RAILROAD JEOPARDY with non-railroad people! How hard could it be...

- In this video, I challenged Mickely, K10wN, and Tristan to a game of Railroad Jeopardy! where I came up with all the questions. These three gents are big fans of RO!, and know how to lay track (well except Tristan) quite well, but are not necessarily railroaders or railroad experts - so I tried to have a mix of easy questions, and "educational" questions.
It went worse than anticipated. - Hry
This, ah, this was definitely a thing that happened 😂
Suggestion: the difficult part of the answer should be in the question. Eg: "The hydrostatic lubricator uses these two substances to lubricate the locomotive." "A: What is steam and oil." This makes it so that the knowledge is required, but the answer itself is simple.
That's probably a smarter way to write questions, for sure. Good tip!
Ok time to watch through see how many questions everyone got wrong to tally their negative points.
Maybe Mickely is secretly a time traveler and is trying to warn us of the upcoming war between the Cumbres and Toltec and the Durango and Silverton for trackage rights to the old right-of-way between them
I would watch that post-apocalyptic movie series.
Royal Gorge Railroad War 2: Alaskan Diesel Boogaloo
this makes me feel so much better about my knowledge on trains lol
Dude's just got an entire Maintenance of Way crew at his disposal.
This is an excelent demonstration of how easy it is to loose track of what "common knowledge" is when you're deep into a subject haha
I now understand those times when my grandparents where yelling answers at the tv while watching jeopardy
Definitely want to see more of this, it'd be interesting to see how well Farma would do at something that isn't breaking the game lol
Never heard of a cembre. On the Milwaukee Road and Rock Island, both, we called 'em "chicken heads". They were driven into tapered holes.
Bungalow is usually associated with someplace little and cozy that you might want to vacation in. You have described a metal building full of equipment :)
Well it's little and cozy warm from all of the equipment lol
Make this a series. Like, an actual series that has episodes. I need that.
there's 2 more that are filmed :)
@@Hyce777 YEEEEEESSSSSS GIMME JIMMY! (Ik ur name is Mark but that don't rhyme with jimmy)
This was amazing! Sounds like its time for a 10 levels of basic railroading!
Interesting, I'm not American nor familiar with steam engines... so I knew almost nothing except for a couple. BUT, we also use Cembre connections over in Europe so it would have been my guess. It's a surprise you guys use this system as well. Note that Cembre is a brand name of the Italian company, but almost everyone uses the name to mean to those Electrical Rail Contacts.
Yeah, someone noted that in episode 2 (filmed but not aired) and I had -no idea- it was not just the term for the connection. We refer to them by that name in our design standards... lol!
Well, Cembre made those contacts I believe. It is somewhat like velcro, kleenex, hoover... in that it is somewhat genericised, in this case within the rail industry.
great attempt guys, it sucked excellently! keep up the good work. this is in no way derogatory.
fun fact, in the UK, signal bungalows are called signal boxes
This is fun, helped me remember all the times you talked about everything in all your videos, especially the Hydrostatic Valve used differently in Derail Valley
This was surprisingly fun and educational to watch! Please do this again some time.
Loved it. I love how some terms are stupid obvious like washout plug and then others are esoteric like signal bungalow. Look forward to more 'educational' content.
12:10 Wow, i actually knew what this is. We have a similar lubricator on our small industrial locomotive Nr. 2 "Emma". Though ours looks more like a binocular because Emma has no air compressor.
They make several different numbers of bullseye's. most of our stuff has the 3 feed, I've seen 1, 2, 3, and 5 feeds myself.
@@Hyce777 Oh god. Setting up the flow rate on 2 is hard enough, I don´t wanna be dealing with 5.
We have to subtracts points from Hyce! It isn't Kenosha...
The correct answer to that one is "what is the ES & D" and you omitted the "frequent derailings" :D
this is the earliest i have ever been to any video (excluding streams) :)
WE NEED A PETITION TO MAKE HYCE THE NEW ALEX OF JEPARDY
That was "Train" Crazy. Looking forward to seeing something like this again. ; )
But remember, Tristan don't want to be associated with being an engineer!
