Cymbalta (Duloxetine): What are the Side Effects? Watch Before You Start!

- Cymbalta or Duloxetine is a medication that is used to treat mainly Depression and Anxiety but also is used to treat Fibromyalgia, Diabetic and other types of Neuropathy, Joint pain and even Hot Flashes related to menopause. Get a doctors perspective on how this mediation can help you and what to expect while taking it. You'll learn about both common and some of the more rare side effects that you should watch out for.
Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is in the family of medications called Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). They influence the amount of Serotonin and Norepinephrine that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Those who are going through anxiety you may have symptoms such as sudden and unexplained onset of a rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, pain in your chest, fear of dying, numbness and tingling throughout your body or just a generalized feeling of anxiousness all the time that you just can’t explain.
If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor. We will discuss more concerning side effects such as serotonin syndrome as well.

whats frustrating about these medications is how long you need to take just to see if they help. then its trying different ones if they dont work and going through the same process. that kind of feels helpless and overwhelming to think about.

I started taking this about a year ago for neuropathic pain that was driving me nuts. It took about a week to start working and was life altering. Never had I felt such a positive effect from any medication. Hopefully more people will have the same positive effect when they learn about this drug.
started 3 days ago for depression hoping it works
Sure hope it helps with my trigeminal neuralgia.
I just got an rx for this for nerve pain in my hips, but I've heard so many bad things, glad to hear it helped you
Nerve pain definitely helps me!!
It does nothing to heal your condition, it only masks it while making things worse. Good luck with your new addiction.
I have been on 60mg for almost a year now and it has definitely helped my neuropathy but the biggest benefit has been in battling depression. I was to the point that I was in a constant daily rage at everyone and everything in my life. I have been married over forty years but my wife said she would have no choice but to move out because of my constant anger. I still have depressive days but taking this med has been the best thing I could have ever done.
did it increase your appetite??

I took this medicine during the peak period of Fibromyalgia pain. Thank god, It is over now. These pain medications never leave your system. I read a report - 3D holistic report which opened my eyes. Holistic techniques are the way to go and they are way more powerful than we imagined. Our body is extremely powerful and intelligent, we seem to have forgotten this. Do read 3D holistic report if you are suffering from any chronic conditions. I hope you keep trying till you heal. Fight to heal.
I have never heard of 3 d holistic reports.. Can you explain where I should start? I'd love to come off this med. I am feeling very sick after missing just 3 pills.. but have been on it for years

I felt my anxiety and depression beginning to lessen the very first day of taking duloxetine, although the first pill made me vomit violently. Fortunately that didn't happen the subsequent days. I was very surprised it has worked so fast as anti-depressants usually take a longer time to have an effect. I've only taken duloxetine for 4 days now but I'm already feeling so much better. No more racing thought or crippling anxiety. I actually want to live again!
I was anxious about starting duloxetine after reading how horrible experiences people have had with it. But to, so far, this med has been a life saver. Just goes to show that people are different and you can't really know if the med suits you until you try. The only negative side-effect beside the first day vomiting has been trouble sleeping. I hope that it will dissipate as time goes by.
How are you doing now? I'm on week 4 and am still sooo nervous about the horror stories
@@daltonliles6161 I'm doing great! It's been almost three weeks since I started taking duloxetine. All of the side effects I experienced in the beginning have gone away and so has my depression and most of my anxiety. I feel like a normal human being again. To me duloxetine has been a lifesaver!

Very good information. Thank you very much. I was hesitant to take Cymbalta thinking of its side effects. This has really helped. Thanks again 😊
You explained the side effects better than my doc. I now realize I've experienced the serotonin syndrome so I will be discussing this with my doc
I totally agree.
Why didn’t he mention that if you’ve been taking Cymbalta for a long time, you can’t really ever wean yourself off of it. The withdrawal side effects are awful.
Your doctor should warn you because they know about it.
This information should be passed on so that people can decide if they want to start this medication or choose something else.
It's horrible
You can definitely wean after long periods of time but the longer you're on it the longer it takes to wean..up to 2yrs in some cases.
There are ways to get off of it, you need to go to a physicist’s that specialties these medications. Right now I’m taking this to get off Effexor.

