Putting The Pole Saws To Work ► Testing The ECHO PAS & STIHL Kombi Systems

- Today Brandon and I brought out the STIHL and ECHO Multi Tool systems to share with you guys the pole pruner attachments while we performed some landscaping work.
Brandon had to elevate a few spruce trees in the back of a clients yard, and it looked like a good opportunity to shoot some video and share with you guys the tools that ECHO and STIHL had to offer.
Most of you guys are very familiar with the ECHO PAS 2620 and the STIHL Kombi 131 multi tools. We wanted to take a few minutes and just show you guys how they work and answer a few questions if you've never seen either of them in action.
A quick safety note, always wear your proper PPE when using and hedge trimmers, chainsaws, or other power equipment. Chainsaws and tree work are to be taken seriously and respected. Make sure you wear chaps, helmet, safety glasses, and thick pants/shirts to protect yourself when pruning trees and using chainsaws!
Have you guys used and have any experience with the pole saw or pole pruner from either brand? Let me know with a comment down below which one you guys prefer and why.

I wanted to see the trees finished...
Infected Miller Wait for the chainsaw comparison video!
@@BriansLawnMaintenance ok thanks for the reply.
I switched from stand alone equipment to kombi systems
@@BriansLawnMaintenance my stihl gives the free with stihl equipment perchuse wich is nice
Just got a kombi this year. Absolutly love it! string trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer, power sweep, pole saw...
Saves alot of time and money not having so many powerheads to maintain.
Go stihl!!
I would like to see your review on the Kombi tools that you are using.
im running a 131R for just the reason you said i got it for its flexibility to run multiple implements off one power head. Having a pole saw, string trimmer head, brush blade, articulating hedge trimmer, edger, and bed definer have been a life saver for my small start up this year. I add a carbon fiber extension recently and wow its a huge win to push it just a little father expense but worth the price in weight.
Ove got all echo on my trailer and they havent served me wrong so want to stick with all echo.
I run the PAS 225 for the house. We just have an acre but lots of trees and undergrowth. It’s been a good unit. I like all the attachments except the blower. Thanks for the vid.
I've had Kombi 130r for about 4 years. It always starts by the 3rd pull, has tons of power, and a multitude of attachments. The 130r is a beast!
Yes but too heavy
first new professional piece of equipment i picked up for my business was the 131r and i was able to offer a ton of new services to clients with the attachment system. highly highly recommend it
PAS was a great entry level tool setup. I still trim some pretty gnarly trees every week with it.
I like the ECHO for the compact lite weight design. I've never had an issue with the engine output.
i have the km130r,. i never had to use the choke setting on it to fire it up. it fires up first pull. it has 38cc. half throttle its bouncing off rev limiter. full throttle its screaming on rev limiter. i dont know if your using the 2620t or the 280t but as far as i know its only equivalent to the km90r
Multi tool system is a must in lawn care landscaping. I run stihl, it was my first Combi system and now have all the attachments I need.
Thank you very much for this video. Great stuff guys. Keep them coming
Nice Brian Brandon attachments are the best and only way to go 💪👍
km131r is probably the best investment ive made. sure the attatchments and powerhead cost a ton out the gate but they quickly pay for themselves within a week or 2 of work
Its heavy af
Glad we were able to meet you and the wifey . The GIE was an awesome experience ,great little town ,the best food (HAMMER HEADS and JACK FRYS amazing restaurants)
I use my Stihl Kombi 131R daily. I’ve got the chainsaw extension, trimmer, and brush cutter extensions. Jack Bush, Bushwhackers Lawn Care, Pryor Oklahoma
Guys, I say guys cause Brian says it every other word, toque is the most important thing when it comes to a kombi power head. Torque is a measure of how much a force acting on an object causes that object to rotate. The object rotates about an axis, which we will call the pivot point. So with that said, it doesn’t matter what unit head you buy get the one with the most torque because you will be adding more attachments to that unit then you originally ever thought you would purchase. Chaps really, LOL, that’s overkill but the still head protection is a must and will be use quite often. Overall good review Brian.
Great points. Thanks
I love my Kombisystem, it works awesome with the 6 attachments I have, the powerbase I use is the KM 91 R, I have 14 attachments, I chose STIHL because there's 2 attachments STIHL makes that Echo does not
I just purchased the Husqvarna 525 Combi system. This new system really is a strong competitor to the other two. Price wise it was better too. With the purchase of 3 pre-mixed fuel get a 4 yr warranty. Well balanced and powerful.
