- In this third episode of our RAILROAD JEOPARDY! series, the train nerd friend Leighton creates the question and puts me in the running as a contestant! He came up with some brilliantly hilarious categories that had us all dying with laughter. We are also once again joined by @Admiral_Ellis , make sure you check his channel out!

The trains needing a binky bit, i like to die laughing.
"Train goes gadunk gadunk gadunk gadunk" sounds like the train is about to fall apart at any speed.
Yep
@11:19 from an airline defect report: “noise under console, sounds like midgets with hammers” solution: “took hammers from midgets”
From a maritime perspective we have some good ones too. "#2, 3" pump sounds like my ex-wife" "boat wants to twerk beyond 850rpm"
Just wanna say I love the whistle bleeps. More comedic than I expected it would be.
Excessive volume, for me? The 10 levels of how something railroad works are the kind of videos I watch to wind down at night, because they're interesting enough to hold my attention so my mind doesn't race and they're calm and even enough to let me spool down. I get good and asleep, CZcams autoplays this video and there's train whistles.
But steam powered trebuchets are the fastest way to deliver cargo.
Air mail
Or would it be steam mail
@@Kraigthecanadian It's P in a cup mail.
@@MegaLokopo kanosha mail
@@KraigthecanadianKenosha mail it is.
How hard would aiming be?
Hmmm, a lot of "That'll be a piss test" I suspect would be kAn and Hyce on the ES&D :D
Was not expecting childhood cartoon references from Hyce, but man they were great 🤣
Absolutely hilarious. I'd like grandpa Leighton to host Jeopardy often. Keep up the good work at the museum; see ya'll next time I'm out that way!
Just as an aside. If you're including oil headlamps/lights, the Leek and Manifold light railway had fairly sizable ones on their locomotives. Though I did read one account that stated they never once lit them.
The first minute is the best. Calling it.
Edit: First 40 mins. Ya sure ya ain't drunk?
Dafaq is a UNCOUTHED JABRONI????!?!!?!?!?
Uncouth = A yob, someone who lacks manners and has a rather boisterous demeanour
Jabroni = An annoying idiot.
3:08 All that, and you skipped over the best part:
"Defect Level: 9
Smelly"
Passing the drug test means getting positive tests for every drug and not dying right?
@35:38 - I believe the rule is worded "half range of vision *not to exceed* 10MPH". It used to be "half the range of vision *or* 10 MPH" but that got abused as being "10 MPH" for all occasions and they had to re-write it because of course. 😂
depends on your rulebook, but I think that's the current GCOR yeah :P
28:29 to be fair, locomotives such as Jones and Lachlan Steel number 58 just didn't have brakes. Like, they were not fitted with a braking system. Or a coal bunker, for that matter. They just had piles of coal in certain areas, where the fireman could grab some to top up the fire.
Every LNER Steam engine from Edward Thompson through his successor Arthur Peppercorn had electric lights. And there were 2 British engines to have headlights when in the US before Flying Scotsman’s 1969 USA Tour. Those were the LMS Patriot Class “King’s Dragoon Guardsman” (I forget the number) in 1927 and another LMS engine Coronation Class 4-6-2 Pacific type #6229 “Duchess of Hamilton” disguised as #6220 “Coronation” for the 1939 New York Worlds Fair.
I like how the quality kept going back and forth between 720p and 144p, yet everything remained somewhat legible. impressive.
Discord streams... Yeah it was a touch odd
The whistle censors always break me 🤣

"Some uncouth jabronie" has me fucking dying. 😂
It's appropriately pronounce "Mis-sah-bee"
I love the dynamic between informative railroad trivia and chaos
I knew Alan Pegler in his later years - he inherited a fortune from his dad, in a Porcelain Empire (yes, he made his money in the toilet...) and both bought Flying Scotsman and the Ffestiniog Railway (my involvement). Never had anything to do with the Beatles. When he went bankrupt after taking 4472 to the states he played his way back to the UK as King Henry VIII on cruise ships.
Ah good. Chaotic railroad jeopardy! The timing couldn't be better since I just passed my QSOC rules qualification yesterday.
We in Minnesota pronounce Missabe with the eee sound at the end so there you go in the local dialect.
21:06 you’re thinking of another famous British rail enthusiast who owned The Flying Scotsman at one point in its life: Pete Waterman
The vast amount of knowledge here just astounds me.
Today's a good day when Hyce uploads
big Bertha's lamp eventually ended up on a standard 9f after Bertha was scrapped :)

Really had a blast listening to you guys. OMG. Thank you for your knowledge and having a sense of humor 🤬🤬More please. Thank you
A minute in and I can already tell this is going to be amazing!
20:35 fun fact, the reason scotsman went to Australia was because both Mallard or Sir Nigel Gresley (4498) were unavailable
*unavailable

16:40 it's Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly. R.U.D.
Yay! Chaos right off the bat! :)

16:50 Very funny, Brett!
Rapid kinetic disassembly... I gotta remember that one...

