This shows how refs no longer understand their role. They believe they have to enforce the law, but the laws exist to protect the game. If your enforcement of the law undermines the integrity of the game, you’re the problem. It’s why real judges, who preside over real cases, are always encouraged to fix their own mistakes.

You are not listening. Dean isn't disagreeing, he is explaining the constraints under which the officials have to work. There are a lot of other discretionary areas Refs can use commonsense but this is not one of them.

It happened to Arsenal 3 times last season, 1 against Man Utd, 1 against Newcastle and 1 against Watford. We lost against Utd by 1 goal, drew with Newcastle and drew against watford... thats at least 5 pts lost. We lost tye league by 5 pts... they can't tell us that it doesn't affect the game... Arsenal weren't the only team that were robbed several times by VAR, Brighton were hit hard by it, Wolves, Forest, its a joke of a system

Every game has issues, if we start replaying clear and obvious errors, what's to stop teams turning aroimd and saying this foul or this missed foul isn't a major impact on the game? You can't, every decision has an impact, so the question then is, what is the best solution? Are we looking for bans on officials? I'm sure Arsenal and few other teams would like to see the back of Oliver. Fines? Get rid of VAR? I mean its brought more problems than it has solved since it came in. What needs to definately happen is some accountability for actions that have major implications for the integrity of the game. The other 19 PL clubs can move on all they want, but Darren England' has become an instant Spurs legend after this game and deserves nothing less than a statue erected and a song composed to praise him for years to come to always remember his dedication to the success of the club. This was the quickest restart of play that I can remember when there is a VAR offside check. If we really look at most offside checks, typically it is very close and almost impossible to call correctly without the VAR lines to determine offside or not. However, comparing this situation to most other offside checks..Diaz was onside by a mile. It is hard for me to not think they did not want the goal to count.

If it is the last game of the season and a team gets robbed a goal that could have won the title, would they just say that is protocol?? I think not. It would be utterly unacceptable. Changes need to be made or the integrity of the game will be completely lost.
I wonder how many teams have suffered from reffing cock ups in the last week or so. But Liverpool lose out and there is all the grief and victimhood for all to see. Reffing cock ups should be part and parcel of the game, you win some you lose some. They are not because there is a groundswell of opinion that our refs (and the PL) have an agenda to make sure the biggest names are in the CL (ie Liverpool and Man Utd). This has been going on for donkey's years. Kick them all out and bring in the top refs from around the world and have genuine impartiality.

The right thing was to stop the game and find a way to award Liverpool the goal. Poor leadership is what we have with referees in the premier league. If the seatbelt sign is on during a flight and someone is having a heart attack the right thing would be for whoever can help to take off their seatbelt and go save that person's life. I blame the clubs who refused the PGMOL to implement Semi automation offside, because I see no logical reason for their refusal except that they felt it will chop of their goals only to turn out, that it could have helped them better.

In NHL (hockey in North America), there have been several instances that a video booth replay has shown that a puck has crossed the line, and even though a few minutes have been played, they let the on-ice ref know, who, at the next stoppage in play, announces that a goal was missed on-ice, but discovered on video. The goal is then counted, and the clock is set back to the time it occurred. And nothing that has happened since then counts. It absolutely can be done in football too.
As a Liverpool fan, the damage has been done; it is what it is. Happy our club made a stance to provide transparency and clarity over what happened so errors like this can be prevented. Do we win the game with the goal? Maybe. Who's to say we win today if we had won last weekend? Would it be confidence or complacency? Let's carry on giving every game 110% and see where it'll take us. YNWA.

Never any mistakes? You might reduce them to 1%, and the standard of mistakes even now is already so much higher than it used to be without VAR despite this error, but there will always be mistakes.
In the past we routinely got such offside decision wrong, once a game…we’d have said “oh, imperfect human eyes” and move on. The fact this is such hot debate in fact documents how much better we got with VAR.

if someone forgets to enter a goal in the match report and the match restarts then will that goal not count? the protocol says that a match may not be interrupted to correct an error or that a match may be replayed when such an error occurred, Liverpool's offside goal is basically the same as if someone forgot to fill in a goal in the match report.

