    I have a Weishi and I will say it's not that aggressive but what I know from my experience is at first it did take several passes the thing is the Weishi has a sweet spot angle and if you get it you can one pass it. I found out after getting more experience with it. This is the first time you used this razor and even though you are experienced that might be a factor. I just want everyone to know this is a great razor don't hesitate to buy it.

      I agree with you and not only is the fact he is using it for the first time and no experience with it, but more importantly is how he is holding it and how fast he is doing his shaving...if I shave and hold my razor like he did in this video my face would be reduced to Hamburger Helper!!

      John Smith Same here. I bought a long-handled 9306 for my first DE, and it's a decent razor that is still in occasional rotation. I've got to agree with GeoFatBoy in that it can often require a cleanup pass on my tough beard, so I hit those areas a little harder with an alum block to avoid irritation, but I still like the feel of my Weishi.

    I have a light beard growth and a Weishi cuts through it with ease, 3-4 day growth shaves is what i always put it through and i'm always happy with the results. I would recommend it as a beginner razor.

    The Weishi was my first safety razor (bought under the Van der Hagen relabel) and it's a good starter shaving tool, or if one has more sensitive skin it's also the one to go with. Finding the optimal angle is a bit tricky and it does require a sharp blade like a Feather, Kai, or PolSilver Super Iridium. I still have my Van der Weishi and its long-handled counterpart that I break out once in a while when I get bored using my Merkur 34c.

    Got one, since yesterday. Found one here in Hong Kong, at an old man's market booth. Ultra affordable, tried it yesterday for the first time. Very gently razor, needs some pressure and a few passes... it gave me a good close shave. I love this thing!
    Now I have the Parker shavette, and this Weishi DE razor... nice!

    Looking forward to getting mine (branded Van Der Hagen but still made by Weishi) tonight! It's my first time, so if I like it enough, I'll see about finding a more aggressive one online, but for now I wanted one I could pick up right away at a local store, and people recommend this one for beginners anyway.

    I find these TTO's seem to shave better if you use a shallower angle than a sharp one. These mild shavers are great for daily shaving where you're doing more of a maintenance shave. I have a Gillette Super Speed which is nicer than this Weishi. I like the Weishi's because they're a throw away you can take on vacation or give to someone along with some blades to see if they want to try out DE shaving. Great video and honest. This is a forgiving razor for a novice.

    First off, thanks for doing these videos. I am fairly new to wet shaving (I just recieved my Edwin Jagger DE89) and it has been really helpful to have your videos as a reference.
    I have two questions:
    Firstly, what are your favourite blades? Which one/s do you use or prefer?
    Secondly, what exactly is the difference between shaving cream and shaving soap?

    Hi Geo
    I love the fact that your response to my RAD actually encourages me to expand my collection! LOL!!
    I was struck by a recent comment on Mantic's blog from Diane Woods about how some (but not all!) modern products can actually improve the shaving experience - she quoted shave oil specifically - and was wondering if you had ever used oil? I've started to use it on my third pass and it works for me. But, as they say, "YMMV" (you know, it took me months to find out what that meant!)

  • @DHoagland
    @DHoagland Před 10 lety

    The Weichi looks like the Micro Touch One being pushed now except that it's gold colored. The handle has the same design. It seems to be the same as several other "brands" as well so i guess Weichi is the supplier for a lot of companies that sell entry level DE razors. I have one so I'm pretty sure about this. I grew up using Safety Razors and got one of these to get reacquainted with the technique. It is a good entry level razor. I'm moving up to the Edwin Jagger DB89L.