Haven't you played C&C (Command and Conquer) games? The life of an engineer is everything but glamourous, you buy him for 500 dollars, stuff him an APC, drive him to the enemy base and force him to enter their building.
From there the engineer either damages the building and dies, or he changes the exterior paint of the building and then dies... :D
I loved this. funny and amazing.
This needs to be a series
22:31 "it looks like a bannana" got me laughing so hard 🤣 (also because i knew which part you were talking about)
This could be a good Community Event, where people can enter a raffle to play
This was somewhat painful... My throat hurts from bellowing at the screen!
XD
The tube time was up on my furnace, and have just finished retubing it.
This is how it feels to descend into madness
i may be a fan of railroads in general yet i guess i don't know any history about it, well you learn something new everyday.
Thank you for providing me with an opportunity to scream answers to questions at my screen for almost an hour!
You guys should have invited me to play! 🤣🤣🤣
If I had real train enthusiasts on, the questions would've been harder :P
@@Hyce777 I say bring it on! Sounds like good content for those of us that are "real" train nerds!
I would love to do this
You guys actually succeeded, I'm sure Alex Trebek would be proud, but it's a shame that he's gone. R.I.P Alex Trebek you're teaching skills on TV were the most popular in history.
Hyce: *boiler FRA question*
Me, a Mechanical Engineering student graduating next fall: "wall/surface thickness?"
Hyce: "Its an engineering term"
Me: *brain travels back to sophomore year*
Me: *feels dumb*
6:40, not to be confused with the hombre connector
lol
Loved it 😊
I knew the washout plug one, I’ve seen an old video about cleaning and washing out a locomotive
I’m surprised I still remembered the hydrostatic lubricator
The hell they even made a movie about the Royal Gorge War called Denver and Rio Grande
Journals are bearings made with solid pieces of metal that have a low coefficient of friction with steel, such as bronze or babbitt (a lead alloy). This is a guess, but I would expect the ones on locomotives would be bronze. I love machining bronze, it's so purty.
We've got bronze or babbitt depending on the application
For the Cembre. Doesn’t drilling a hole in the rail hinder its load bearing capacity? Also what kind of insulation is used for the copper and steel, both for oxidation prevention and stopping the current from grounding?
a 1/2" hole in a ~10" tall rail doesn't do much. it would if we still has small rails. I'd have to follow up with the insulation, not sure off the top of my head.
Still need a lot of learn for this
I like K10wN, Mickley, and Tristian😂 such funny guys
The engineer that doesn't recognize a factor of safety hurts my brain XD
Fantastic idea I laughed 😉
I always said there should be blue collar Jeopardy.
sweet!
I think timken bearings on the Niagara's were tapered, if I'm reading these pdfs right...
Well this was a train wreck. Ba doom tish. Also, I feel dumber for not knowing most of the question. :( Still a hilarious video through.
so the next video going to be building a steam engine from scratch?
I dont know if you mentioned it but where did you learn things like cord structures and blues scales?
I mostly learned my scales from all-guitar-chords.net? I think it is. chords from when they were important to learn for a song mostly haha
"Easy" riiiiiigghhhtt
Is there a link to this lab?
I'm surprised you didn't have any questions of the style when was the war of 1812.
Cembre is fun to say. Cembreee
I only had a legit 100pts. Much fail!
I guessed it was a lubricator valve
What is the easiest way to make smooth, straight, and clean track to all of the industries? For me being a beginner.
Take a watch of K10wN's shed on CZcams. Bad at railroad trivia, the best at laying track in RO!.
What is his channel called?
@@lukewendorf6551 K10wN's shed.
in Jeopardy, you can go into negative territory
Yeah i didn't feel that mean hahaha
what program do you use man? i wanna use it!
Jeopardy labs.
I have a few questions for the Dev Q&A. first, will we be able to make 3 way switches with the new splines? and Second, will there be new cargo to haul around?