Peter Rose I saw it at the GIE it looked solid
I was told the stihl has a lot more moving parts, runs hotter and thus is in the shop alot more often. Over known Stihl to often have complications at my job. However you get max power of Stihl which makes short work of the toughest jobs. I bought the little Echo Pas from home depot back in 2011 and it is STILL running after only 2 tune ups!
It basically comes down to Mercedes Benz (Stihl) Power VS. Honda (Echo) Reliability
Just picked up my Stihl KM131R Kombi and love it! Super powerful.
Great video, learning every time. Tks
Have to agree with you chaps, these combi machines are excellent! Went for the Husqvarna 535LK due to the extra power. You don't seem to use Husqvarna much in the US but it is excellent equipment, I use my combi every day and it's worth it's weight in gold!
Can't wait to see this chainsaw comparison. I have the Ego 16" chainsaw. That thing has some serious torque. Love your videos Brian. Keep them coming.
I order my pas echo 2620 yesterday so ready for it to be here. Thanks for the video Brian
Ive got the 131. Really love the way the 4 mix sounds a lot more than a 2 stroke. Good to know it has more power than the echo that was mainly my curiosity and it makes sense at about 10 more CC displacement.
I like echo a bit more for the warranty. I own both brands, but it’s good piece of mind if stuff breaks
just bought the KM 131 R and shes definitely a beast.
Those are nice, I like to buy one and buy the attachments, the hedge trimmer especially!
I run a pas 2060 and a pas225 love them both the 2 stroke has the high rpm power to get through tough stuff
Use my Stihl kombi system everyday from running as a backup string trimmer to hedges
I have 2 stihl kombi units but for my pole saw I run a Stihl 131 kombi unit, I love that hook on the stihl too I use it all the time when branches are stubborn and they won't come down! #teamstihl
I have the KM90R but I’m definitely going to upgrade to the 131R this season
Great video brother keep up the awesome work
We have the multi tool and about 6 attachments and we love it!
Drake Falkner stihl or echo?
Love my pas-2620.
I've used both Stahl and echo, all my equipment is Echo i have the pas 2620 with 6 different attachments and its awesome. I run a small landscape business and ny 2620 is one of my main tools . I do also have dedicated units but they don't see much use and I may be getting the echo battery attachment unit in the future for my residential areas where the houses are like 25 feet apart
Please do get the battery equipment. I've been woken up after a nightshift by the neighbor's lawn care guy several times already and it aint fun.
Does the echo tree trimmer attachment only work on that motor can it can go on a regular weed eater
I use a Echo 410U brush cutter with a carbide blade for working my way into a tree like that. Much faster but you need to be experienced at using it in that way. I too have recently bought the Kombi system. Seems to do the job thus far. Would have probably bought the Echo counterpart but no dealers close to where I live now.
I've had a lot less maintenance with the Echo products I've used, add in lower weight for Echos, and I think I've found the solution I need. Just need to keep the revs up on the two stroke, but once I'm running, I do "roger go with throttle up" to quote an astronaut right before the Challenger disaster.
I got the Echo w/2620 powerhead.I have
Stihl chainsaws though.
Actually a fan of both products.
Just ordered the echo pas 2620 so stoked lol got the weed whip and the hedge trimmers
I am 6 ft 5 inches .I like the Kombi system. When using the trimmer the shaft is longer. So it’s better for my back.
Greetings from the mountains of NE California.
I have been an arborist since the '80s. It was interesting to see you begin these blue spruces. I have a coast redwood to do this for. It is called raising the skirt. And the configuration of my redwood is very similar to your blue spruces in this case.
I have one of the old Power Pruners, purchased in 1996. So it's interesting to see how far they have come. Mine had a power head/oiler problem. A very good and helpful Echo dealer in Redding, California got me all fixed up for a friendly price.
As I am new to this channel I want to ask, is either one of you an arborist? If you are then you know the branch stubs on this spruce must be dealt with. I do know you were going in with a chain saw after this video.
If you are not arborists I wish to earnestly recommend finding out about Dr Shigo's 3 step cut for branches larger than most that we saw you cut. And more importantly, where to cut a branch anyway. Easily found online.
