RAM 1500 MAX Towing Capacity (10,600 lbs) | Can You Pull a Fifth Wheel Camper Trailer ?

  • Today we are discussing if my RAM 1500 with the 5.7 liter Hemi has the towing capacity to pull a mid sized fifth wheel camper trailer safely. The dry weight of the fifth is 7100 pounds so you would think My ram 1500 could tow it easily. but as I discuss in the video my truck isn't rated at the max 10,600 lbs but instead 8,000 lbs
    The max tow rating of your pick-up truck is usually always based upon how it is spec'd out. so althought the 4th gen ram is marketed at 10,600 lbs, as my truck sits it's true tow rating is 8,000 lbs
    this is also true for payload rating, ram claims for the 4th gen 1500 that it's max payload is 1,880 lbs. but for my truck is only 1,570lbs. so be careful with that.
    Next I talk about why my ram can't tow this fifth wheel without being over loaded and it's to do with a payload and GVWR issue. these 1500 trucks are not rated with very high payloads and a fifth wheel camper trailer by design is going to put more of it's overall weight into the truck then a traditional ball hitch would. meaning that my truck as it sits could not tow a 7,100 lbs fifth wheel trailer.
    If I was in a pitch and had to tow this thing 15km up the road would it hurt anything? probably not. But if I was going to be towing this trailer regularly for long distances I would not want to use my RAM 1500. you would probably be best with a 2500 that can deal with the added payload much better.
    Anyways I hope you guys liked the video!

    2001 Ram 1500. Has about 150k miles and on its second transmission. Even with OD locked out and aux transmission cooler installed it still sends a temp light towing a 5k pound trailer uphill on major grades. The key seems to be keeping the engine reved upwards of 2500-3k rpm to keep the fluid from the cooler going on mtn passes.

    I have a mild cam and lifter kit on my 2019 ram 1500, injectors and fuel pump and a simple re gear we towed a 5th with no issues right above that towing capacity in the video. I could get it right under a 1900-2100 rpm’s going 75. Now yes I spent around that time 2400$ for the whole parts in total. I now have a 2500 powerwagon for my 5th wheel. I turned my 19 ram into a pre runner with dirt kings race kit. But it can be done! Now say stock internalls and just a re gear can get it done no issues. Although breaks were my biggest flaw!

      @rsd3273 Před 2 lety

      Along with the rehear I did truss the rear axle and put chromoly shafts. I had plans for the pre runner build and was saving for the power wagon 2020. I believe what kept my rear end fine was the shafts, bearings, and truss upgrade. Now I did hit sand a lot and I did break a 2 sets of CV axles and drive shafts. And yeah I was easy on it lol.

  • @tp8694
    @tp8694 Před 2 lety

    I have a 17’ ram 1500, crew cab, short box, 4x4, 8 spd hemi w/3.92. Door sticker says 1500 lbs payload. Purchased it new and I’ve got about 100,000 kms on the truck.
    I’ve added rear timbrens, tuftruck +50% cap increase hd coil springs in the rear with a hell wig adjustable sway bar, front hd 30% cap increase coils over Bilsteins. Went to a smaller 18” rim with a LT275/70r18 tire (truck came from the factory with 20” rims).
    This is probably the best set up I could put together for this class truck and it made a massive difference.
    With that being said I tow 8000 lbs regularly in an enclosed tandem axle trailer with about 10-12% tongue weight. I estimate I am slightly over my payload with tools, passengers etc but not by much and this towing weight is the sweet spot for this truck and the way I have it set up. I have (for a very short distance) pulled a flat deck with a small skid steer and roller (about 14,000lbs) with it and it does it but the truck won’t last very long hauling that kind of weight. Your biggest limiting factor I think over 8000lbs is going to be brakes and wear and tear on the truck.
    If you ask me, from my experience, to tow reliably and safely, the sweet spot for this truck with all the right factory options and a few aftermarket aids is 8,000lbs. At this weight the truck should pull safely and should be reliable without over working the truck. And if you really want it to last, regardless of rams, “lifetime oil”,change your tranny and diff oil if you’re towing heavy.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Před 2 lety

      those 3.92 gears probably make a huge difference. I have 3.21 gears and I had a 5,500 lbs trailer and pulled it over the mountains and my truck was struggling. like with my foot to the floor it wouldn't go past 110km/h on any decent incline.
      Have you heard about putting air bags in the middle of your rear coils? I had a co-worker do it on his Ram for towing his trailer and he said it made a huge difference. for about 200 bucks you can find them and they only need to run at about 15-30 psi depending on the load. no compressor or anything needed and you can even pump them up with a bike pump. I thought that would be a really cool option for these trucks. obviously the heavy duty coils probably do the trick but I was curious if you explored that idea?

