    It's the Meissner Effect.
    When you cool a superconductor to a certain point, it 'pushes' away the magnetic field lines from the magnet.
    The magnetic field (from the magnet) then curves around the superconductor and forms kind of a bubble around the superconductor and that is what keeps it in place; levitating.

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 Před 7 lety +38

      Just a slight fix, and I hope you don't mind - you don't cool a superconductor - superconductor is created by cooling certain things to a certain temperature. So you don't take a superconductor, cool it, and then it has certain properties, you take some matter, cool it, then you get your superconductor.
      It is a slight fix, but very important in scientific terms.
      Also, there is a huge strive to create some alloy that would have superconductor capabilities on room temperature - that would be a revolution in technology on the scale semiconductors were that brought about the whole information age.

    Quantum mechanics is brilliant, because it's by far the most counter intuitive branch of the sciences; you're basically throwing out almost everything you know about the natural world when you explore the world of the infinitesimally minute.

      Which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone really. Extrapolation to larger structures or smaller structures often give different results/effects/behaviour. That's even so in the science of electricity, networking, physics, etc. You don't even need to go to quantum level for that. The only difference is that Q is just very, very strange.

    This was really interesting. Stephen's questions were on point (even if scripted).
    Also Stephen looks like an older version of Justin Theroux.

    He didn’t explain the other half of the experiment that makes it reality braking. Short explanation: when particles are hot through the slits they are projected at the wall as several lines instead of the normal two this was done under normal conditions. Second test was setting a molecular observing camera on the other side of the wall to observe the particles coming out of the other side. After setting the camera there were only two lines. If you are not understanding the concept I’ll put it this way: when you shoot particles through two slits without observing the particles themselves they act as waves when you shoot them while observing them they act as particles. That means particles/reality changes when observe it.
