IM JUST GONNA BUY YOU A GOD DAMN HYPERLITE ALREADY!!!! It’ll be the last pack you ever need to buy😉😉😇😇 Also I love that you KEPT the Walmart backback all this time😂😂😂
Love your videos too!
😂🤣
Dang that was funny. Enjoyed watching your videos at the same time as E-wolf
Well, I might need a few extra packs for day hikes, never know!
@@EvansBackpackingVideos I sure love my Minimalist by Gossamer Gear, $59 when available.
No load lifters and quite heavy tho
Always enjoy your honesty and “real life” stories about your hiking adventures and gear Evan!
Thanks Chris, I really appreciate that!
😊👊
Backpacking is not a fashion show. Word. I, for one, am glad you’re making videos again. 😊
Thanks Micey! I feel like I never quit making videos but I guess there were some pretty long gaps between videos. And I was spending a lot of time on my Instagram account. And my time has been limited. There's only just so much time, you know! (Honestly, and perhaps wisely, I seem to appreciate each new moment more and more the older I get . . . since it feels like all my remaining moments could suddenly cease at any time. Uh oh, this comment is taking a dark turn.) . . . Anyway, as always, thanks for adding your thoughts . . .
OMG, I have the same blue Kelty you showed in the beginning- too cool! I still use it for family weekend backpacking trips when I carry our big tent. And it works fine, yes heavier, but we did 6 family trips this past fall with that thing and the focus was on enjoying the north GA mountains, not on if I had a fancy new pack or not...
Family trips tend to require a lot of gear, hah!
I love my V2 and use a ULA Ohm for my winter pack. Really glad to see you putting out videos! I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again, I’d love to get together out on the trail. Your Smoky Mountain videos inspired me to get back out in Appalachia and now I’m working on my 900 miles.
That's an awesome goal! I'd definitely be doing it myself if I lived a little closer.
I still have a Kelty LaSalle from 1996 (I think). It weighs about 1 metric ton and is cracking the concrete floor in my storage room but it brings back a lot of memories.
Funny, thanks!
Another good one, Evan. You're right; gear is very much a process.
Thanks Drew!
Excellent Video Evan
Thanks Gary!
Still have my 7.5 pound Dana Terraplane from 1985.... don’t use it but as you point out, still think about the memories of trips gone by.
Agreed! Recently though CZcams videos act like my memory. I can just watch my old videos, hah.
I'm excited that you seem to be back doing more regular videos. I am still just a day hiker, but I saw an outdoor brands back pack at walmart on clearance for $10 and got if I ever do a multi day hike, so it was cool that you mentioned the one you tried was more than servicable. Still need a light wieght sleeping bag. Already have a small tarp like you that will be "shelter".
Great video and can't agree more about looking beyond the current "IT" brand. I'm currently using Seek Outside's Unaweep bag and happy I switched from the Zpacks Arc Haul.
Thanks for that, appreciate it!
You are so spot on Evan! I have multiple packs and they all have great memories,, I have used an old army surplus Alice Pack, kelty, and Gregory pack in the Boundaries Waters of Minnesota and Canada and don't remember what they were like using, but I remember the trip,,,, Same with my Zpacks and Osprey packs on the Florida Trail or the trails here in Middle Tennessee where I live and beyond,,, But I have to be honest, I am now a Zpacks fan,,,, All my packs have their place in my hiking adventures history,,,
Nice video. Looks like nice memories from your youth. Love my HMG pack...seems to fit and ride just right. That Joey pack looks like it might be good for day hikes.
Yes, I use it for day hikes too.
Cool seeing your collection of packs and how your style evolved. I’m a Kelty fan and use a set from their white cloud series...old school, but way ahead of their time. I still have my framed Kelty from my teenage years and used it on some of my earliest videos. 😎
That's a very old Kelty!
I believe an earlier video of yours reminded me my first backpack in the 70s was a Camp Trails external frame. I have moved to taking less and walking more and love it.
Yes, I think that's a good way to go -- taking less and walking more -- but not always, of course!
I cannot explain how necessary & important this video is.
Well, thank you very much; on the other hand, as I have been trained to recognize irony in all its forms, I think it would be prudent of me not to amplify your one-sentence comment with a two-sentence reply.
Great old pictures, always so moody memories, Evan! btw, those mechanical SLR cameras were heavy as a brick, i even used a rollei-flex medium format till 2007. Still in love with my gigantous 23 year old Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre 70+20 cause it has all the patches from brazil on it, for which i bought it back then. Keep it up and maybe come up on Kyles Trail-Tales podcast to tell us stories from the "not so lightweight" hiking times. As always, Cheers!
Thanks, appreciate it! Yeah I carried a heavy camera without giving it a second thought that I remember. What I *do* remember is how I couldn't afford the film and processing.
I still think you’re unique. You’re my favorite backpacker to be around
Wow Scott thanks!
My neighbor had a Kelty external frame from the early 1970's, when he retired and moved to Texas about 5 years ago he still had it, never saw the need for anything else. My pack is evolving, generally getting smaller & lighter.
If it works, I guess there's no need to fix it!
Great video, Evan! Just revisited. I'm finding I also really enjoy the feel of a totally frameless pack with no hip belt. I like the way they ride high on your back, feel really light, and allow hip mobility. I've worked hard to get my base weight down to fit into one and won't be going back except for maybe a deep winter hike. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
You're welcome!
The voice of reason as always. I love my HMG packs - Southwest 2400 and Daybreak. Look forward to your future videos.
Thanks Tammy!
I am so happy to see new four videos this month! Enjoy and appreciate your thoughts and perspectives on backpacking. As someone who binge watches your AT thru hike playlist it was fun learning about the backpack issues.