    I am brand new to wet shaving, but have watched tons of videos, most from you. After reading many reviews, I purchased a Weishi Nostalgic Long Handle razor and bought some Shaving Revolution Japanese blades. After just two shaves, I am getting ready to go back to my cartridge razor. Fortunately, I have not cut myself to pieces. However, the shaves are not very close, there are many trouble spots and lots of post-shave irritation (likely because I know I'm not getting the stubble down and keep hitting areas to get them smooth). Trouble spots include - right under the nose, just below the ear, outside of the mouth on either side.
    I am ready to give up on the Weishi. First, as in this review, it doesn't seem to shave cleanly. Second, the blade holder loosened several times during my shave. It was hard to hold onto this thing in a way that would not result in loosening the blade holder. Based on your recommendation, I just ordered the Muhle R89 and we'll see if that works better. I also have some different blades I can try. Aside from that, what would you suggest to change my results?

    • @Long-Ball-Larry
      @Long-Ball-Larry Před 2 lety

      How's it going shave-wise, Mike?
      I started with the Merkur 34c and the Mühle R89 and was quite disappointed when I got my first Weishi (rebranded as Jagen David), as it felt comparably harsh and was inefficient in reducing my beard. A few years later I took out the Weihi again and shaved with it for several weeks - et voila I had a BBS and it shaved very smoothly.
      I ordered another one, this time a real Weishi - little did I know that my older one was the one with an Aluminium handle (around 55g) and the newer one the full brass version, which was not only 10g heavier but also a bit more efficient.
      Nowadays the Weishi is my daily driver (I own 5 now). I even prefer it over my 70s Super Speed, which is a bit milder - like the Aluminium handled Jagen Weishi David.
      Currently I prefer Astra blue and BiC blades in my Weishi.
      The right angle and no pressure - like with any other DE - are key. Technique (and good prep) is king.

    Well done Geo! Yeah, definitely seems great for someone new to DE shaving or for someone who suffers from sensitive skin. Personally, for beginners, I would recommend the Weishi or a vintage Gillette, as their first DE razor. The Merkur HD was my first and it almost turned me off of DE shaving. The Gillette SS is what saved me. I never did like the symmetry of the Merkur safety bar (with the exception of the Progress and Slant).

    Sorry, my very first DE Safety Razor was a Weishi (standard short handle model) and I never had the problem of the razor leaving shaving cream on my face! Was yours somehow defective? I have since switched to the Merkur 34C (Long handle), The Merkur Futur, and a butterfly (hangar doors) type razor (forgot the name). The Weishi long handle? I am happy with them all, except that sometimes, the Futur gets very slippery! Nitrile gloves or an alum bar or ShamWow! tm hand towel solves that! I bought the Futur for its adjustability (1-6).

    ***** Having been a fan of your CZcams page (having watched many many of your excellent videos till now),I would like to ask if even in "twist to open" type DE razors such as this is,is possible for the blade not to be equally excess by both sides..At 2:31-2:35 - if I understood well- you say that there is the possibility even in these razors(DE "twist to open" type) The bar in the center where the blade should be placed can't prevent this annoying fact?

    Definitely not an aggressive razor at all. To be fair, I have only just started shaving with a safety razor but I've noticed a couple cons. This razor plugs up with hair really bad to the point of opening the mechanism to rinse the hair out, and the blade reveal wasn't exactly even. it still gave me a good shave, but took 4 passes to do so. I've ordered the 38c so I'm excited to compare them. The weishi will get retired to my travel bag when I get it I think!

    I bought a Jagen David B40 of Amazon UK which from researching online is just a rebranded Weishi. Heck it even looks identical to the one GeoFatBoy is reviewing here.
    I'm a beginner so overall I'm satisfied with it, especially compared to the cartridges I was using before. Agree that it isn't the closest and even after 2 or 3 passes I don't feel like all my face is fully smooth (there are still rough spots) but it's still more than enough to be presentable. I'll probably purchase a better quality razor soon like a Merkur once I build up my confidence more, though I don't want to start spending too much on this stuff otherwise it defeats the point of why I switched to DE from cartridges in the first place!!!!

