Last time we took the Miata to the track we ran into so many cooling issues! So we decided it was time to get rid of the old crappy radiator and old cooling bits in order to stop the overheating problems! We went with all the best bits from Flyin’ Miata, BUT upgrading your radiator with the fanciest thing out there might not be the best move for YOUR car. Today we are revamping the entire cooling system on the Miata and talking how to effectively keep your car cool!
Thanks to Flyin’ Miata for sending us all these sick cooling parts!

I love how the Miata is like mid car. Low car was kinda shitty, hi car was waaaay too expensive, and the Miata is supposed to be the best value for money, loving your work Zach! Can’t wait for every Wednesday!
Nima Elyasi I think that by the end, low car was a beast
Of course its the mid car, its the guys personal project car so it is a very thoughtful and practical build, spending money where it matters and not wasting it where its not needed. In other words the ideal kind of project car for the everyman.
Yeah. High car was definitely to a point where I'd rather have a nicer used car like a Z06 or 911 for my $$$$.

Whenever you make big changes to the cooling system, it's a good idea to check if your water pump is in good condition, and wether or not debris is accumulating in it.
if you are already messing around with the cooling system why not just replace water pump and thermostat and maybe even hoses just for peace of mind

lol bruh I got a 95 ford I know exactly what your saying. old trucks are the toughest lol even when idiots like us jack things up. thankfully my dad was there to stop me from ruining the truck
If you live in an area with nice quality soft water, you can fill from the hose for flushing and rinsing cycles only. Your last rinse and drain and your final refill of mixed coolant should be done with distilled or R.O. water though. Here in Arizona, if I filled the system with tap water the car would just vanish from existence as the car gods deemed me unworthy to own and abuse such machinery. 😸 Our tap water leaves a chalky film after evaporating even a tiny bit of it in a glass one time.
The S-10 cannot be destroyed by normal means.
Ive read soft water is better than distilled
If you live anywhere where you may need a heater core use distilled water when diluting your coolant mix or just buy the pre mixed coolant
Rewatching these, it's so funny when Jobe unknowingly predicts how he'll run into trouble by how confident he is in the beginning.
I’m sure you know this, and it might already be in your jumper harness, but that power wire off the alternator doesn’t usually have a fuse, so if the controller gets stuck it can pull so much current it melts and catches on fire. Might be worth adding an inline fuse if it isn’t present already. Really enjoy the videos though! :)
To the whole donut team:
Guys, I deal with cars on regular basis at my job, but sadly, no one is tech savvy around me so if I actually want to perform better I had to learn things on my own. Your videos allowed me to learn in a fun and interesting way and it worked out. Especially the money pit and bumper2bumper episodes! Due to my recently acquired knowledge more and more collegues turned to me for help which gave me the statute of the local expert and naturally raised me as a leader. Good job on presenting the cooling upgrade.
One item you may wish to consider is installing a thermostat that fails open (FO). Most thermostats fail closed (FC), and then your engine overheats. With a FO thermostat, a failure does not cause an engine to burn up.

Great info here, well done. I like how you explained the fan shroud situation. I run a single spal slim mount with no shroud on my built turbo track/street car. It pulls plenty of air to keep things cool at idle, and there isn't a shroud at all, so plenty of flow at high speeds. I like how you explained the crossflow rad design too. Good stuff my guy!

Once you go Turbo, definitely need to look into sealing the radiator between the mouth of the bumper. That right there will likely help 20% of your heat management on track. The other thing is getting an oil cooler as well as thats the life blood of the engine and with F/I things tend to get really hot.
Good advice I live in Florida and we change our fluids every 3 or 4 years just to be sure not to mention the thermostat and the radiator cap. Many overheating problems are caused by bad thermostat and/or radiator cap

Don't forget to run the heat full blast during spirited driving, as the heater core acts like a baby radiator. Edit: the thermostat is a perfect example of an old school device called a wax motor. Heat makes the wax expand and move a piston in a linear motion, they can be found in the detergent door of some dishwashers

Thats not really what track days are for. Upgrade a bunch of things and then go to the track. But to take it just to test the cooling seems petty.
