  • Do you feel like life is a constant game of catch-up? No matter how much you strive to get and do, you feel like you need to do more or have more?
We’re encouraged to seek out success, wealth, and material possessions, against which we measure our status, self-worth and happiness. We continually strive to achieve these things, but when we get them, we feel only a fleeting sense of happiness before setting our sights on the next thing. And this pursuit of 'stuff' often comes at the sacrifice of our physical, mental, and emotional health.
There’s no denying that money is an important part of our society and having a degree of financial stability increases our ability to enjoy life. But the reality is that most of us live in a world of overabundance. We need to realise that we have enough. We need to stop linking our self-worth and happiness to doing and having more. That’s a journey worth taking.

I lived for 33 years with my husband who chased the consumer dream for himself. Boats, yacht club, working all hours.Paying one credit card with another one. I on the other hand never wanted that lifestyle. i was content with my books, my friends and my dog. One day he came and said that I was not the kind of woman he wanted. He wanted someone like himself. He divorced me and married a woman who is like him. I do not know if he is happy, but I hope so. I moved from a custom home to a former crack den in a rough part of town. It was truly an awful place, run down and very dirty. My friends and I cleaned and painted it. We had parties on Sunday afternoons filled with good food and laughter. I was the happiest I had ever been in my life. All of my worldly possessions fit into the back of a mini van. I buy as little as possible and I know the real value lies in being kind, loving and helpful. I try to live lightly on the Earth, to me She is sacred. Blessed Be.

I’m at the end of my life, with heart and kidney failure, and my illness started 3 1/2 years ago. When I realized I wasn’t going to live to long, I started to go through a lot of changes about how I see life. I spent so many years trying to collect stuff and make more money, now I see that what I was doing was taking me away from the real joy in life. I thought I was doing what I was suppose to do, that’s what I learned as an American. Now, the joy is in every small thing, my son, nature, the relief of loosing the feeling I need more, instead, I enjoy and feel greateful for what I have. I can’t look back now and think about what I didn’t do, that doesn’t help, but now I’m living more in the time I have left, then all the years I was chasing the dollar and stuff. I believe the disease of wanting more in America is what is killing it’s soul. I live in Egypt now, around a lot of poverty, and these people have taught me how to be greateful for every small thing I have, and still be happy. At first living around poverty put me in shock, and I use to think these people have nothing, yet they are always smiling, what’s wrong with them. Now I learned their secret, I went so far to learn this, and now there are not many people I connect with from my own country, they think I’m crazy, LOL

3 years later, I can say the simple life is for me! Before I divorced, my ex's family was very materialistic. They would make fun of me for not having a $3K purse or a new car (My Jeep is 12 years old.) My home was too small and my clothes are all second hand. I left all of that, gave away most of it. I drove away with what could fit in my Jeep, and that included 4 cats, a dog and a box of memories. Just gave the rest away and went and chased my passions in life. My divorce left me financially and spiritually broken but I am slowly smiling again. I am middle age and not afraid. Funny thing is, I make more money now than I ever did and I care share it with animal rescues, I make big family style meals for the people who I love and love me, unconditionally, and I can take trips to quiet places and take photographs. I just took a ceramics class, first time in 35 years and it brought me back to being a kid and playing in the mud. I need a good cup of coffee too, so I can slowly sip and mull over my day and smile. Someone recently gifted me some linen material. It has the most beautiful feel to it. I dyed it with some turmeric and now I have some sunny curtains, swaying in my kitchen. I owe no one. I rent a place and I have few bills. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I have such happy memories of the warmth, kindness, laughter and great values shared by those people who lived through WW2. My father taught at Universities in Eastern and Central Africa for years. Fondest memories of those times, we knew the riches of contentment without feeling any pressure to acquire and display trappings of wealth. I tried to fit in with London life for years, but I struggled with the insincerity and greed of it all. No longer in London but still see through the pathetic attempts to control the masses. Snacks, biscuit and alcohol aisles in supermarkets, for a start. Anti-depressant medications from the GP given out like sweets. The best thing we can do is try to pass to our children on a sense of what really matters. And relay stories about the grandparents.

As someone who has been struggling with the concept of insatiability, this video hit home. Society will always tell me that I'm unsatisfied because modern society runs on consumerism but I am finally at the point where I have everything I could possibly need and that's enough, for me. I'm learning to put my disposable money towards caring for my health, pursuing creative hobbies, seeking therapy for healing, showing loving-kindness, cultivating solid friendships, and traveling the world.

While growing up I lived with my big family
my Dad worked but not in the winter months much
Mom knew how to grow a garden can her vegetables
For the winter as kids we loved to go to the apple tree
Across from the church we belonged to and climbed
And shook apples to the ground and filled our T-shirt’s
With them and took them home to Mom she made all
Sorta of pies and canned applesauce then in mid July
Mom would take us to the thickest part of the blackberry
Bushes picking for hours so we could take them home
To help make jams with them early Saturday mornings
I would go to Pic n Pay to grocery shop with her we grew up
Playing outside with the other 64 playmates on our street and
Came up with so many games to play it was so much fun
Not once did I think my family was poor in money because
We were so loved by such good parents and I loved them ❤️

Young one, you're the same age as my nephew is now. I hope you're still around on CZcams. I hope you have found peace. I'm 38. Please be wise with the way you spend your money. Do not waste it on brands or new tech that will be replaced by new brands and new tech. Don't waste it on a new car or truck, get something reliable from 5-10 years ago. Save for land, even if it's only an acre on the edge of a big city you love. Build a home on it for cash, even if it's a tiny home or manufactured home. Develop your independence and self-reliance outside of what social media and society throws at you. Learn to grow your garden, even if it's only a few plants. Learn to fix things, even if you fail the first time, the internet provides a wealth of free knowledge. Ignore your peers, have mercy and pity on them because they allowed themselves to be caught up in consumption. This is the advice I would have given myself at 23.