If it had been fixed after 10 seconds and leavy had complained, everyone knows that the right decision had been made on balance after the initial mistake, there might have been an apology, but the match would never be replayed for the sake of mere seconds. Exactly, games are stopped and pulled back all the time. Even Diaz scoring got pulled back and the outcome changed.
But they haven't stopped the game a 2nd time. The game is stopped while the call is checked. Then then game is started to take the pen or whatever. They don't take the pen then say "woops that was wrong. Stop the game again and chalk off the goal".
Play goes on (while VAR carries out a check) and gets pulled back all the time. There was no penalty or subsequent goal, the ball went out for a throw. Even if there had been a significant event, it should still be pulled back as it would have been if, for example, a corner comes in and there's a possible penalty incident. While VAR is checking, the defending team counter and score. VAR now gives the penalty for the foul and chalks off the subsequent goal. That's fine by the rules, but rewinding 30 secs of nothing can't be undone. Surely the point is to have fair outcomes and for goals awarded to actually be counted, or else, why play? It's the difference between those who know the rules and those who know the game. @@russellward4624
It makes logical sense because in case of penalty it is the opposite team who fouled and they will be punished for it, but if you stop it because of referee mistake one side of the game might feel damaged by it - maybe the scored/had a corner or whatever…and yet they did nothing wrong to deserve the rewind.
It doesn't, it's about getting the right/fair result. "if you stop it because of referee mistake one side of the game might feel damaged by it" and if you don't, one side is definitely damaged by it (Liverpool in this instance). Spurs wouldn't have been damaged, they would have got exactly what was warranted, a goal against them (i.e. punished for failing to defend the attack). I just watched the Ireland Scotland rugby match and it so transparent everyone can hear the referee and officials in what they are saying and what decision they make. That’s for the full match. Maybe points deduction is where to look to resolve a situation like this for a serious error affecting the game or the outcome. Like rewarding a point/points at the end of a season. Obviously it shouldn't happen and hopefully never happens again....
The ref can stop the game if a dog runs onto the field of play, or if a streaker flashes their bits. But (apparently) a ref can't stop the game to correct an incorrectly given decision. Games' gone! 🤣

The greatest preservation of the integrity and the rules of football is to award a goal if the officials have concluded it is indeed a goal. There's no bigger breach than failing to do so.
I’m confused because we have seen games in the past where play has continued and var has looked at something and stopped play to take the on field ref back to the incident under review. Now they say they carnt do anything once play restarts.
So how can you give a penalty after the fulltime whistle but are afraid to stop the game at a throw in to give a correct decision
Cause game was already stopped one time and restarted after the var check completed.... whereas the foul occured full time whistle blown after that var check took place... and game was stopped and penalty was given.

I just don't get it, he says stopping the game to correct the uncalled goal would be worse then not giving the goal, how can someone come to that conclusion? No wonder there are so many mistakes by refs because if they all share the same views as this guy it seems they're lacking in common sense. They are too focused on the rules and trying to be robots, at some point common sense needs to overrule everything else. It would be one thing if they just missed it, but they recognized the error and it should've been corrected.
coming from a ref perspective, it says in IFAB laws of the game that once you restart a game, you cannot change a decision. For example, if a goal was given and you realized 5 minutes after play restarted that there were too many players on the field, you cannot bring back the decision. As long as refs follow protocol they have done their job right, but if they reject it they're in deep trouble. It sounds nice as a football fan but as a ref you can't just make up rules. It would be the same thing as if I incorrectly gave away a penalty and then gave another penalty on the other end to atone for it.
PGMOL and other ref organizations care much more about rules than making the game fair.
The problem is how long can the game play before too much time has passed. 30 seconds? 2mns? 10mns? What if they make it wins and 2mns and 10 seconds later they realize they got it wrong? What if the oposition goes down the pitch and scores in that 20 seconds? Chalk off that goal and award the 1st goal? It just sets up other messes down the road to fix 1.

Game hadn't restarted after the incident though. Ref had stopped the game (with final whistle) but he can easily go back if there was an incident just before. Look, as a Liverpool fan I’m upset over the disallowed goal but, all we need now is clearer speech when making a decision. “Confirm that is a goal” was all that was needed by either the Ref or VAR
That is exactly what I was thinking when I was watching this - surprised they didn’t touch on it.
Their procedures and training are terrible, simply terrible. And the VAR booth is an accident waiting to happen. I would go further and say we have been getting accidents that are swept under the rug.
If it is such a strain to get a very simple and common call correctly executed, how well do you think the booth performs when there are multiple issues to analyze and it is genuinely hard? Now we know why it slipped their minds to looked at Pickford wiping out Virgil. Now we know why the Rodri handball at Everton slipped their minds. When the situation is non-easy, they are proverbial chickens with their heads cut off in the booth.
Yes, the fact that clear confirmation of the actual result of the VAR review (i.e. Player is onside, goal to Team X) is not part of the process is idiotic. Pure ineptitude by those that designed the VAR processes.
The hilarious thing about this argument is that they watched the chelsea game there was an possible offside that ended in a goal, the game restarted then var and the ref stopped the game to check again! I think there should be an independent person to check the conclusions of the VAR, this way if VAR comes to a wrong conclusion, someone else can point it out.