Dr Alex Shigo.
Also "arborist Blair Glenn" right here on CZcams. A good pro with a good presentation.
Enjoy!
Every time i look you have more and more subscribers. Good for you man. Hard work pays off
Thanks pal
Echo all the way i like stihl but the unit with the pole saw can get heavy after a while man tbh
@Ace Repair ima echo guy i used stihl for a min it got its flaws to
I have been a fan of Stihl for a long time but in my experience their quality is going down hill. I recently purchased the pole pruner for my Frankenstein kombi system (250r engine) and was surprised to find out the gearbox on the saw is all plastic, which is a concern but time will tell.
Man i bought the same one with the dumb little micro mini chain and returned it the next day. How did yours work out? Do you recommend it?
@@mesomorph7 It's been fine so far, but I'm not a tree service. I mainly use it for trimming low branches on customers properties
China
Nice job
I have the Stihl Kombi system. 2 different power heads, but I use the Stihl Ht 133 pole saw over the kombi system.
Why you use the 133 more?
Love the talk about safety, so important. Great video guys. Both offer their own benefits for sure.
Echo needs to offer a bigger power head for their PAS System. This is the biggest cc offered by both brands.
Yeah they talk about safely and then one reaches in to remove the branches whilst the other is still standing there saw in hand. If you think that is safe then you haven't been around when someone has accidently turned with one of those.
That Echo kicked ass. That’s the one I’m going with. Higher revs and easier to control.
36.3cc on the Sthil vs Echo's 25.4cc. Not a fair comparison. Of course the Sthil will have more power!
Dillon Solanki yah I agree. The Stihl also sounds like an overpriced fart cannon to me. This kid doesn’t seem to understand warming up the Echo is required and it also seemed to do a much better job cutting once warmed up than the Stihl. They are still probably both great machines but I will stick with Echo.
ILoveSpeed716 no it didn’t are you crazy. The engine head on the stihl is much stronger than the 2620 head from Echo. Look at the facts, a Echo 2620 head will NEVER OUTPERFORM a Stihl 131r. Now if Echo had a 3020 engine head it would be a fair comparison. Take your head out your ass a smell the coffee
CLEAN CUTZ you’re high. When your fart cannon is too busy farting the Echo is making real RPMs cutting just as fast. Then while your adjusting your valves the Echo is still making money. All kidding aside I would hope that an extra 11cc bump would give it an edge in power but in this video it was not evident. Once the Echo warmed up (they are very cold blooded) it was cutting easily as fast. I know because I just bought one. Watch the video again and notice it was still warming up till his last few cuts.
@@Brian-Outdoors Pretty sure that the main difference would be how sharp the chain is and not the power of the engine.
@@Ben-fk9ey Can't argue that.
I was told the Stihl has a lot more moving parts, runs hotter and thus is in the shop alot more often. I've known Stihl to often have complications at my job. However you get max power of Stihl which makes short work of even the toughest jobs. I bought the little Echo Pas/hand blower from home depot back in 2011 and they're both STILL running after only 2 tune ups!
It basically comes down to Mercedes Benz (Stihl) Power VS. Honda (Echo) Reliability
I have the stihl kombi but mine is the smaller 91r. I have the pole saw, articulating hedge trimmer, weed trimmer, and blower. Every one of the attachments has been used and has been worth what I paid for them. My father has the echo and its nice but I think the low end torque of the stihl is easier on the hands than the 2 stroke running at max rpm. I find I hardly use full thottle on my stihl. Its stihl for me.
Have an Echo Pas 225. Would it be too under-powered for the pole saw attach.?
I don’t think it would be an issue. If they make it then why wouldn’t it take it!
Brian, Cary here (in Lexington, NC). I am new to the professional side of lawn care (but have been an AVID lawn care psycho for decades now!) and I really appreciate your Channel. Lots of good info that is fair and balanced with each guy giving his professional opinion (in this case, just one guy.....but your "Best XYZ for 202X" videos have several guys.). I am a fan of Echo and have the PAS-2620 and five of the attachments. L*O*V*E them. Do not have any experience with the others (Stihl or otherwise) but am VERY happy with Echo so far. Ironically, I do not have the Power Pruner attachment (not yet, anyway). Keep on, keeping on, man! Thank you for all of the info that you put out there.
