    Being a 3D artist and graphic designer for videogames in the late 90's must have been hella fun. Now its rocket science... You just move a ton of sliders around and connect nodes. Sure it looks realistic. But more love went into the textures back then. When did the proccess change? Around mid 2000s when they introduced bump maps?

    • @Summmer85
      @Summmer85  Před 2 měsíci +1

    • @5ld734
      @5ld734 Před měsícem

      I think the shift happened around 2014, a lot of games really cranked up the use of temporal anti-aliasing which made everything look muddy imo, they also stopped relying so much on trim-sheets and began to make more assets via handpainting (for large assets or assets important to the scene) or blending PBR materials (seamless texture for each part of the house and blend dirt effects onto it).
      I much prefer the look of environments in older games, they often looked really nice and crispy, and the way the UVs were done was super charming. It also added a really nice sense of cohesion since the trimsheet textures were often taken in the same lighting, same style etc, while using many PBR materials often looks a bit uncanny, as if the lighting or scale of each seamless texture was slightly off between the different materials.
      I think GTA V has to have my favorite graphics of any game, its very crisp and the textures are super well done, non-muddy and easily readable, while still benefiting from modern graphics effects, you can tell they put a lot of effort into the look of that game.

      @Summmer85  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I've been practicing in Blender for about two years, but intermittently. From the very beginning I use Blender 3.0 and have not updated. I think that it doesn’t really matter which version to use, especially for retro graphics.Most likely, a "bad render" result depends not on the version, but on the settings.

      Hi, glad you like it and thank you for your question! I used the mouse almost everywhere in this project. Only for the armchair I used a graphics tablet.
      For example, I have another video where I create Shadow Man character. There I only use a graphic tablet for the texturing.

  • @Chlorzy
    @Chlorzy Před 2 měsíci +2

    When you're texture painting the arm chair I see that you have the selected paint mask on. When I enable that it makes everything except the selected faces turn mostly white. I'd like to be able to see the proper colors of everything else while I have that mask enabled. How do I do that? I tried googling and eventually found an answer that was pretty much "blender doesnt have the option to change the opacity of that mask" but from this video it seems there must be a way.
    These look amazing by the way, very helpful for something I'm working on.

    • @Summmer85
      @Summmer85  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank, glad you like it. I don't really understand what exactly you mean. I usually try to make the textures in maximum size 256 x 256 px. But if the object is small, then less is possible. For example, a cactus has a texture 64 x 64 px.

    could you please explain how you went about texturing on the pot at 14:20? I tried to follow along but it seems I'm missing something. I can draw on an object if I use Single Image in the texture slot, but no matter what the resolution is the paint I apply is far too bold and harsh, not as smooth as yours. mine is like I'm using mspaint, while yours is more like a photoshop brush when you add the extra dark grey

    • @Summmer85
      @Summmer85  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi, I use graphic tablet for texture painting. May be you if use mouse it will find be difficult to achieve a soft brush. And another moment, even with a tablet, it seems to me that it is not entirely easy to achieve maximum softness, when compared, for example, with Photoshop. Therefore, when painting, I often pick intermediate color (pressing double S to pick a color) and thus try to achieve softness. Hope this helps you.
