    Just bought this cage 8 months after the video came out. I want anyone considering this cage to know they have improved the design! The one I received has a sleeker front frame (cute mushrooms are gone but more viewing space) and the issue with the top support piece has been fixed. Lid settles correctly. It does not feel flimsy once assembled. Hope this helps anyone trying decide and to save a few $$$ over a Niteangel. I prefer having access from the front which initially sold me. Pleasantly surprised they upgraded the design!

      I bought the cage and am about set it up for the first time and i'll list some pros and cons I immediately notice:
      Pros:
      1. its really big!
      2. the front door is fairly secure when closed
      3. it can fit 8 inches of bedding
      4. it came with 3 extra rubber bands in case they break
      Cons:
      1. if you wobble the sides of the cage its pretty wobbly
      2. at the bottom theres tiny gaps they could start chewing (i might silicone them so he cant escape)
      3. ventilation isnt the best
      4. some hamsters could chew the hinges of the front door but mine isnt a big chewer so that isnt really a problem

    My only worry with these enclosures is lack of ventillation/humidity buildup, since the holes there don't look nearly big enough to provide proper air circulation. I'd be half tempted to cut out the lid and replace it with mesh lol. The front door also looks very unsafe, I can definitely see hamsters twisting the knobs from the inside and escaping.
    Also, do you think you could do a review on DIY enclosures? I.e. the detolf, linnmon, billy bookcase, pax - basically any enclosure that can be bought from IKEA lol. It'd be cool to see you do a review of some sort on those.

    i actually have this enclosure for my winter white calcifer! It definitely looked a little flimsy when making it, but after filling it up and using it for months it’s been great! Instead of using the door on the front i just remove the top when i need to get into the enclosure that way i can pack more bedding up the front entrance. Overall i really like it, i do wish it felt more sturdy though.

  • @PetConnectionInternational
    @PetConnectionInternational Před 2 lety +26

    I absolutely love the design for the top and front, it's adorable 🥰 it does look really fragile though, I'd be really worried about it breaking and/or getting chewed. But at least companies are making an effort to make better enclosures, we're moving in the right direction! 🙂

  • @xpandorasboxx
    @xpandorasboxx Před 2 lety +39

    I personally don't really like either, the copycat or the niteangel. They just look.. so, so flimsy. A thicker, sturdier wood and not using rubber bands would be so much better. Why not just use some screws? If it's built correctly, and the screw areas were very clearly marked / predrilled, nothing is going to be accessible for nibbles. I'd just be afraid something would pop off and the whole thing collapsing while a hamham is in there. Hopefully we can get more, sturdier cages being made and sold

    • @indigoeye3874
      @indigoeye3874 Před 2 lety +2

      I definitely agree that they look really flimsy. I feel like these would be great for taking your hamster with you on a holiday, or for a cottage, basically a temporary easily movable enclosure. But at home? A good sturdy wooden enclosure makes me feel much safer.

    • @kikyamart8749
      @kikyamart8749 Před 2 lety +7

      I like my niteangels, I have three of them. I wouldn't call them flimsy, especially when built. My hamsters love them and they are so spacious. There's really nothing better available in the US.

    • @yolandag8436
      @yolandag8436 Před 2 lety +3

      The niteangel looks flimsy but is not. Once I placed the silicone bands they never snapped even when I moved the cage. I had my hamster in one for a bout a year and never had issues with it. Even now that im not using it, i was to lazy to disassemble so I'm using it like a table for my plants which are heavy and is holding together with all that weight on top of it

    Thanks for another great review! I currently just use 50 gallon bins for my hamsters (and one 75 gallon tank), but I think when I do upgrade I’ll go for the Large size Bigger World (Or the Vista), it just looks higher quality.
    Mostly I love that there are so many good options now available and marketed as hamster cages. Even if I don’t prefer this cage over the Niteangel, it’s certainly better than most other options out there.
    When I got a hamster in July 2020, the only acceptable cages you could buy were the Prevue 528 and the SUPER Kaytee Habitat (which isn’t that great). This is a huge step for us in the US, to have so many options pop up at Amazon listed as a “hamster cage”!
    Hooray for progress!

  • @MsLilly200
    @MsLilly200 Před 2 lety +16

    Why don't companies just make bin cage style enclosures? Like, just a big plastic box, maybe with colourful/patterned edges if they wanna be fancy, and a well ventilated lid.

    • @kikyamart8749
      @kikyamart8749 Před 2 lety +3

      I would guess because it's hard to see through them and most of the time people want to see their hamsters. (People that care more about their enjoyment than the hamsters well being) those kinds of cages don't "look good" and even a clear plastic is distorted.