If I remember correctly, a penalty was missed by the on pitch officials, the game came to a natural stop for a free kick or whatever and the VAR said to the referee that he had missed a penalty. The referee looked at the pitch side monitor and agreed and the penalty was awarded. What is the difference?
I remember it now after watching it here on CZcams. Brighton v Man Utd. The ref blew the final whistle and the players left the pitch. The VAR told the ref who then called all the players and officials back onto the pitch and Fernandes scored the penalty goal giving Utd the win. So Mike Dean doesn’t know what he is talking about.

the problem is that these refrees are too stubborn and have this aura of untouchability .
If play has stopped, for something like a throw in or a free kick, there’s no reason as to why they can’t delay it until a correction is made. They had recognised a *significant error* had been made but did _nothing_ because they initially failed to correct it.
Instead, they let it continue then chalk it up as a human error. Instead of punishing the *professional* referees that messed up so badly, they just send a “sorry bro” to the unfortunate club/clubs that are affected that week. Nonsense.
I would say it was the most significant error you could have in a football game, a legitimate goal not being counted even after they recognized the mistake.
I mean, there is - he's not wrong the laws of the game say you can't except in a case of mistaken identity or violent conduct. Sure, the rule is nonsense, but it's there. Doesn't stop the VARs telling the ref though.
No because after a legitimate goal it has to be a kick off (as in back to the center circle) I think which means a completely different phase of play which means getting rid of the one active. I think that's the problem and why that law is there in order to keep the game flowing. Granted it leaves the ref's vulnerable to makin gmistakes as we saw but that's the law. That's why I htink that rule is in there. It's because it's a goal a goal is always the final stage of a play you always go back to kick off when a goal has been scored. It's because the goal was disallowed initially because they thought he was offside that they allowed play to continue. It was onl yafte rthey gave permisson for play to be continued s i t did that they realised their error. Unfortunately by then it was too late to go back on it . Bu tuntil/unless the rules change to allow them to do that the onl yway atm t oprevent any mix up in the future is to clear up lines of communication. Which it sounds like the new procedures announced are designed to do.

Law states you can’t undertake a review if play restarts. But they would not be starting a review but getting a decision to the ref correctly.

Imagine this: The VAR & officials realised that they can't backtrack but that it was definately a goal so they explain to both managers what has happened immediately. Both managers agree that to preserve the correct score, Spurs would allow Liverpool to walk the ball in. Ref saves his VAR colleague, and Spurs look like heroes to the footballing world. I have no problem with VAR being introduced, people are forgetting the past frustrations of seeing the ball go literal feet over the line or a player clearly being onside/offside on TV and the Ref/Linesmen missing it. The problem now is the fools operating VAR. Yorkshire Old Boys club who aren't fit to officiate League 2. We need new talent from abroad, the current crop of British refs are abysmal.

What about challenges on cautioning after the game has finished. If a clear error has been made during the game how come red cards, bans be modified post match upon review? Where does this protocol fit in with the consistency in the game?

Many years ago, in the World Pool Championships, the Q ball hit 2 balls and the referee can not determine if the shot was good or bad by naked eye; Realising the importance of the call he had to make on who will progress on into the tournament, he went on to the TV monitors and asked the TV coverage team to look at the replays. I'm sure 20 years ago those weren't in the rules if he is allowed to look at the monitor to review. I salute that ref for having the presence of mind on what to do.
Funnily in the Burnley v Chelsea game the game restarted before the VAR check had completed and the ref stopped the game. So either you can or can't stop the game to correct an error, which is it?
Ball moving when taking a free kick or free kick from wrong place, game stopped and free kick retaken. Corner taken and ref blows to then talk to a couple of players who are jostling, corner retaken.

So it’s apparently a discussion about the semantics of the rule to not stop play…couldn’t the game be stopped due to a scoreboard/time keeping error? I feel like since the VAR official was in fact “confirming” a goal that the game could’ve legally been paused to correct an error with the “scoreboard”

The thing that really bothers me is that they can bring the game back for violent conduct but not when looking at a goal. Football is about goals for crying out loud and having an ex-referee, especially Mike Dean, excusing his former colleagues and saying that protocols can't change tells you why the Premier League's officials are amongst the worst in the world. Show me another league where VAR is so controversial.
Is it against the “laws of football” for the refs to acknowledge a legitimate goal, but then not award it?
A referee before VAR could make a decision and then realise 5 minutes later that he may of made the wrong one. Doesn’t mean he can just go back and correct it.

I think people are forgetting that for YEARS there's been dodgy decisions, which have lead to goals standing that shouldn't of or vice versa....The goal should of stood, it was a major cock up, but it happens, if we Replay the game it'll create a monster and open the floodgates for loads more situations, as harsh as it sounds everyone has to move on now.
