I'm sure he worked hard and took chances but let's not kid ourselves, he also had some major luck and was in the right place at the right time. Getting to his level is like becoming a successful actor or musician - many try but very few make it, and it's not just because they worked harder or whatever.

I sometimes view him as an old Linkin Park member who settled down; I realise he's a geek and eccentric in some mild ways, but he's also a successful entrepreneur and a loved husband, so it clearly balances out well enough to make him pull off the "some aspects of my look have a 90-esque edginess" charisma. And he probably knows all that, and doesn't care about those who fail to realise - he's an adult. But the real reason I am responding here is because I think the people who make fun of the 80s and 90s these days would actually be surprised to take a closer look into what inspired those times. When people did what people now view as "edgelord attempts at coming off as cool" back then, it wasn't that at all; the 60s and 70s had just passed, and people were tired of every lifestyle choice being linked to a political statement, and every event having to be crammed full with philosophical perspective on ethics, because it removed the possibility of trying out things simply out of curiosity, and the desire to do extreme things, even if they are a little stupid. In a way, they behaved very much like the anti-academia movements in today's populist agendas. Sure, at the limitless extent to which that stance drove way too many ecstasy-infused parties and no-worries Barbie pop queens, it still warrants being made fun of. But summarising the general idea behind the period as doing everything *trying to look cool* is blatantly ill-informed; pretty much the opposite of what was going on. And that people now *think* they looked like people trying to look cool says a lot about what people's rolemodels are today.
