@@dantefromdevilmaycry9857 If I had to guess, it's that he got the message across by saying all the key words required in a sentence but missed everything else in-between. The speaking style back then (and in formal style nowadays) is that you use words for subject and target, as well as grammar in-between as needed, while nowadays casual lets you skip some of them if they're assumed by previous context.
So yeah, in present-day times, it would pass as proper casual Japanese but back then it might have come off as broken.

Fuji's character is just likeable in both the 2024 and 1980 shows which shows how WELLher character was written in my opinion. Plus the actress in this version looks adorable😂

I laughed out loud when Fuji calmly snarked at Lord Toda about "I am the consort of a hatamoto, what would I know," and then followed it up with a subtle implication of who Blackthorne really was interested in. She's gaining more admiration from me, for sure.

@@sonm1na that’s good, in my case Hiroyuki Sanada was that one that made me interested but Moeka Hoshi kept me hooked. (Mostly cause she looks a little bit like my ex who the relationship ended due to distance) but she’s a great character who people can emphasise. Honestly since they’re kinda deviating from the book I wish they flesh out more Fuji make her a much more important character.

Just curious, I have never heard of or seen anyone who left birds of any kind to "dry age". I don't think dry aging birds is safe. But as I am from Asia myself, maybe we never do this, but Westerners do? But honestly, in a global internet world we live in today, never heard anyone dry aging birds. But I do know that in my country, there are places that does smoke ducks. Never heard of smoked chicken or other birds but I guess it is probably plausible to do it.

He is trying to age/cure the bird. The decaying process will make skinning easier and tenderize the gamey meat. Preparing the bird right away would make the meat tough because of rigor mortis. But I don’t think John have enough knowledge in this area because somehow the bird decay really fast and there are a lot of flies. Maybe it is due to the humidity and different in environments (including insects) between the Japanese fishing village he currently is in and back in England.

How do you prepare pheasant by letting it rot?
Bizarre revolting 17th century Limey Brit eating habits.
You can look it up, there is an old practice where you let it lay there for a few days in cool temperatures for the meat to tenderize itself, and then you get rid of the bad smell with Salt and Herbs.
In Southern China, they prep Fish and Shrimps this way too. They let it rot first and then Salt the Fish or Shrimp AFTER. It smells horrible to someone who never experienced it, but people from those regions think it taste good and likes the texture of the meat.
I believe the Scandanavian countries also do this too. There was a Gordan Ramsay episode he tried Rotten Shark meat in Norway or Sweden. It was suppose to be a delicacy to the Native, but Gordon Ramsay Puked after he gave it a bite.
The Taste is going to be hard for you to Imagine if you never experience any foods like this.

It was said to improve the flavor. The Shogun TV series takes place before the Edo period, which means the only sushi the characters would've enjoyed was funazushi, a dish that is quite different from modern sashimi and sushi.

Before there was a John Blackthorne, Hatamoto, in feudal Japan there was the Samurai Yasuke. Yasuke, born in Mozambique, was a former slave who gained employment as a bodyguard to an Italian jesuit missionary. They traveled to Japan in 1579 where Yasuke lietrally beame a celebraty with his social charm and stature. Eventually Yasuke gained employment as a sword bearer for the Daimyo.
I believe Yasuke story will make an awesome movie.

@@Gadget-Walkmen Game birds such as pheasant often need to be aged for a number of days (about a week tops) in order for the meat to become tender. It stinks but it's necessary to get the right flavour.

HE, blackthorne, confused the bird with an english looking bird which you can maintain by keeping the blood intact by hanging which doesnt make it "rot". This bird however did rot, and he didnt anticipate it. Hunter usually in britain did what he did when they have extra birds- this works with the right bird, not the one he got.