    • @TheWilkReport
      @TheWilkReport Před 5 lety

      Yeah, beard and skin type do factor in when using a Weishi, but you also want to be sure you've gotten the genuine article and not a knock-off. I've found that the Weishi was designed for use with sharper blades such as Feather, Kai, and PolSilver Super Iridium. Anything duller and you won't get as good a shave as you want. My go-to remains the Merkur 34c, but I still use the Weishi once in a while if I'm using a Feather or Kai.

    The micro touch one looks just like that one. I only say that because that's the razor I have. I am totally looking to upgrade but for now that's what I have. I've been wet shaving for 2 months now and have a solid 3 pass technique. Any ideas? Thinking of a Parker. I like butterfly open. My beard isn't to heavy. I shave every two days when my stubble gets to long. Really hoping to get a good recommendation before buying

    I got a 3 piece safety razor from my grandfather's estate when he passed. I was in Jr. High, so this was about 25 years ago. I've always kept it, but only used it once when I first started shaving. I didn't really know what I was doing and didn't have enough experience to tell the difference between the save I got from that, and the regular disposables we had around the house. About a month ago I decided I wanted to try it again and got a fantastic shave. I haven't used anything else since. So now I'm looking to buy one for each of my 4 brothers, and my dad.
    One commentary, not exactly related to the subject of the video, but related to your shaving. I'm ambidextrous, and I tend to only do things to the half way point with each hand. When I eat, the food on the left half of my plate gets eaten with a fork in my left hand. Then I switch hands and eat the other half with my right hand. When I first started to write, I used to do the same thing with my pencil, switching over in the middle of the page. Now I just stick to which ever hand gets the pencil first. When I shave, I shave the left half of my face with my left hand, and the right with my right hand. When I saw you shaving across your face with your dominant hand, I thought to myself "What the heck is he doing?" Hahaha. I guess I'm just not used to seeing someone do that. It looks really odd to me, but let's be real about it, the way I do it is odd, not the other way around.

    This razor manufacturer rebrands the razors many times over. Weishi, Qshave and Microtouch one...etc. They are an OK mild razor for beginners and people with not-so-tough hair. Otherwise try some of the 2 or 3 piece razors. For an inexpensive smaller razor, I like the Qshave short handle classic travel razor. Just check the blade alignment and reveal...I got a bad one in those respects but the replacement is fine.

      If you want a 'BBS shave', you won't be able to get it with just a one pass shave by using a double-edge (even with the aggressive Mühle R41 (my favorite) or an iKon Tech), a single-edge or straight razor. Those advanced razors [not recommended for beginners], along with many DE razors, can provide a 'DFS shave' in one pass, but you need to shave at multiple angles to clear out your particular beard growth. The adjustable Merkur Progress or adjustable Rockwell 6C (available for pre-order) are two excellent razors that would be a good long-term shaving investment, since they can be set to shave as mild to as moderately aggressive as you can handle.

      The Weishi has a positive blade exposure (unlike i.e. Merkur), so use it with a light touch:

      shavelikegrandad.blogspot.com/2014/10/analysis-of-merkur-15c-open-comb-razor.html
      You might also want to "kork" your blade before shaving. Geo recently made a video about "korking".
      Also, I recommend not to use the sharpest blade with this razor - Feather, BiC or Astra blue are too much in this razor - at least for me. I think the Derby Premium (black) pairs really well with the Weishi (YMMV). So maybe try a blade sampler with this one as well.

    I don't really get the difference though.. I mean, the sharp end of the blades stick out. Great. Job well done. What's so different about the other blades? It's just a holder, right?.. that's how it looks for me. Again, I just started so I'm completely clueless. Whats' the difference?
    I bought this one cheap to figure out if it was something for me. I used to use Gillette Fusion and this safety blade shaving stuff is completely new to me. And the MingShi razor you guys talking about is actually the same razor usually bundled with Derby Blades on Amazon, hence it is also referred to as the Derby razor.