    • @MsLilly200
      @MsLilly200 Před 2 lety

      @@kikyamart8749 I feel like clear bins aren't all that hard to see through though. Just a little bit cloudy. I don't have a hamster myself, and thus no bin cage, but I do have plastic bins for storage.
      Plus if you wanna see into the bin in HD you can just take the top off.
      Also I've seen some people make a cutout in the side of the bin and cover that with wire. For I assume more ventilation and also better visibility.
      I'm sure companies could do the same, or even use some other, more see through material. Like, whatever plastic-like stuff the cage in this video used.

    • @kikyamart8749
      @kikyamart8749 Před 2 lety +3

      @@MsLilly200 my point is they don't look like something people would spend money on. And I did have a bin cage. Also solid plastic bin is large and bulky, compared to a critter trail or nite angel that folds up. Takes up room on a store shelf compared to a compact box.

    • @MsLilly200
      @MsLilly200 Před 2 lety

      @@kikyamart8749 The taking-up-room point is very valid.
      But as for appearance... I feel like actual companies could make really nice and professional looking bins fairly easily? Like, all a bin is, is a plastic box. I'm sure they could make specific versions that look more like a tank/cage and less like a storage bin, while still keeping production costs the same.
      And then they could do stuff like paint the lid, bottom and edges, or provide cute/fun stickers, to make it more marketable.

    When I was about 5 to 6 my parents were always with me when I was with my hamster Panda. They did not let me with him alone. We got him a pretty good size cage although we didn't know much only from what our pet store told us. Unfortunately the tubes ended up hurting him and he passed in them he lasted a year. I was horrified and blamed my 6 years old self that I did wrong my parents were kinda angry at the advice we were given. Many years later we got gerbils and we did our own research they lived for about 6-8 years. We didn't want to make mistakes like we did with Panda and take only advice from a store. They were nice but they didn't actually own hammies or small pets they were told it was appropriate for them. 😞💔
    Mind you I am now 24 and would love a hammy in the future again but doing many research as I do for my reptiles. I'm sure you must have heard of them but these cages all remind me of the LaoLa Nagarium from RodiPet! It's been one of my dream enclosures for a few years now but it's pretty expensive to ship to Canada.
    I know NiteAngel recently came out with the enclosure that has a sort of angled lid that looks pretty neat. Interestingly enough you can actually fairly easily find these sorts of enclosures on aliexpress sometimes. They're all super expensive because I imagine the shipping and regulations they have to go through must be a pain in the rear.

    I have the medium Niteangel for my Russian Dwarf, Little Man. I love the Niteangel enclosure! I love everything I've gotten from Niteangel. I feel Niteangel is a great quality brand. Just from what I've seen of the copy cat enclosure while you were assembling it, it seems flimsy and doest seem to be the same quality as Niteangel. Even though the copy cat has the front opening which is handy, but what I don't like about it is it,s not as clean of a front view, it will hinder how much bedding you can put in it, and I would be afraid of the plastic breaking after repeated use. Also, I would word about a hamster chewing it since it's not just one flat piece. I agree with you about some of the openings on the top being too big and the openings on the side could be a start of chewing. I like the plastic sheet Niteangel includes for the bottom. Thank you for doing a comparison of the two enclosures! 😁💕🐹 And thank you for educating for the proper care of these tiny friends!

  • @thesweetlifeexperience5076

    Thanks for your Channel. I just recently purchased a hamster for my son who begged me for one. I had dreaded memories of my hamster bc my hamster was super aggressive and I didn’t understand it bc I took really good care of her. Didn’t realize 17 years ago that my cage was way tooooo small.
    I took your advice and my dwarf hamster is now in a 648sq reptile enclosure and although he is shy and a little afraid of humans, he is not aggressive. We’ve had him for a week so working with him little by little to bond. It’s definitely a family lesson and teaching my kids how to properly tame him. I also don’t let my kids clean the cage bc I don’t want them disturbing him. I’ve decided to take on that responsibility bc it’s a lot of work and not like a dog.

    The only thing I dislike about the solid lids is how they horribly block light from getting into the enclosure. Natural light is still important and the solid lids make that a real problem. I am half tempted to saw out the two sides of my Niteangel lid where they have the air holes and then just cover the inside of the entire top with a wire mesh. It would allow for much better air circulation and allow a lot of natural light to enter the enclosure.
    As far as the seams inside the enclosure allowing for urine or debris to seep through, I used a "match-n-patch" tape usually used to hide scratches etc on furniture or floors to seal off all the inside seams. The tape is very strong, waterproof, and I got it in a color that was very close to the color of the enclosure so it doesn't stand out. So far my gerbils have not bothered the tape at all...likely because they have plenty of other things to chew on and be active with instead. I can't speak for mice or female syrians, though. I also used that tape on the outside to reinforce the sides a bit to decrease stress on the silicone rings and add a bit more strength to the overall enclosure and it seems to have worked quite well.