Thanks for the encouragement about the videos! I guess I had a new surge of video-making energy. It takes a lot of time for me to put one together but it's all fun once I'm finished and it's out the door.
Good advice Evan. I’ve been following you for a long time and learned much from you. I’m pretty much a GSMNP backpacker and my style has evolved to fit that area. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to more trip vids. Stay safe.
Thanks, I'll try!
Great perspectives! Really like the objective and transparent assessments.
Great, thanks -- and thanks for commenting!
Good vid post. You can tell what a person enjoys the most by how many of some type of items they own. I myself have 9 hammock systems, and only one tent.
That's an excellent point, Ken, thanks!
Awesome video Evan ! Cheers !
Great video. I can still remember all four backpacks I ever bought, even though the first one was nearly half a century ago. The one I remember best is the pack I lived out of for six months as a study abroad student in Europe. I still have the pack but it's not usable anymore.
Thanks for the comment! Funny how people seem to keep packs with memories even though they don't work any longer.
ive got a green zpacks arc blast too. i find its a really comfortable pack. i recently bought a zpacks sub nero and im really liking it for shorter hikes, weighs only 8 ozs
Thanks for the comment. I've considered that sub nero.
Great video, just sent it to a friend who wants to thru hike the AT next year. My personal story with an Arc Haul is somewhat similar, it broke three times on the AT each time requiring replacement parts. I have now switched to an Atom+ and like it so far but haven't put enough miles on it. I am at a point where I realized that I might never go frameless, a minimal frame allows me to be so much more flexible at the 2oz weight penalty. Want to haul 4 liters of water so you can dry camp with a spectacular view? Not a problem. Want to skip a town on a long distance hike so you can catch up to friends - just carry more food. Want to carry out a few tall heads for a zero near a water fall? No biggie.
That being said, the frame and hip belt on my Atom+ are removable so I plan on experimenting further.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome, thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I was at a Walmart once, spotted a Granite Gear pack, picked it up and found it surprisingly light. Yet I have a long torso and it did not fit quite right. A friend is still using it and loves it. I consider Granite Gear a weight conscious economy alternative for a pack. Thanks for the video Evan.
You're welcome, thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice to hear from you again. I am using a ula pack seems pretty tough. Hope I get to meet you someday.
That's great, thanks -- I guess the most important thing is that you're "using" your ULA pack, rather than just storing it, if you know what I mean. Saying that as someone who loves to backpack . . .
I still rock my almost 7lb gregory palisades or something like it, from the mid 90s. It was a beast and could handle 70+lbs or climbing and camping gear without a flinch. Now I only use it for bulky winter stuff but damn, that thing is still super comfortable. I have since switched to smaller lighter packs from gregory and granite gear and love them, but when it comes time when a lot of gear needs to be brought into the back country, I look past the lighter packs and go right to old faithful.
Nice comment, thanks!
When I started to hike up Mt LeConte to the lodge. I first used old military Alice framed packs. Then later bought a CamelBak BFM 100oz Mil Spec Crux. So many packs out there but what limited hiking this old man does now. It works fine for me. Thank you for the video. Take care be safe.
Thanks, appreciate it!
Great video again!
Been subscribed for years. Going to stay subscribed. Always enjoy Evan's videos--he is one of my top 4 ! BTW, my Zpacks Nero is a piece of junk and I hate it & overpriced big time. I wish I had bought a Pa'lante
Appreciate that, thanks!
Hard to beat Outdoor Products from Walmart for the money. I have a Kelty coyote now that I love.
Great video Evan
Thanks for the comment, appreciate it!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Probably the Pentax K1000, everyone had those back in the day.
Yes I think that's correct, thanks!
Great video Evan
Thanks!
well done. well said
Thanks!
I have 3 packs. I am trying not to buy any more. lol Great video I enjoy the insight
I know what you mean, thanks!
Is it ideal "to buy a used backpack? I kind of see it like using someone elses toothbrush. I mean, even if it is "slightly" used, a lot of funk can build up even after just a few hours. Thanks Evan!!!
Hah, true! Although I suspect there are packs for sale used that have never actually been used. Or maybe not . . .
I have a Kelty that weighs 7 lbs. Smh. I know you love your tarp but if you had to pick a tent what do you think would be your fave?
Hah had, no idea! I've got three tents, one a giant family thing, the other two are the REI brand.
I still use my Coleman Peak 1 from 1985 for overnights. My 1st Spring Break AT week had that thing at 55 lbs. Luckily my buddy decided we needed to go back after he nearly froze after the 1st night. The next year, I got it to 35 Lbs. My knee gave out by day 3 and we got a ride out of the AT.
Years later, My doctor said my lower back nerves were pinched, so a waist belt was off limits. So, I carry the 20 lbs. on my shoulders. Glimpses in my latest video.
I love stories like that. I've gone out with a very heavy pack too. It's great once you set up camp, but getting there is a real pain . . . Thanks for commenting.
Do you Trail-run in sandals?
Yes.
I liked the video but can you try to keep them more breif?
Hah hah, sure! But since I have longer videos that have done better, I think what you must mean is that I should find a way to pack more invaluable information into each minute of my video. And I totally agree. I'm always working on that but sometimes I miss that mark. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Try LiteAF.
Thanks maybe someday! I know Frozen likes them.
Partly because of your problems on the AT I ordered two backpacks from Zpacks. I have more confidence that my family can send a replacement.
Good idea!
According to my translation of your comment from Russian to English, which might be wrong, you are wondering why I'm wasting my time on unknown unpopular trails while I could be doing something better like the American Discovery Trail. Well, I understand what you mean. And honestly, if enough people got together to PAY me to hike the American Discovery Trail, which isn't going to happen, maybe I'd consider it. But they'd also have to convince my wife Andrea to come along with me . . . No, it's just not going to happen.