People unfortunately with a lot of money are just as stressed out than those who have 5 people living in a 1 bedroom apartment.....SAD!!! WE as a society have lost the true meaning of what is important and I would rather sleep better knowing that I have valued far more people by listening to them as true individuals than being dishonest and driving a $200k car to impress total strangers that only find value in what I own rather than how they look at me as a genuine individual!!! I agree with everything here. But I caution one thing: without financial savings, once you retire and your body ages, your health can take sudden, unplanned turns. So please, when you are young, set aside the money you save by choosing not to go to the coffee shops every day or whatever is your temporal pleasure, and bank this savings. My husband quit smoking and our reward was: what we saved paid for our vacations. We have had wonderful vacations that we are becoming less able to do. We both had meaningful jobs or were self-employed, no debt for many years and have a good retirement fund. It is all about "balance" with simple pleasures. The biggest hope this video brings is that it is never too late to start.

Having an old car that needs to be fixed from time to time is also a blessing. Having a small house where all your family members are fine and no one is ill is another blessing. Being able to wake up, see, talk, smell, walk oh man that's a whole blessing there. It is the best job in the world and also the worst! Keeping the mind 'tame' is the key to a happy life, knowing when to accept the 'downs' without becoming down and accepting the highs without becoming 'euphoric!' What is enough? You can. It is a journey, but you are starting on that path younger than many. Good! And a little hint from someone twice your age -- there is no number one to achieve. It's an illusion. We spend our lives chasing what cannot be caught. When we stop doing that, stop the madness and pressure, we have a chance to discover, and enjoy, reality.
We just sold our "dream" house. We worked many years and did without to achieve a dream that turned into a nightmare. I nearly died in the process of trying to save that dream? For what? Now I live in a place half the size, in need of much updating, but with so much peace and a sense of shelter I had never felt -- and I am much much happier, although I am still looking for more to let go. Moving house shows you that stuff is more burden than blessing! Lol Wishing you all the best. Welcome aboard!

I have just enough money to make my life miserable. I never got married. Never had any kids. Just gotta keep working. I always believe i am not working hard enough. I am starting to question, everything.

I can’t believe I have just found this blog. It’s wonderful. Nature makes me happy. To live in the country, and hear the country sounds. To watch my plants grow and feed the birds. I have lived a very long life and it is good to reflect.

I really wished I knew what truly makes a person happy like I've personally deleted my social medias but I'm more in the point of what do I want to do that makes me happy what do I expire to do and say at the end of the day that I enjoyed my life doing this career I'm not looking for money just living a good peaceful life but that really makes me think about what I want to do in life. I'm 19 years old. I really love this type of videos by the way

You are young, so try different jobs or careers out. Not all of us find a job or lifestyle that suits us right at the start. I started out working as a quahog stuffer, a hospital housekeeper, a kitchen worker at McDonald's. After college I had a good-paying factory job, then worked at a residential home for disabled children. I was a stay at home mother for six years, then became a teacher assistant for 10 years. I went through a divorce, got my Masters degree at 46 and was a teacher for 14 years. I loved teaching children, but after standardized test scores became the focus of instruction and not the children themselves, I took a lesser pension to retire at 59. In my late 40s I met the love of my life. I miss my students, but am happily retired. I think we each have our own journeys to make before we come to a place of contentment. Some find that place sooner. I found it later on. Don't be in a rush to find a "perfect" life. Take chances, be creative and brave, experiment, and eventually you will learn what brings you happiness.

It's true that we don't need fancy homes and expensive cars, but try living on the streets eating at the mercy of strangers, and you realize that money is important. The real miracle is not letting it consume you.

Absolutely agree with you - money has become integral to our modern day lives - to provide a roof over our heads, food on the table, medical care, etc. The question is rather, how much is enough? So many people chasing more and more and more, in excess - when really, they already have what they need to be truly comfortable and content. It's about finding the balance, it shouldn't consume us as you wrote. Sending you warm hugs. Justine and Michael.💚

It's true. Life is all about finding the balance. For some people, a lot is never enough. No matter how much they have, they crave more. It's basically mental illness. Because it steals the heart of your soul...

Money is not everything, but without money we cannot live a simply life.
The problem of the world today is our value system has changed, people do not know the meaning of respect, being kind to each other.
Life is getting more and more expensive, but the salary stay the same, many of us just trying to live above the water.
I was born in the city as a city girl, but now i just want to live close to the mother nature.
Live simply, i need space, sun and good people around me.
I want to live. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful video 💗

Thank you for writing 💚 We think that you describe a yearning that so many of us have to return to a simple, natural state because of our disconnectedness.
      Much love, Michael and Justine