Thank you Dr. Great info with great delivery! I have been taking Cymbalta for 3 months now. At first, it made me feel a little sluggish and I had that medicated feeling on 30mg for the first two weeks, but by week 4 was feeling a lot better mentally and not feeling medicated. After a month I was ready to go up to 60 mg once a day. Again, with the upgrade, I had a little of the tired medicated feeling first week or two and by week 4 was feeling again better with no dry mouth or that sleepy medicated feeling. The only side effect I have had has been increased sweating which I never had a problem with before, but it only when it is really hot or I am exercising or working hard physically, don't love that, but so worth it because of the good results I have had to both my depression and anxiety. Another benefit my Dr. noted was that Duloxetine was a weight neutral anti-depressant drug for most. Today I am sleeping better, in less pain, and have a decently normal mood. I have severe Psoriatic Arthritis so this is a great drug added to my list of the biologics and DMARDS. Thanks again.
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I’m glad that you’ve had great success with this medication. Your story is more typical, it’s common to have some mild symptoms but if you are patient with them and stick with it, it can make a world of difference. Thanks for watching!

Why should I develop a dependence to see if it works? Why do Antidepressants and Gabapentinoids go first in chronic pain when the bottomline of most researches is that they only reduce the ammount of opioids needed (by potentiating their effect which until now was considered dangerous)? Is it less dangerous to get a constant influx of two drugs that don't work in order to take less of a drug that actually works? Isn't that kinda contradictive and doesn't it seem manipulative when they try push 2 or 3 more drugs that have their own severe side effects and cost 10-15 times more when it is a fact that they end up being used concurently in a dangerous fashion which has already caused deaths? Why are opioids/alcohol (a well known gabaergic drug) dangerous but opioids/gabapentinoids aren't? What am I missing here?
I took this for 1 day. My mood felt better. But my heart rate and blood pressure went up. I have stomach pain & lots of diaherra. I also had a brain zap. I called my psychiatrist and he told me to stop taking it. I was only on 20mg. He was surprised I had a reaction on such a low dose.

Hello there. I just came across your channel as I was looking for the side effects of zymbalta as I started taking my first pill today. It was recommended by my diabetes clinician and my family doctor for easing of discomfort from neuropathy. The scary thing is I am also on gabapentin for the time being and if the cymbalta works, hopefully I can get off of the gabapentin and stop being so drowsy. I have had to continue drinking a lot of caffeine just to stay awake from the gabapentin. Does that have any risk when taking zymbalta? Caffeine does not affect me in the anxiety department, only situations that take place with regards to my diabetes such as high glucose numbers, and if I have any pain associated with my neuropathy sometimes I get a little anxious. Please let me know if caffeine is okay. I am out and very physically active every day except for today because I had some stuff to do at home and wanted to stay in my house out of abundance of caution because I did not know if I was going to have any side effects. What a great video. Keep up the good work.

I took 30mg last night for my chronic burning nerve pain. I had depression & anxiety issue in the past so I thought it’s a good idea to take this med. But I woke up with nausea & diarrhea 5 hours later. Nausea & dry mouth were going on for a few hours. I was light headed and it was hard to work. I’m not gonna take it again. I don’t think it’s worth keeping taking for me. My neurologist recommended me to swim. maybe I should try water exercise.
After almost a week I began having horrible diarrhea could this be connected? It's been 3 days of 10-15 trips to the bathroom.
I'm still scared. I took medication once and felt disconnected and I had side effects of ticks. They are permanently with me now. Also I had no ability to enjoy a good sesh with myself. TMI! Took my pleasure away and it took months to regain and I'm still not back to normal.
What medication?
@@wongjuan344, I believe it was Lyrica. It was a anti- seizure one
Antidepressants could cause persistent emotional numbness/anhedonia and sexual dysfunctions after discontinuing meds.

