- Onde Onde is a specialty of Chef Wan, and he is going to teach Anna Olson how to make this incredible coconut flaked dessert!

Recipe
Ingredients (Makes 20 balls)
200 g fresh grated coconut (substitute with dried coconut)
¼ tsp salt
1 pandan leaf (cut into 4 pieces)
250 g glutinous rice flour
250 ml water + 150 ml water
150 g gula melaka (palm sugar) - chopped
Directions
1. Steam grated coconut with ¼ tsp salt and pandan leaf for about 10 minutes, until soft and fragrant.
2. Prepare bowl and pour in the glutinous rice flour, water, food coloring (green/pandan) and mix well. Mash glutinous rice flour and 250 ml water, rubbing together to mix evenly. Mash flour and form the dough
3. Break off small knobs of dough, roll them into a ball, then press a dent into the middle. Fill the dent with 1 tsp gula melaka and seal it. Roll once again to form a ball. Form and boil onde-onde
4. Cook the klepon balls in boiling water until they float to the surface. Remove from heat, drain and set side. And some floating in the background

In indonesia, it is call klepon. Traditional food Indonesian. And onde onde is like a ball made of glutinous rice, greased with sesame seeds.

People should try this recipe. The texture is almost like mochi. Lots of Japanese expats in Malaysia love this dessert. You'll get the savoury taste from the coconut flakes first, but then the sugar palm filling will burst and gives sweet sensation. Such a perfect dessert

Kelantanese also call it onde² but sometimes we call it 'kue kekoh char', which literally means bite and burst dessert.
In Indonesia some say onde onde as well or (kue) klepon, but in nothernest of west part of Indonesia call it as buah malaka as well (I think, the term of buah malaka in My environment developed by nothern Malaysian, hmm)

Ohh in vietnam we called it “bánh trôi” . The only difference is that we don’t use pandan juice, just water. And we sprinkled sesame seeds on top. Maybe i will try the onde onde recipe soon

Thing is,this "onde-onde" in the video has different names in places.Malaysians,and almost all of Indonesia calls it "onde-onde" but people on Java calls it "Klepon".The Javanese version of Onde-Onde is quite similar to your description,no pandan but the sesame seeds are all over it and it's crispy.

In Indonesia we do have this kind of dessert, we called it klepon. I'd love to eat em, my favorite market dessert, the sensation when the palm sugar boom up in mouth, other hand, the onde2 is a different stuff which is glutinous flour with mashed mung bean inside, and sprinkle of sesame seed outside then fry em up. So chewy

Omg I’ve been looking for sth like this I’m not sure, but I was in China town in Malaysia and I ate market sweet sth like this one but it was long folded, hot and creamy brown inside. It wasn’t ball shaped lol , but if wonder if this is the same one that I ate there? It was sooo gooood.

and the actual correct name for it is ‘Jian Dui’ which itself originated from China. Interesting how the same dish gets their own name variants.

In Sumatra we called this Onde-onde too. Sumatra and Malaysia have a closed connection, we came from same root (Melayu). We had many things in common.

So many comments regarding onde2 and klepon so I’ve did some research and summarises the names. They all refer to the same dessert
Klepon (Java island)
Onde2 (Central/South Malaysia, Sumatera)
Unday2 (Southern Philippine)
Buah melaka (Northern Malaysia)
Indonesian’s onde-onde is generally fried sesame balls in mung bean paste and we call it ‘Kuih bom’ in Malay here in Malaysia. The Chinese community calls it by its original name, ‘煎堆’ Jian Dui. This originated in China and is not from South East Asia.
In the Eastcoast of Malay Peninsular especially Kelantanese Malay and Terengganu Malay, and also Patani in Thailand, we also called Onde-Onde as " Kueh Kekoh Ca' " besides Onde² or Buah Melaka.

When I first learnt to make ones indeed in school, we used boiled and mashed sweet potato to make the dough, instead of glutinous rice flour. It’s probably a Peranakan recipe using sweet potatoes.

I love pandan, the flavor and the fragrance 🤗 brings me back to my childhood vacays to the Philippines.
I made this kuih every year during fasting month & never buy it anymore. It's easy to make. Sometimes, I replace pandan juice with blue pea flower juice or add pumpkin in it. Yummy 😋

@@BubsyMupsy i hope this reply is not too late but no it won't be too sweet, if u manage to get ur hand on some good palm sugar, the sweetness is not like normal white sugar, a mix of salty and sweet. and also, the dough is only glutinous rice flour and water (or pandan leave juice, if u can get it at ur area), so it should be the right amount of sweetness there.

Indonesian’s onde-onde based on your description is called ‘kuih bom’ or 煎堆 (jian dui) in Mandarin here in Malaysia! I always thought this was a South East Asian snack, but I just found out that Jian Dui is actually originated from China. We also have peanut and red bean paste fillings. I used to ‘shake’ the balls to guess which one has the peanut filling when I was young haha

@@khairulanwar9313 If I'm not mistaken, the Acehnese pekasam is our Malay tempoyak. Indonesia is big, so there are a lot varying names for things. Modern-day general terms are often a result of the recent influence of one or two cultures. For example, the term kasur, meaning bed, wasn't really used in Medan. The Malays and Bataks of Medan have historically used tilam instead of that Dutch loan word. Butuh, meaning need, is another recent influence from Sundanese/Betawi Malay. In the 30s/40s, Sumatran teachers vehemently opposed its usage in Indonesian. Who the heck wants to teach their students to swear? But it became ingrained in the language because of Java (As in the political will of the island's peoples).

We have this in Thailand too! It’s called kanom ko in southern Thailand. There’s also another variation in the central part of the country but the filling is shredded coconut with palm sugar cooked together and rolled into balls which is called kanom tom.

In Malaysia, people call it "Onde Onde". But in Indonesia, in general, we call it "kelepon". However, in West Sumatra, they call it "Onde Onde" like in Malaysia.
Wikipedia "Onde-onde" said, "In Indonesia, onde-onde are round, brown in color and covered with sesame seeds. Inside is green bean powder or black sticky rice. Whereas in Padang the onde-onde is served in a round shape, green, chewy, sprinkled with coconut, and inside is liquid brown sugar".
I my opinion, Malaysians call onde-onde the same as Sumatran people, cuz they're both ethnic Malays. In Indonesia, the food covered with sesame is onde-onde, and the food covered with coconut, inside is liquid brown sugar in some areas has different names (ex: in Java and Bali it's called klepon).