Run a Stihl 131R Kombi. Can say enough good things
i used my km130r for trimming trees plus i even felling trees with it its that powerful and plus done some demolation and carpentry work
I have the echo and it's quite good. The old red Shindaiwa's were the best to run. Started better plus lighter
I'm an echo guy and I just bought the 3' extension pole and the power pruner. Just another tool to add to the trailer. Good video 😎👍
Could u use 2 3ft extensions ?
@@brandonmurphy4657 maybe if you are using echo x series.
@@teamknight3682 I'm buying the 2620 and the power pruner . I didn't know if it's worth buying 2 extensions for it
@@brandonmurphy4657 I would start with 1 extension and you can always buy a second if needed. I think you may have some issues with stability with the length.
Seems to me that the echo has more power
I have the 131r kombi and most of the attachments, it’s never lacked power. But considering getting a lighter duty power head for string trimming, she gets heavy after awhile.
I'm new to having my own landscaping business, I work by myself & only have a dozen customers but need an upgrade to do the jobs I'm getting now. I'm torn between the Stihl KM 94R or the Echo PAS-2620. Both cost about the same at $320, with the Echo being 1.3cc larger & a pound heavier. The only attachments I'll be buying for now are the straight hedge trimmer, pole saw & string trimmer (which I'll change to Shakespear Push N Load Trimmer Head). I'm not very strong so I'm leaning more towards the Sithl which is lighter & more people carry them here as opposed to Eco. What are y'alls thoughts on what I should get?
We run ECHO trimmers but the Kombi 131 from STIHL is overall mow powerful.
excellent
KM94 R lightweight and plenty of power adjust the low and high and youre set
Stihl is a bit more expensive and noticeably louder than other brands, but its all i use. So reliable.
Brian I respect the fact you brought up chainsaw gear safety..ppl take these powerful machines for granted.. while purchasing from HL 94K trimmer from the dealer I cut my finger checking on the blades. That one time I didn't wear my gloves I got bit.
Safety is incredibly important!
Cant say enough good things about my pas280 and attachments.
The Echo seemed to hold its own in your video ... and got thru those branches just as fast as the Stihl... We used Echo combi systems here in Pa and are quite happy with their performance and quality. Price I would say is appropriate for what they are.
Curious, I'm wondering, do you guys use non-ethanol fuel? I have a couple 2 strokes and have always used normal gas, but was wondering what you guys use.
Shindaiwa! 😀
LOL I have a shindaiwa that I professionally for years from 1982 and I just broke a part in the starter! It's banged up and still goes but now I'm looking at one of these for the taller hedges and pole chainsaw
I Have The Kombi KM131R. It’s A Beast!!! The Only Question Or Issue I Have It’s With The Chain Saw. It’s Brand New And I Tried Using It But The Chain Won’t Engage. 🤷🏻♂️ Any Body Got A Clue?
On this review, which are good demonstrations of the Echo & Stihl Pole Saws. Was the saws sent to you for free by the Vendors or was both saws purchased.
Stihl all day! The local dealership has always been good to me. Either when something needs to fixed or questions on products. We have Echo at Ace Hardware but long story short they don't have the best customer service in my town. I am going to be upgrading to the multi tool system from Stihl next year! Looking forward to trying it out!!!!
Stihl system seems to be a more durable field serviceable system for me.
Echo all the way, stihl is great, but gets heavy after a while, Echo very light, and gets the job done fast
Brian you should demo a shindaiwa eb854 back pack blower
Well see!
Echo 100%
Is the sthil 4 stroke?
I believe it's 4-mix.
Brian, how about dixie chopper demo next year
Jon Smith Just might happen!
Have you guys ever reviewed the Echo 225? I'm hoping I can get by on it for a while.
We haven’t but ECHO always makes solid product
I can only compare string trimmers. I have an Echo SRM225, and a Stihl FS91R. The weight advantage goes to Echo. Been running it for 15 years, just changing air and fuel filters. Going on 6 years with the Stihl. The Stihl carb is touchy, but if you can get it tuned just right, it's a nice package. I tune the Stihl carb twice each season, once on spring startup, then again after the first tank of fuel has cleaned the fuel passages. The weight difference on the powerheads is due to Echo is a two stroke, Stihl is a four stroke. The four stroke has a much larger head, plus the valve train. Torque comes on at lower revs with the four stroke. Need to mix fuel and oil with both.
