, as the 1983 entry for germany did not use the orchestra so I do not believe so, but I do agree, the orchestra BOMBED this song, they butchered the host entry!
@@woflover the rules were that you either had to use the orchestra, play the instruments that weren't in the orchestra live or use a backing track, but pretend that you were playing the instruments (or any combination of those three). With the 6 person limit, the last option was quite difficult if you needed a lot of different instruments, though a lot of winners did use a backing track anyway (go watch ABBA's performance in 1974 - the guitars aren't plugged in, they were miming playing them to a prerecorded instrumental).
Just been to a performance of the play ‘Seconds Away’ tonight and didn’t realise Sally Ann Triplett was part of the cast. Autograph, selfie, night made. An absolute Eurovision Icon.
Geez, 37 years... scary how time slips away! I remember this well. Terry Wogan, ever the optimist, wrote 'this is a good song and should win the competition'. Nicole won at a canter, but this really should have done better than 7th, as others have said. And so the downward spiral began. I don't think the UK seriously challenged again for many years (1997?).
the downwards spiral in decent song quality started in 2000 for us, then we never produced a song that was even worthy of qualifying, cause I bet ya we would've never qualified without the big 5
Heard this on the radio the other day; I'd forgotten it was a Eurovision entry; great pop song. Hard to replicate that big 80's production live; the band's a bit weak. But no worse, and no less watchable, than the previous year's Buck's Fizz.
I was hoping to find someone would have said this as I don't know how they won either as this song doesn't even compare to the other. And to think this was the bookies favourite also which makes me wonder what they were smoking at the time. Saying that though it was popular, but that doesn't say much either since popular music isn't always the best music due to it being designed for a wide audience.
They could have survived that had the acoustics not been so awful. I suspect the BBC powers that be didn't want a second win. betnod.com/threads/eurovision-song-contest-2016.7949/
No one was beating Nicole. That said, had the sound mix not been so awful and the performance so poor, it would have likely done better than 7th (though Austria and Luxembourg still thought this was the best song).
The single was so good and then the Eurovision performance was like two cats with their tails caught in the gates screeching at each other...7th place was bloody generous
The song and performance were total trash. It got 7th because of the English. If this was a Finnish song, it would have sunk to the bottom. 3 mins of Eurovision hell.

It was not a “pretty contest”.

7th place was Was good.
Bought the single of this as a kid of 11 and fell madly in love with the girl. It should’ve won, not that awful German dirge.
This sounded a lot worse with a full-on orchestra, the song had no room for a wind and strings section at all.
For me, it could've been a respectable runner -up but there was another song that took that spot for me, so this for me is a respectable 3rd place.
One of the best UK entries, I fear the poor orchestration on the night ruined its chances, the studio version is so much better.
The guy reminded me of David Cassidy, maybe it was done on purpose.
If hadn't for the substandard dance routine they would probably have won
