- After long consideration i decided to give this huge live horsefly tomy Pheidole pallidula bigheaded ants. They managed it well and won the battle with ease.
Kaalusin pikalt, kuid lõpuks ikka otsustasin anda elusalt oma Pheidole pallidula suurpea sipelgatele selle hiiglasliku veiseparmu. Sipelgad said lahingus megahästi hakkama.
This wasn't a battle, this was an execution

@@SilenceStabber I've been bit by horse fly once, it hurt worse than a mosquito bite. At least mosquitos try not to hurt you when they suck your blood to avoid detection, Horse flies don't give a fuck and just tear open your skin. Those fuckers suck. I have no love for that species.

They do that to try to slowly rip off the limbs of their prey, as the horsefly is very large even for warrior ants use this tactic seems slow and it is but gradually rip off the limbs.

There is a difference though between natural environment and confined "killing space" we are seeing here. Without walls and ceiling horse fly most likely would be able to fly away after encounter with first few ant scouts before all nearby ants will become aware about "huge meal" here. Obviously it depends - if horse fly will land near ant nest then it most likely will be incapacitated and killed in next seconds.
You are correct, in nature this kind of scenario with this huge size difference is unlikely. I feed them daily, a lot, about 5 meal-worms or couple of crickets per day, and i always prekill and boil the insects. But i have to say, pheidole ants are vicious, they attack in milliseconds, and have a strong grip (regular fly cannot escape grip of 1..2 ants). I have 8 colonies of different nts, and we call pheidoles "crazy ants".