amusing to see the values listed as loco numbers
For 6:00 I thought it was Duchess Of Hamilton. I remember seeing a picture of that engine somewhere on the Baltimore & Ohio.
26:40 sassy Hyce intensifies lol
@32:20 I knew that only because I immediately realized it was designed to allow Steam operations over Yard Limits territory without a lot of fuss.
I am just dying after seeing 2:41. HOW DO YOU HAVE THIS?!??!?? This is hilarious!
Also, what card game?
I took a picture of that defect on a locomotive that came to my shop when I worked at BNSF. Lol
That's a question for @admiralellis
@@Hyce777 also, I have screwed us all. I have found three foot narrow gauge camelback, specifically an 0-4-0 and a 2-6-0.
6:02 flying Scotsman didn't have the headlight on for the entirety of it's USA trip.
Hi Hyce, so I've been watching your videos about stuff that is going to happen in Railroads online and it makes me very excited. However, I do have a question concerning when these new locomotives and cars will arrive. I know they will come out after the spline updates but now that you are going to incorporate Railroads from all over the world in different gages it makes me wonder when we will get these new locomotives and cars. Yes I like the idea of having more stuff to do in Railroads online with the different gages in all but for new it would be nice to have some new locomotives and cars to play with, especially the ones you have shown us all ready. In a nut shell, my question is what needs to happen before a new locomotive or car can be added to Railroads online and about how long can it take? Good luck on all your projects and train stuff!:)
Need to get the spline update finished and bug free, and then more cars and locos. :)
23:46 1. I saw the video of the Slim Princess blown cylinder on the right but I didn’t think Leighton was one of the people who was in the accident and 2. What happened between the 18 blast nozzle and the Eureka blower pipe? The only incident I know was the infamous fire of ‘99 when the engine got torch but was meticulously restored to operation.
18's blast nozzle i never heard about. Eureka's blower pipe was during the Victorian iron horse roundup. Nozzle fell off in the smokebox so they couldn't get a draft at all so when they lost pressure they were hosed.
@@Hyce777 oh no wait, I got a better question. On 33:38 what components is the “binky” are you referring about?
I've used the phrase "rapid, unscheduled disassembly" but I think I'll start using "sudden, unexpected, kinetic disassembly"
To add to the Blue Dumpster. Have you ever seen the working steam Thomas or heard how awful the ride in it is. I talked to the engineers during dowt at Strasburg and they told me to go home put every heater I can find on top of my washing machine throw a brick in it then stand on top of it for 8+ hours on heavy wash and that’s basically what running Thomas is like.
Sounds about accurate to me.
I don’t know much about steam locomotives but I know what a crown sheet is
I actually had no clue McGowan was buried in/ near Golden. ANOTHER REASON TO GO THERE
There's a video on trains magazine of the 18's cylinder failure.
we need another one
Wait where is the information about these southern pacific mikados blowing crown sheets multiple times? I want to look this up!
Hey Hyce have you heard about the Spirit of Steam for Train Sim World 2? It's Dovetail first time ever of doing steam locomotives but the steamers are UK based of the 2-8-0 8f and a 4-6-0 passenger engine which are both looks very cool
I haven't!
@@Hyce777 When it comes out as a DLC add-on at the end of May on the 31 but the cost to buy it is unknown yet I'm a steam lover but the diesels are ok too it's nice to have something else to do than driving a diesel locomotive all day I used to play Trainz 2009, 2010, and Trainz Sim 12 which had steam but the computer decided to give up it's life but the computer was a Windows 7 so it wasn't the best at proformins and the speakers kept dieing out within 30 minutes after logging. But I do miss driving to steam locomotives it's been a while since I driven one
@@Foxymorris9236 It is available for pre-order now at $35CAD. It is not Dovetail's first time doing steam, but it is the first time we will get steam in TSW2.
Great job everyone. ; }
We need a video talking about 484 and 483.
The steam locomotive that had the crown sheet was not that far from my house and I do know where when you come and railfan it in Gardners Pa
Duluth Missabe (Miss-ab-ey) & Iron Range! I'm a Duluthian, trust me, I know.
Uncouth jabroni I'm going to use that
TIMMY TURNER!!!!
Pan am? Isn't that being bought by csx? I remember talking with a pan am breakman about it while they were waiting for something or other, think the power was 510, not sure, but the engine sounded like it has a relief valve popping off to the tune of 2 time a second...but I'm meandering, the non point I was trying to make is I can watch them build propane trains from where the boat I run ties up on the Portsmouth/Newington line and I've never seen a train going down that line faster than 10mph which made all types of things click in my head
Here’s a category, name the heritage railroad put up a steamer and where it currently resides has to be named
It's not a piss test, it's a wizz quiz.
You should play more Mashanty
13:26 He is referring to SP 745
UNCOUTH JABRONY! :'D
Hyce I have an ideal of railroad 101 video where you explain GCOR General Core of Operating Rules and USOR US Operating Rules
i got a question I'm assuming steam boat coal shovels and steam train coal shovels were generally shaped differently. But what about a coal shovel off a steam boat ferry that was owned by the railroad to ship there steam trains across. Would the railroad just have the steam boat fireman use the shovels that was meant for the use on a train because easier to order one kind of shovel head and they would have an abundant of those heads.
Not sure about railroads, but I'm licensed in marine steam and in the days of hand fired coal the scoops (shovels) were sized to the boilers, but # 2 was a common size in the boiler rooms. In the coal bunkers where the trimmers worked (to keep the coal level to prevent shifting) they would use whatever they could get in there, and rakes as well.
Hyce what about a Railroad Jeopardy but with German Railroad Knowlage
Hyce, I've got a Jepordy Railroad question and you have to be exactly correct.
What Nation, Region and/or Continent Resembles Which of The Popular TV Series and Book Series of the Famous Reverent Wilbert Awdry, which includes the Director Brit Alicroft.
I'm Skye and I'll See you in the Skies. This Pups Gotta Fly
What is the island of Sodor?
Yes, and you get the ultimate winning champion if there were an actual Jepordy made just with Q&A meant for kids, and not just the main topic is about trains, but for anything.
but too bad Alex Trebek is long gone, we all wish he were still around, to keep his own Series going on towards the future.
But still, in that Children's Categorical Jepordy answer, you get 2.4 billion points, because everyone loves watching Thomas and Friends.
Anyway, I'm Skye and I'll See you in the Skies.
and another thing, if you compare the PAW Patrol Characters, well the Pups with the Steam Team of Sodor Their personalities are very similar, just to keep that in mind.
TTYL.
14:00 its "Missabee" not "Missab". As a Minnesotan who has spent a lot of time up in the Iron Range, I would know. If anyone disagrees they can fight me lol
Is Restricted speed different in the US to Canada?
Here reduced speed is "A speed that will permit stopping within one half the range of vision of equipment"
and Restricted is "A speed that will permit stopping within one-half the range of vision of equipment, also prepared to stop short of a switch not properly lined and in no case exceeding SLOW speed.
When moving at RESTRICTED speed, be on the lookout for broken rails.
When a broken rail is detected, the movement must be stopped immediately and must not resume until permission is received from the RTC or signalman."
Yeah that's a smidge different. We don't have reduced speed as a technical term to my knowledge. Restricted speed by some definitions also means be ready to stop short of other trains, derails, switches, etc.
@@Hyce777 Ah. The derails thing is sort of implied in Restricted for us. Reduced speed exists to basically allow us to operate without the extra caution while still being on the look out for equipment (equipment, by our definition is any cars and/or locomotives that can be handled on their own wheels in a movement.) But without a speed restriction. Theoretically a speed that will permit stopping within one half the range of vision could be any speed if visibility is good enough. Restricted only really exists in CTC when you have a pass stop authority or are entering between signals.
hay there hyce i love your videos and i know its not your real job, but i got a question can we make are our railroad logo on railroads online.
Nah it's a bit complicated for that
Hyce if you listen to pod casts i would suggest listine to "well theres your problem" its a podcast about engineering disasters with slidesbthey do a podcast and accomping youtube video about about engineering disasters(go figure) but they have done a a few that you might find interesting such as episode 7 witch on the lac-megantic train derailment and subsequent explosion, and episode 17 wit h is on the concept of the atmospheric railway when they find out that the first train to reach 100mph is actually just the locomotive (well the equivalent of the locomotive) decoupling from the rest of the train and rocking off in to the distance with a terrified Scottish guy holding on for dear life. But be warend that most episodes are an hour plus and quite often over 2 hours.
The armored trains episode is spectacular and a great first listen.
So the spline update going into railroads online next Friday since it said may 20th
Construction tools beta only on the beta branch. Not the spline update.
@@Hyce777 so is the spline update coming up next month

