Beckham was Ballon d'or runner up in '99, and FIFA World Player Of The Year runner up twice ('99, '01)...and people are arguing that he WASN'T world class! 🤔
I was only 2 in 99 and from what I’ve heard from older family members, and general older fans in football, beckham should have won it in 99 but was robbed as I’ve heard.
@@TheJWRBhe was robbed guy was insane
What gets lost sometimes with Beckham is he turned into a leader on the pitch, garnered the respect of his team mates with his ferocious desire to win and the work rate to back it up on match days and on the training ground. He dragged teams through games and was just a winner from the moment he kicked a ball.
You can’t teach these things it’s part of your makeup, experience and personality.
Not only was David Beckham World Class, he was well ahead of his time
Not sure about him being ahead of his time. He was definitely world-class at the time.
@@biggy3rd He played like a today's era player about 15-20 years ago he was ahead of his time he used to graft every game and his technical levels were way ahead of time
It's very very simple. World Class means you're good enough to play in any team in the world. End of. And he did! Now that is the end of the debate but if you really don't get it, here's some extra proof if needed. He was the best in the world at crossing a ball and taking free kicks, so much so he had a movie named after his trademark technique. He had iconic matches, and scored iconic goals, one of which got England to a World Cup, he played 115 times for his country, and captained them 59 times. He won league titles in FOUR countries. There's more but if you still think David Beckham wasn't world class... you're a twit.
As someone who used to watch them every week Beckham was one of the first names on the team sheet in that Galacticos era Madrid team. He didnt look out of place with the likes of Zidane, Carlos, R9, Raul. His work rate, vision, passing and set piece delivery made him such an important player for them.
He was dropped by Madrid. His marks out of 10 at Milan were embarrassing, because the Italian press could see it was a marketing exercise bringing Beckham in. At PSG, he was humiliated by the Barcelona midfield.
Having said all that, he was brilliant at UTD
He was eventually dropped at Madrid but when he was past his best and struggled with niggling injuries. Didnt see much of him in Italy but I heard it wasnt the best for him over there.
@@gladiatorscoops4907not sure what you were watching. Madrid bought him for the money and exposure he brought to the club and Capello was happy to drop him even when Madrid were playing poorly
Are you saying Beckham was the best right sided midfielder in the world throughout his career? Ferguson, who would probably have a good idea said he managed 4 world class players at United and Beckham wasn't on the list.
As a scotsman and no man utd fan but Beckham was absolutely world class, look at his clubs and what he won collectively and personally.
I was too young to remember the scale of the Beckham hate at the time but was genuinely shocked that a manager would rip into and basically blame the whole loss to Beckham. I was speechless hearing him (on multiple occasions) blame beckham, it wasn't a flippant comment. Hoddle completely in the wrong
why were you shocked? he was absolutely right, beckham was an idiot who cost us the game
@@johnvalentine8941 how often do footballers make stupid decisions on the field. I've never seen a manager come out and completely blame the loss on them
@@jamesulbot this wasnt a mistake by beckham, it was petulance of the highest order that cost us a place in the next round, and hoddle was totally justiified in slamming him, what happened later was over the top
@@johnvalentine8941 Did Sven blame Rooney when he stamped on Carvalho? No, and Rooney IMO did a lot worse than beckham did brushing simeones leg. Completely out of order from Hoddle. I've seen managers criticise players, never have I seen one openly admit that the reason we lost was because of an individual player. He wouldn't have had death threats if Hoddle hadn't said that and stuck by him as a moment of madness
Good point!@@jamesulbot
Everybody forgets, in the game Sol Campbell scored what should have been the winning goal, but Alan bloody Shearer elbowed the Argentina goalkeeper, yet that clown Hoddle said nothing about that
You are so right and also let's not forget that Michael Owen was terrorising the Argentina defence, and yet when we went down to 10 men, Hoddle or big head Shearer decided that Shearer should be the furest forward. Useless management.
No, this is a red herring. The man cost an entire nation and his teammates.
@@dazeng4633 Wayne Rooney got sent off against Portugal 2006 World cup, i don't remember him getting the abuse that Beckham got. Explain why that is, I think it's all because people were jealous of Beckham's looks.
@@xiropigado he was a complete prick also...but that team wasn't playing as well as Beckham's at the time. Maybe we should of given him he'll too, but he was a teenager at the time as I recall?