It's a miracle medication for me.
I used Lexapro and it ruined my sex drive and function so now I'm scared to try anything else. I'm currently on wellbutrin and my doc wants to add duloxetine to augment the effects of what I'm currently on. I'm scared because I don't want weight gain or sexual dysfunction and I've seen horrible things in the internet about withdrawal symptoms
For me is kinda good , but somehow anxiety is increased first couple of hours , dont know why
Does niacin have an effect on mood? I feel calm after the flushing goes away.
What about weight gain? Thanks for the video !
Why does the doctor ask me to walk 40 minutes every day? Is a depressed person going to walk every day? What came first, the chicken or the egg? It’s so stupid. I’ve been on it two months and don’t notice any difference in my mood.
Got this tablet today.. 30mg..for pain not depression.. Im abit worried.. Do i take it morning or night.. Also i take codeine and paracetamol.
I'm taking cymbalta and lyrica. I still have arthritis pain. Also one of them gives me bad headaches.
I just started today I feel a bit internally shaky will this go away? Also horrible nausea and upset stomach. I read also it can cause high blood pressure is this common?
I have been subscribed 30 to start for two weeks then onto two doses a day for 60. I am on day two. Yesterday I felt nauseous for about four hours like the beginning of a flu. And today it is affecting all day. Also my driving seemed troublesome as I took some very wide turns today. I was expecting the struggle would not affect my cognitive abilities. Perhaps it is just feeling nauseous that affected my cognitive abilities. I’ve never tried this medication before or I should say medication before for depression anxiety and fibromyalgia.
It starts off that way, but all will go away in 4weeks
hey dr
did u ever heard about losing 24 hours aftar first dose of cymbalta?
i took the pill went to sleep and i lost a day i thout i was asleep for 24 hour but my familiy said i was awake and erational, i dont have any recolctions from that day at all till this day that happend 4 years ego
Is it normal to feel spaced out on these meds? Have felt spaced out on and off for a couple of weeks. It scares me
Some complain of feeling that way. It's not what we are hoping for you. If it isn't improving then you should talk with your doctor about a different option.
Thanks doc
Wish my doctor would have told me the withdrawal issues. Horrible! I was on Cymbalta for 3 months, it was horrible!
I took it once the other day and felt pretty sick- upset stomach. Even woke me up in the middle of the night with abdominal pain. If I take it again, will it make the side effects worse? I suffer from GAD and emetophobia/health anxiety
Just started with this med and noticed a lift in mood and a little less anxiety and worry. We’ll see what happens.
How did it work out?
how would jou feel when jou cant move enymore and lose jour power
This is such an excellent and well explained video. Dr. You explained everything with such kindness and compassion. I was given Duloxetine some type of reaction to in the past. I like how you explained if you need it deprive yourself. Because I'm going through some depression depression and anxiety and I'm hurting myself I'm not trying this. I took one medication my psychiatrist gave me and the first one I talk make me feel really great the first day the second day I took the medicine I was like a zombie. I just laid in the bed and cutting the function only to get up to go to the bathroom so I talked to the doctor and he told me not to take it anymore. If only that medication would have worked like I did the first day I will be happy go lucky. But I'm about to start taking the Cymbalta because I need to feel better not suffer. I'm not going to know how a medication works if I don't give it a try. Thank you so much for this video...✌🏽❤🙏🏽😊
Just got Rx this, thanks Doctor
Anybode noticed palpitations/arrhythmias from cymbalta?
Just started my first dose today of 30 mg. Let me get these first 30 days in. Journaling, exercise and getting back into juicing. See you back in a month!

How long do you have the sweats?
Hi thank you for such an informative video. I would like to withdraw completely from this drug and am down to 30mg. Suffering really bad itching parasthesia. Has anyone experienced this and how king does it last, feel so fed up .
I am going on my first week and I’ve just been sick, noises make me more overly stimulated because I feel like my brain is vibrating, nauseous and shaking, but when I dropped my Klonopin with it I felt better. I’m hoping it helps overall overtime.
This is exactly what’s happening to me my whole body is vibrating in my brain,,I thought it was a pinched nerve
How's it going for you now? Im 2 days in feeling sick as
Are you saying it helped when you took Klonopin with it or made it worse?
The vibration I’m wondering if that’s what I’m experiencing. I have tinitis and lately if there’s no noise my tinitis seems stronger and sounds like a vibrating rain stick in my head.
@@jshillkiller2262 the meds take up to 2 weeks to feel any side affects
Have you ever reviewed the medication Tranzene ?
