Ratel Pro Analog camera pt 1: Looking at it's daytime and night performance

  • The Ratel series of cameras has always been my go-to for analog FPV. So I was keen to test this new model, the Ratel Pro. Due to bad weather here in the UK, no flying yet, so this is a general test looking at the features and seeing how the picture looks in daylight/nighttime/indoors. Part 2 will (eventually) come when I'll actually fly a quad with it.

    The smearing during low light is caused by 3DNR. Good for security cams but useless for us. You'd think they leave this out by now, but it seems no one has ever really tailored the settings menu to fpv flying.
    But hey, I don't complain, I'm happy to see a new analog camera. 🥳

      Could very well be, but to my eyes looks more like multi-frame stacking, especially the way it nulls out when the camera is still.

      Cheers - I'll retest, and try changing those settings

    Very nice. I do wonder how it compares directly with the original Ratel, as well as my favorite Foxeer Cat II.

      When I do (eventually) get to fly with it, I'll try and take a quad with the original camera on as well. Always going to be slightly different though as I've always got different VTX's in place as well

      Cheers MC - I look forward to flying.... eventually. What is with this weather!

    Intreresting. I still use old Runcam Owl cameras - they're fantastic in low light, I just wish they had a voltage display on the OSD to show battery level.

    Looks like an interesting camera. The view angle is too narrow for me, but perhaps with a different lens this could be a good freestyle camera.

      Me too. Not sure why they've shipped it with a 2.8mm lens. That's the sort of stuff I was using 12 years ago, but I'll have another lens ready when I fly with it

    Hello and thank you for your review so far.
    Is there a way to change the settings without the osd board?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před 3 měsíci +1

      If you use Betaflight, there's a feature called Camera Control, where you can use a UART to connect to the OSD pins of the camera and do things that way

    Nice Video! One question, is everything included in the box so that I don't have to buy anything extra and just connect it to my Eachine goggles 800dm and can I run this camera with the nightvison effect on my goggles or do I need some sort of special goggles? Thank you very much!

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před měsícem

      The camera is just a camera - you'll need to connect it to a VTX in order to use it with your goggles. The nightvision is a camera thing, so you'll be able to use that

    Might want to turn the Image Enhance function off and retest the B&W night mode, the smear looks like blur from adding frames together, the way security cameras do, to add the luminance and make a brighter image.

      Ok - two things to try there, including 3NDR messing

    Can't beat a Ratel IMO....Agree about the Lens, way too narrow field of view....Please stop using those HD zero Goggles.....🤔😳😳🇬🇧

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před 3 měsíci

      Why - what's up with the HDZero goggles?

    • @EnglishTurbines

      @@CurryKitten The DVR recording looked terrible....I assume you're using the Rapidfire RX module?...Seen you do way better on your Dom's?....🤔

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před 3 měsíci +2

      In previous footage, the HDZero DVR has done a job on par with the PowerPlay DVR I use in the Doms (both using the RapidFIRE). So either camera is weird - or something else. I'd hope to take a quad with the original Ratel when I get to part 2, so I can compare directly

    • @EnglishTurbines
      @EnglishTurbines Před 3 měsíci

      @@CurryKitten I suggest using the external Powerplay DVR and both Goggles as a comparison. A Ratel is better than this IMO. I appreciate it's grey wet UK right now....ugh😳🤮