True
I remember that
Yeah Shearer would be relieved that he weren't the scapegoat...
Then the penalties
It was harsh
We all know that we win draw and lose TOGETHER..........
Hoddle did blame Beckham but then back track by saying we didn't want to make anyone a scapegoat..
I personally feel Hoddle was jealous of Beckham.
Through fam and achievements..
Shame really as Hoddle could've been a great manager if he was a people person, but let's not forget Beckham made his choice by kicking out at Simione..
That wasn't Hoddles fault
At that time, Hoddle wasn't just digging out Becks, he destroyed Gazza and was also taking digs in public at Owen and Fowler. The guy was self righteous and arrogant, ultimately his undoing. I don't think Hoddle now is the same guy as he was then, but he absolutely threw Becks under the bus and it was disgraceful.
Gaza destroyed himself
Im not a football supporter (I watch the odd game and the World Cup!) but I watched Beckham this week and it is a great watch. Not what I expected at all. Guilty of binge watching. I turned my nose up at it originally when I saw some of the trailers, so I was delighted to see they didn’t do it justice. He was, as described here, a world class player. Good show. Worth a watch.
It was said In a number of interviews. One was over a week later.
Glenn Hoddle was asked multiple times by the director Steven Fischer’s team of the Beckham documentary to appear on the documentary and give his accounts and he refused. Also as a long time Spurs supporter during the time Hoddle played for us after watching the doc he blatantly and publicly threw David B under the bus!! It’s obvious to see because he publicly said when interviewed back then that it was David’s fault. That for me demonstrated the cowardly nature of Hoddle.
It was poor and he was his hero.
Just watched it rn and I couldn't imagine being Beckham, getting called up to the National first team by his childhood idol just to end up being thrown under the bus by said idol.
Hoddle literally went on camera and asked the public not to make a scapegoat out of Beckham. I don't see how he is supposed to have thrown Becks under the bus.
The West Ham fans hanging David in effigy was months later. The idea that Hoddle was responsible is absurd.
Not gonna lie, Glenn said it more than once without being forced, he could've easily said no we lost on pens. The doc doesn't portray in anyways then the way it happened. Does Glenn ever come out and apologise for throwing him under the bus?
Was it Glenn who got sent off and fucked it up?
@@JMatthew131 No, it wasn't. They lost on penalties. You don't point the blame directly to one person, just listen to his post match.
@@Tommy-dn2lk Well it was largely his fault tho wasn't it? They was reduced to 10 men for him being stupid. 11 v 11 they'd have probably won the match easily. Or does he want praising for being sent off now?
@@JMatthew131 So did u give Rooney the most over rated player the same stick after 2006???
@@epektasis242 Really?????? If u have a brain cell, Sol Campbell had a perfect goal ruled out in extra time with 10 men
Saying ‘the term world class gets thrown around a lot’ gets thrown around a lot these days
Beckham was always going to cop flak, Hoddle's comments made it much worse than it needed to be - and it was horrendous, disgusting abuse and threats he and his family had to endure. No excuse for that kind of crap from fans.
Yeah Beckham was the easiest target back then, cause he was dating Posh. But as Player he gave every ounce for England, more than Owen, Rooney and Terry etc
Rather than ask them if Becks was world class, they should ask them why Becks wasn't the best player of his era. You'd find a more accurate answer, that way.
“I don't mean to demean or criticise any of the great or very good footballers who played for me during my 26-year career at United, but there were only four who were world class: Cantona, Giggs, Ronaldo and Scholes." - Sir Alex Ferguson.
He was best right winger of his time, that's a fact.
Waant the best player of his era because he was in the zidane era simple
Comparing Ward-Prowse with Beckham is one of the most braindead takes I've heard. It is the internet though.
I never understand how Seaman never got any negative comments after being at fault giving away a terrible penalty and facing 6 penalties and not getting anywhere near any of them!?!
No chance the players today get anywhere near the abuse Beckham got
Wayne Rooney got sent off against Portugal 2006 World cup, i don't remember him getting the abuse that Beckham got. Explain why that is, I think it's all because people were jealous of Beckham's looks.