Why is it a worse problem if the fusible plugs start leaking, then stop leaking, then start leaking again? How does that happen and what does it mean?
That means either the plug or the sheet are changing geometry which either way is no bueno.
@@Hyce777 Ok, but how does that make the leak come and go?
This is my Jeopardy question: This railway, at least in terms of lettering, looks somewhat similar to the UK railway of the same name.

In my opinion the train horns should be a bit less loud. They are kind of annoying.

I mostly find it to be a bit annoying as I listen to your videos while playing games, and the loud constant sound of the whistle really stands out.
@@Hyce777 the whistle is funny though. Idk why, however yes, less loud, I'm being jumpscared by it now.
There's one Southern Makoto and Hyce doesn't know what the number of it is?.....It's Southern 4501. The Southern Makoto. Unless there's another Southern Railroad I Don't know of, There being any other than, there is only one Southern Railroad, and it was the Southern Railway.
I had to look up the number cause I confuse the 4501 with the 1401. mainly cause they both have the 01 and my uncle who used to manage the stock portfolio for Norfolk and Southern and previously Norfolk and Western used to have or still has both of the 4501 and the 1401 locomotive telephones in his office. Both gifted to him by the Company. One was also tied to a direct private line to the Railroad and the other sat on his display self in his office.
I have a Railroads Online question, Will there be a female character model? It does make sense to have one if your a girl.
TBD, we've gotten that suggestion, need to sort out more characters in general :)
Lol
So is his name Hyce or mark? And if it’s Mark then where did the name Hyce come from?