    • @tp8694
      @tp8694 Před 2 lety

      @@TheGettyAdventures yeah the 3.92 is the primary here. When I was shopping for the truck the first thing I was looking for was hemi with the 3.92 otherwise I was walking away. I knew I was going to be towing a lot. I’ve never driven the 3.21 or the 3.55 but I can only imagine they wouldn’t do well with anything over 5k lbs especially on long climbs. I have 2 super duties, one is a 2010 with a 5.4 v8 and 4.10 gears (5 spd auto) and the other is a 2021 with the 6.2 v8 and 3.73 gears (6spd auto) Although the 6.2 is the way better motor with a lot more power and torque, the 5.4 with the 4.10 pulls better than the 6.2 with the 3.73. What I’m getting at is gearing is crucial despite power outputs. The only reason I bought the 2021 with 3.73’s (I was looking for 4.30’s) was because of the truck shortage. I really didn’t have a choice.
      It’s sucks you can’t do a gear swap on the ram because of that front diff (I mean, you could but I can’t imagine it would be feasible).
      I’ve never used airbags but I know a bunch of people who swear by them. I just don’t want issues with air leaks and lines rotting out etc (I live in Toronto, we love our salt). The ride isn’t much harsher with the springs I added, it’s noticeable but it’s NOT like riding in a 3/4 ton leaf sprung truck. And I love timbrens, zero maintenance, they last forever and they’re a local Ontario company with wicked customer service. And when you’re loaded with weight the truck rides like a Cadillac on them. The only time you feel them unloaded is if you hit a good bump and you make contact but it isn’t too bad.
      If you’re towing a lot, I’d suggest you sell it and find one with a 3.92 gear set.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Před 3 lety

      The fifth gens must because their payload ratings are pretty significantly higher. With normal driving my truck does a pretty good job almost completely eliminating that lateral movement but when I tow it does seem to be exaggerated.
      Now that could just be me paying more attention to the ride of truck with a trailer hooked up but it does feel like there is some lateral movement increase with a load present.

    You can save a bit of time by looking on those weight charts for the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). Run your truck over a CAT Scale (with the usual occupants, fuel and cargo), subtract the weight of your truck from the GCWR and that's what you can tow. The result of that little math problem will give you a much smaller number than the so-called "towing capacity" or maximum trailer weight. Of course this is a separate limitation from the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) which you can easily exceed with the hitch weight of a fifth wheel.

      There are Reese 5th wheel systems designed for both the 6.5’ and the 5.5’ Rams of that generation. This issue is as the OP eluded to is the payload of the truck otherwise referred to as the pin weight just isn’t workable with a lot of the 5th wheels out there. TBH if your looking at any 5th wheel your better off getting a 3/4 truck. Your options are way better with a 3/4 ton. If you don’t want a 3/4 ton then you want to look primarily at travel trailers.

      Honestly, I've been impressed. the only issues I would say is the 5.7's are known for lifter issues (hemi tick) and leaking manifolds. with the 2010 trucks you'll most likely have a 6 speed transmission (I have the 8 speed) and those have been known to fail from time to time. but all in all they aren't bad trucks.

    You don't understand insurance. If something bad happens, the insurance company can't deny the claim because you did something stupid like overloading your truck or driving through a stop sign. Covering people's stupid decisions is mostly what insurance is for. However, they may conclude that you are too great a risk and jack up your premiums or cancel your policy after that.

    Honestly, it doesn't matter what truck anyone has i.e. (Ford, Chevy, Ram, or whatever). Everyone will bust payload 99% of the time before they touch their towing cap. Some are ignorant of the significance and dangers of payload. BRAKES are also extremely important. Even if the trailer is within your ratings; it is not what you tow, but what you can STOP. If you have any significant weight, you can very easily burn up your brakes if you are overloaded and then you have no brakes and then you are just along for the ride. Payload is the most single number that people need to pay attention to. Towing cap is a far second. Plus, the higher the trim package on your truck; the lower the payload will be. Safe travels for all.

Any trailer over 3000-lbs must have brakes on all wheels in most states, but laws do vary. ... Often the gross weight of any such trailer without brakes is not to exceed 40% of the gross weight of the towing vehicle. Trailer brakes should be selected based on the axle weight rating. • @jerrytucker9507

I have seen far too many wrecks of people towing way outside their rating. And it always has been the ones who knew better. My daddy did it, my friend did it; yeah, they were lucky; however, luck does run out. Just for the sake of others around you just tow safely and stay within your rating.