I don’t think he threw Beckham under the bus. He just answered with his emotions. In the end Becks got himself sent off and wrecked the teams chances. That’s it. It didn’t deserve the outcry it got though
In that same interview right after the game Hoddle says not to blame Beckham for the exit - he agrees that it cost them (it did) but didn't pin it on him. Even in the heated aftermath he didn't blame him. Very selectively edited, and pretty out of order. It's ridiculous that the Beckham documentary is made by Beckham's own production company.
He definitely did as did the British press and most of the nation. I was around at the time and was upset but as you step back it was all overblown. And yes he was world class.
David Beckham was world class and his mental strength was unbroken. After how he was treated after being sent of any player would have asked for a move abroad or take some time away. Beckham was in the starting team for United start of the season. He answered everyone by this actions. Kept his head down and played. He grew as a man. If A player today was treated like how Beckham was treated he would asking for 3 months off and and going on TV talking about how he is going through some mental issues.
Hoddle never through Beckham under the bus. He simple stated a fact. England just needed someone to blame so blamed Beckham inside of those who missed the pens.
Referring to the title of this video, I think Glenn hoddle who was idolised by Beckham definitely threw him under the bus. I believe he was covering his own reputation as England had gone out the World Cup on penalties and he used the Beckham incident as a crutch.
And by the way he was a genius and 💯 A World class player.
Several times noddles blamed Beckham, so was not a honest mistake
Hoddle definitely injustly blamed Beckham. There was no guarantee that England lost the game because of Beckhams red card but they certainly lost the game because of a missed penalty.
It was irresponsible for him to have done what he did
In any leadership position with employees or in a team such as this, openly blaming a young person is absolutely horrifying. His job is to protect them, not use them as excuses for poor results.
Glen Hoddle could have easily had a young mans suicide on his conciousness if Beckham hadn't been as strong as he were. What a shameful man.
I’m at a loss how Hoddle is bad guy here. He was asked a question and off course it was an issue. How was going down to 10 men helpful.
Hoddle literally asked the public not to make a scapegoat of Beckham. Why is he being blamed for this? It's the fans who ignored that and hounded Becks who should be blamed (especially at West Ham, Becks own backyard).
There's always been great sports documentaries Mr. Pardew.
I remember back in th day dude Beckham never really played with makele… they old him during pre-season
Glenn Hoddle handled it really poorly, but did he fall into Simeone's trap and needlessly kick him? No, Beckham did. Did the abuse off the back of that go too far? Yes. Fact is though, that Beckham came back bigger and better than ever, and that is to his credit.
I think he's a very similar player to Trent Alexander Arnold. Keep in mind this was when 4-4-2 was the norm rather than 4-3-3 and the modern variations you get now. Neither of them have incredible pace but they both have a crazy right boot. Beckham probably was more physical but then again this was when the game was more physical in general so I guess it's hard to make direct comparisons.
It's an insult to Beckham to compare him with Trent Alexander Arnold. A better comparison would be Kevin De Bruyne
😳You don't play alongside Figo, Zidane unless your world class?
In the doc the Madrid president clearly says Beckham was bought for a marketing strategy (MONEY) Nothing more nothing less,... Beckham was a good baller though 👌
All of this was after Barcelona had a bid accepted for him...
@@CoachKnapovicSports yuppp ...
Good not world class
Beckham was runner up for the Ballon D’Or. His medal haul is up there. He wasn’t some big part player in the Champions League. He was instrumental. Utd were the worlds best side, and he wasn’t Dennis Irwin or Gary Pallister he was one of the first names on the team sheet. That Utd team people forget how good it was, I thought they signed someone absolutely world class in Seba Veron who was dominating teams in Serie A, he couldn’t displace Keane & Scholes. Beckham was bloody good
World class for me means you can control a game from wherever or whatever position you're playing. Bellingham is becoming that guy too... regardless what position he plays, he's winning you games. Another way to measure WC is ask Zidane, R Carlos, Ronaldo etc what they think of him - they will tell you he's 100% WC. As a Liverpool fan, he was so dangerous .. never gave away the ball and landed passes on a dime.
Figo, Nedved, Overmars, Giggs, Mendieta were all bettter wingers than Beckham. Excellent player but lets not overeact to the documentary
Someone like Beckham would amazing in Ange's teams... exactly the player he wants as a 10/8.
Rather have Hoddle though.
Great addition pards to talksport and a great manager aswell, the premiership misses him ⚽️
Steady on now. Great to have him on here though.