    Hi Munchie! I've recently started watching your channel even though I don't currently own a hamster or a mouse myself, and it's been really informative and entertaining! I love your energy and the work you're doing to educate people :)
    I do have a question for you as a rescuer- Would you ever consider rehoming or adopting out some of your rescues to first-time owners?
    I know some of them have specialized health issues and probably need certain care from an experienced owner, but otherwise would you be against rehoming to a first-time keeper? (As long as they had a suitable enclosure ofc)
    I've never had a small mammal before, I mostly keep fish, but gerbils are really fascinating to me, and if I were to get them in the future I would much rather adopt out from a rescue/shelter, rather than buy from a pet store or even a reputable breeder.
    I'd love to get your perspective on it as someone who runs a shelter ^^

That said, there's nothing stopping someone once it's all assemble to add a animal safe silicon caulking to all the seams to add to stability and to prevent the beding and waste from falling out of the enclosure.

    he came in the critter trail starter kit thing,He is around 6 months and he was for free. when we picked him up his cage smelled so bad.it smelled like it had not been clean in a couple of week.(on the way home he did not come out of the tube part😟)he was also eating the oxbow brand of food.His wheel was so small so took it out .(they also bought that 4.5 in kaytee wheel. i dont know why.i also put about 4 inches of bedding till it was over flowing a little.( a little mess was so worth his happens) He is getting a 40 gallon breeder with about 10 inches of bedding.😀 i havent gotten him the wheel yet but workig on it.(iam getting the night angle 11.8 inch wheel.)moving him into his new cage later tonight. hope he likes it.(hisfood will also gradullay change to sunburst and the rat and mouse pettles.

    I actually like that niteangle does not have a front opening. Bc front openings does limit the amount of bedding you can put, bc it has to be low enough so it does not flood out when you open it.

    I just purchased this enclosure myself and ended up with a few issues. The support bar in the front was damaged in shipping and it cracked in half when I was assembling the enclosure. I do have to say that the customer service of this company is good. I don’t know if I’ll keep this one or return it yet. It will take some work to solidify it. I know Niteangel has a front opening enclosure available in other countries, but was told by Niteangel on Amazon that it wouldn’t be available in the US this year. I am hoping they offer it as I’d like to purchase it.
    Munchie - in your opinion, which is more sturdy? The Mewoofun or the Niteangel? I’m trying to decide it I want to return the Mewoofun and get the new Niteangel Oblique Opening enclosure.

    I don't own a hamster currently, but I'm actually thinking about maybe getting this for my bearded dragon & just putting a different lid on it :o I'll have to check out the measurements more first. but it's a really good price for what looks like a pretty light enclosure as opposed to the 50lb monstrosity that I use currently that almost killed me to get upstairs on my own (as I am a very small creature xD )

  • @Masterjedi688
    @Masterjedi688 Před 2 lety

    @Munchie's Place, I think you should reach out to Niteangel or Mewoofun and tell them in the future when they make these hamster enclosures, make them sturdier and the material slightly thicker. That support beam should not be so bendy. That beam needs to be sturdier and thicker also. The floor and walls of the enclosure should be able to withstand wetness/ when cleaning and the enclosures should not let any bedding or food fall out from the bottom or from wherever. Extra bands should be included also in case a band breaks. Also have them make it chew proof also an enclosure that is a bit longer and higher with the front opening higher up so that extra bedding if needed or wanted can be added.

    @silversiren7046 Před 2 lety +1

    You forgot to mention that front-opening enclosures are better for small animals, Munchie, since they'd usually be preyed upon from above! This is true for a lot of reptilian species as well and I actually think some of the larger reptile enclosures (Like viv exotic or Exo Terra) could be great for hamsters as well with a little modification.

    I was wondering if you could do a review on PawHut Wooden Hamster Cage with Platforms Hideouts & Swings, 31" L x 16" W x 17" H Because I feel like that cage is trying to model that kind of cage but I noticed that it also has a lot of built-in hides and shelves that the hamster might like as well so I thought it would be interesting to get a review on it

    ik this video is over a year old now but i gotta say it somewhere lmao. I was stuck between getting the newer and improved version of this cage pr the bucatstate 100 but i’m choosing this because of multiple reasons, there are a lot of dbeates about whether the bucatstate is actually worth it for the price and as she mentioned in the video she doesn’t want a hamster to chew the holes at the side, however there would be more of a problem with chewing with the bucatstate rather than the mewoo cage soo yeah

    My cage is very similar to this and my only pet peeve is that the front opening is not secure at all. The bottom corners don’t have those circular stoppers and it’s made with flimsy plastic. My hamster can easily push the corners open and escape or my cat can slide her paw in, I had to add extra stoppers on it to keep it secure.

I clean his cage very often but there is almost constantly a smell. I love my mouse, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll probably not get another once he goes. 😂 I’ve noticed that aspen bedding has better odor control than regular fluffy bedding though!

Why do they seem to have something against putting things together with screws like every other wood thing? Just make the edges a thicker wood, it's not that hard! Argh. Good size, cute design on the top, but it seems flimsy and why are the holes so big? Is my overall opinion.