1. yes
2. later
@@Hyce777 Ok thanks
One of the questions isn’t really correct. What is a journal box? The part on a locomotive where the frame rests on the wheel sets and the axle receives lubrication. The question should actually be what is a driving box? Journal boxes are only on trucks where driving boxes are specific to locomotives. They are large brass boxes (similar in shape to rod brasses) that are held in the locomotive frame by a shoe and a wedge supported by a binder. The earlier designs were just for straight oil but later on certain locomotives were equipped with spring pad grease lubricators. Which are exactly what the name implies. That’s why some Southern Pacific locomotives had stars painted on the wheels to signify that they were outfitted with the sprung grease pads.
That's a fair nitpick, driver box would be more accurate. It does house a polished journal on the axle though :P
All our stuff is oil based with pads. We converted 491 from grease cellars primarily because we don't run long or hard enough to make the grease flow effectively at the museum.
hyce you need to make educational videos about railroads, locomotive controls, history, parts of a locomotive, how water, oil, fuel(coal and wood and oil is some steam engines uses it that way) reacts with other liquids/solids, etc.
I have made a few videos around that! Check out my Railroad 101 series. I will be adding more.
@@Hyce777 okay
PvP and Royal Gorge War confirmed?
Play again to see how much they remember but the questions are worded different.
Speaking of blowdown values, could we have them in Railroads online?
Eventually yes
@@Hyce777 cool! Looking forward to it!! Could you also update the locomotives so when you look at a value it says what it runs? Also how accurate are the cabs of the locomotives to the real thing?
Dies at 7:25 😂😂😂
now railroads online jeopardy
Do you have some where i can send pictures hyce?
Hyce#5069 on discord..
My takeaway: always keep ur engines ___ up, no matter what. 14:01
Wow
Again! Again!
This gives me pain. How am I getting these before y'all?
they aren't super railfans :P
@@Hyce777 there should be one of these with questions 300+ point level only
we have determined that i lack sufficient braincells to store locomotive information xD
Sort of played along and got 1400 points. Though I did answer for all people so.. Pretty good for an idiot though :)
Signalbox is actually correct, as in the UK that is what we refer to them as so unless you're removing international terms...
I did say in the beginning that it was *American* railroading jeopardy. But yes, if we were doing UK or international that'd be accurate.
@@Hyce777 It wouldn't be correct for the UK, a signal box is specifically a manned location where the signaller operates the signalling controls, the lineside structure would be called an REB, Relocatable Equipment Building, or a PER, Prefabricated Equipment Room, which is a more dated term. Alternatively, which you did mention, a relay room, but similarly is only part of a larger structure and generally made of brick.
@@Blufireuk Interesting! Thanks for the cool details. :)
33:05 BIGBOY CONFIRMED
*12:10* its the blower
no it isn't
18:50 BOILER BARREL
Hyce is it true: diesel electric locomotives are coming to railroads online
Yes eventually
@@Hyce777 by the way is your next video showing the spine update ingame or a modeling stream for locomotives that are going in railroads online
@@williamsexton970 we will see
so all the question are base on steam engines and no other kind of engines
like the video
what is locomotive
no really what is it
Needs to have a buzzer for wrong answers and the contestants should have unique buzzers to buzz in kind of like what QI does. Also enforce a time limit on giving answers to keep the game moving. Have a second round with double point values. Maybe make the answers more of a 6th grade level. Maybe the viewers could come up with some usable answers for the next one.
Hi
it's a boiler.... Don't use esoteric Technical terms. the Cylinder is the boiler. Boiler Barrel.... Hyce owes the audience 9000 points.
that's what everyone in the industry calls it.... sounds like minus 9000 points for you :P
@@Hyce777 ........ *face palm* Ah well it's a funny story as to why it's a thing. but no Railroader slang/marketing terms shouldn't be Technical terms.... Just no.... And 100% ties into the root of why Rail fans are called Foamers...... At least the old rail boys are still sticking it to the Corporate executives....
That was painful to watch.