I agree with the comments that Beckham was world class. He didn't play with Makelele at Real Madrid though as stated. That was quite famously one of the big reasons why they didn't win a trophy for most the time Beckham was there.
When you’re in a midfield of Scholes , Keane and Giggs. It would be hard to shine. They get way more love than Becks.
If this happened today, I think the press would have been very careful and not go too far. Social media though.... would have been brutal. I also think a big portion of social media would also have come to his defense.
The Beckham series has made a world-football fan of me!
Having seen the Beckham documentary, I would say all of his woes over his career, he kind off brought them all on with his own issues & decisions 🤷🏼♂️
Fantastic player obvs.
Wasn’t Beckham a Ballon D’Or candidate in the era of Ronaldo and Zidane? He was world class for sure!
In modern football he’d have to be more right of centre in a 433 and deffo not a right forward/winger.
Loke Giggs, could play in middle as well but he was stereotyped as a winger.
Michael Owen held a grudge against Beckham too, it was annoying what he did
Wow cheek of Owen, when he nicked a living from Newcastle
I hate to admit it but he was quality, even when he moved to center mid he was still good and could pick out a pass
Brutal, I am now watching the Netflix documentary
Beckham was one of the best players in the world. There was a reason why Madrid signed him apart from his commercial revenue. No player in the world at his time alongside Juninho can defend his free kicks and still has the most free kick goals in the Premier League however Ward Prowse is closing in.
He was world class but feel like when he says best right side midfielder, you’d have to give the edge to Figo
Beckham is world class for the Greece free kick alone.
Yes
YES
lets get 1 thing str8 glen did not only say in the once, he said it day after day , he was bang out of order and behaved awful, as a manager you take the blames and deflect from your players, glen defo said this days after the match too
What clown compared becks to James ward prowse? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 James ward prowse is good, but come on
His pretty boy persona got him a lot of haters. Dude was world class. One of the most disrespected players in England
I’m not sure if Beckham was WC. He could strike a ball with deadly accuracy. Him playing for Madrid was to sell shirts more than his play. But that is my view.
There were several players who ain't fans of Hoddle ,
Ray Parlour ,not being picked , because of a joke he had with the faith healer , Gascoigne who got us to 98 in qualifying, being dropped from the squad
Hoddle came out looking terribly in the documentary....he was only person who all the Beckhams detested.
I remember was the issue in training where the team was trying a set price and hoddle mocked beckham and said something in the lines of you’re not good enough to do it so let’s move on - hoddle had stepped in and did the set first first time - which seems like an ego thing that hoddle wanted to prove he was the better player - hoddle was brilliant player and maradona was impressed when played with him but was a poor manager thought was to clever - should never have got rid of el tel
he couldn't separate himself from the trainings, always wanted to take part rather than coaching
Present at England training sessions are you.
@@chrisiveson6838 the players literally talked about it afterwards and it was widely reported at the time
Correct! Rio Ferdinand has confirmed this several times. Hoddle was jealous of Beckham.
wasn't just England players either@@tvgcmma9215
Beckham also played for Preston North End, Don't know why they missed that off the list of massive clubs he's played for.
😂
Of his time!!! Of course he was world class. He proved it. World class doesn’t mean the best, it means a selection of the highest ability players and Beckham was just that, at that time.
Great player Hoddle but his man management at that time was shocking, he didnt defend Beckham at all, in fact his comments were pretty stupid - 'did he cost us?'
Becks was a much better player than JWP who is a good player
Hoddle is a walloper - 100% had it in for him before and after
If people don’t think beckam was world class then they didn’t watch his career. Just gotta look at his cv.
If you can get into the Galacticos starting 11, you're world class.
Hoddle would have thrown Becks under the steam roller...but the road workers were on their lunch break.
Liverpool fan/supporter…..OF COURSE HE IS/WAS WORLD CLASS! Why is this even a topic 🙄
James Ward Prowse compared to Becks 😅 come on.
Never heard so many 'erms' in one segment. Well done lads.
Who's the mouth breather in the middle, apart from a coronary waiting to happen, that is?
What about how Glen Huddle treated Ian Wright, he left him out of the Euros....talk about that
Hoddle threw Beckham under the bus, big time. He also did the same to Gascogne.
You do if you sell as many shirts as he did !!