Afterthought: you asked if you can get by with the 225 for a while. Short answer, yes, but if you get into power hungry situations, you will want to upgrade soon to the 2620, or better still to the 280. If they ever produce a 300, I'll upgrade to that.
Imressive how both saws were able to cut right through those dry spruce twigs without hesitation.
Good work! #Hesastud lol
How was the GIE??
Aiden Sabo tons of fun! Fun videos to come!
Ok cool
try the honda VersAttach!
But I like dedicated polesaws much better than attachments.
Can you add on extra poles with the dedicated ?
MEADE LAWN CARE SUPERMAN no there telescoping. They are a lot stronger
@@calebgeddens8318 ok awesome didnt know that 👍
No doubt, they're better in durability and function. As one who only uses one occasionally, the Kombi system is fine.
Me too 😢 we can't have it all. I wish the attatchments were as sturdy and reliable as the dedicated tools
What's a ballpark price for trimming up the bottom of a tree like that?
Hairston Property Management That’s a good question it was Brandon’s job, not sure. Maybe someone can leave some suggestions etc
If you are a landscaper probably $125 to $150 a piece, as a Tree service I could get $200 a piece or at least $400 an hour on the property. doing minor stuff for anything larger at least $500 per hour, Hope this helps! Doing tree work the baseline is around 250 per hour. In my area anyway
@@gabemalcolm4429 where do you live?
Give them a highball price per tree with a haul away and then offer to "work something out" if you can slice up the branches into garbage can sized pieces for them, in a pile that you leave there for them to throw away week by week.
I'd take the echo I have a pas225 sb if I have to buy a multi function tool I will take the 2620 echo
Echo all the way
If you know how to use the pole saw you know you don't stand underneath what you are cutting. I've never had to use face shields or protective gear not because I'm stupid but because I cut away from the limbs and off to the side. If I have to deal with tricky limbs that could swing into me or into breakable objects I tie a rope around the limbs to be cut and use the tree as a hoist to hold the limbs until I can lower it. I'm not saying to not use protective gear, however use good judgment and control methods to aide you. I do wear protective gear when using the brush saw because rocks and other objects can get slinged back at you or ricochet off trees or whatever and come back at you. I recently upped my pas 225 to the pas 2620 and it works nice with the echo pole saw attachment.
Like them both. Stihl has more power but the 4 mix has been hit and miss reliably wise. Echo isn’t perfect but from what I’ve seen it will outlive the Stihl.
ECHO DOES outlive Stihl. They are SO low maintenance. But the tension screw on the power pruner (pole saw) attatchment is so mickey mouse. I broke 2 already
I like the two stroke better because they turn more rpms.
Used em both but sthil has plenty of tourqe
which is a better bang for the buck system??? or are they both very close in performance and reliability. ? thanks for this... i also want the one with best hedge trimmer system... normally i had to use ladder with hand held hedge trimmer... time is money with lawn care...thanks
I prefer my STIHL Kombi over the ECHO personally.
@@BriansLawnMaintenance i have echo and stihl dealers close... i will see which system seems best for me... i retired from lawncare over 20 years ago... Now i think i am just going to get a nice little setup and do a lot of pruning, hedges, stump removal cleanups and pick up some descent yards close to me... thanks
i am a echo man i like the older gray echoes
If you're talking safety then walk up and grab a branch the guy is pulling back. One stumble and .. stay back! or get one of those fish hooks from Academe various lengths..
As Brandon said before the echo has a hard time starting up where as the sthil is ready on a cold start!
Bring something to set the chainsaw end down on, so you don't get dirt on your chain.
Ive got the PAS-280 (28.1cc) with 10" chain saw (a bit more power then PAS260) it works extremely good. Also have Ryobi Power head with 8" chain saw, it works OK (MUCH BETTER THAN NONE) - not as much power and not a solid feel to extension bar. oILERS On none of them are reliable.
You have to adj the valves
On the stihl
Stihl is the best for me.. Had echo and it didn't hold up to stihl!
Of course the Stihl has more power, it's like 10cc more than the echo. The top of the line versus the mid level is not apples to apples. The PAS 280 is the closest option.
They don't really sell the 280 anymore sadly
Yea, that is what I'm finding. I'm really interested in the Echo PAS but the displacement just isn't there. The 91R has more cc than the 2620.
Stihl before I even watch the vid.