Not enough talk about the redemption becks got over simeone in 98-99 champions league
Hoddle said the same thing twice, he also didn't want to take part in the doc which was sad. Fergie had run ins with Becks and he took part. Hoddle needs to ask himself why David Batty was taking a penalty when he never ever took one.
He had no obligation to take in the documentary. He definitely could have handled the way he reacted better
If David Beckham focused solely on football he would of been classed as better then Scholes and Giggs. Beckham was unbelievable in his prime. His prime he is clear of all England players bare Rooney and Harry Kane and even then I would take Becks over Harry Kane. Beckham was a one of a kind English player and we haven’t had a player kick a ball like him ever since.
You only have to look at Harry Maguire to know that the vilification has got worse, not better.
managerial media comment masterclass from Pardew there. gives a lesson on how hoddle should have answered the question at the time. " i havent seen the documentary if im honest so i cant comment"
Hoddle could have easily said "i havent seen the incident back so i cant comment". now of course that would have been disingenuous but thats the standard approach to the situation of potentially hanging your player or team out to dry. You will hear this every single week in the PL, managers avoid the question. Thats just how its done.
Classic from Pardew even if he didnt mean it
Beckham is not grieve that much for what the English team manager said but his family was. His mum and dad was. All over the documentary David didn't lash out at anyone really. Posh is the one rightfully so lashing out to the media, and again she has all the right to do it. They were a young family and they were treated really badly. And that treatment from the media still goes on today with the bullying of McGuire.
The ever at crossing ever didn’t need to beat his defender serviced Ronaldo and Raul honestly an absolute joke.
Course he was he was the greatest crosser and free kick taker in the world now that’s what 30-40% of football it says it all he’s was brilliant I was gutted when he left but this shows it wasn’t him that wanted to move
Beckham wasnt world class he was good but he wasnt world class
Beckham did cost us the result and obviously a chance of winning the world cup.
We had a some great players back then.
Hoddle really did throw Beckham under a bus. Even Alex Ferguson defended him to the hilt after that World Cup.
The way the nation turned on Beckham was disgraceful. I’m a Gooner and I’m saying that. He came very close to joining us on loan but Wenger chose against it and allowed him to just train with us instead.
Hoddle threw him under the bus if it was Capello you would be calling him out
world class grudge holder
Remember when Glenn said "people born with disabilities were being punished for the sins of a former life" lovely lad. I think with all the noise about Beckham at the time nobody noticed what a twunt Hoddle was to him.
Studio guests loathe to criticise Hoddle for biased reasons so don't answer none answer the question. Pardue puts comment down to Hoddle being inexperienced and young but won't admit Hoddle threw Beckham under the bus. As for the 2 Spurs on the panel they avoid answering all together. Cowardly and biased.
But it was true. If he didn’t say it. Everyone would of thought it. But Beckam showed his true character and probably learned from it. 🤔
Becks was getting kicked to help by the Argies and the ref did f..k all
Id say very good but not world class
Got to love a debate with 3 people who all agree 😴. But seriously, what’s the point? Someone at least try to play devils advocate for a couple mins. Terrible punditry.
I was lucky to see Beckham play live & I'm telling ya now Beckham was 100% word class & for me he would definitely make a world 🌎 x11 ⚽️ that James Ward-Prouse comment is super disrespectful 😂😂😂 Beckham was a leader & easily the best passer of a ball & the best at corners & freekicks. People who said he wasn't fast are also wrong as he was just as fast as kevin de Bruyne and people don't say he is slow 😂 ⚽️
Yes, he did throw him under the bus. May well have won if he didn't get sent off, but can't blame him for the English penalty curse and getting knocked out!
Yeah he did
Beckham never played with Makelele but whos counting🤷♂️
What clown even brought up the comparison with JWP? It has to be a kid who probably wasn't even alive when Becks was playing because nobody my age, or somebody who witnessed Beckham's career, would even insult him with that comparison.
JWP is a good player. He's very good in a few areas and world-class at set pieces. Trust me, i know, as a Saints fan. Beckham was on another level to James Ward-Prowse, lol.
Mot to the level being made in the documentary.Beckham is clearly world class and.capablr.of playing.on the world.stage at the highest level. Add to that all the people moaning about hoddle werenthenones blaming him and being far harsher than hoddle was lol.
