It always felt like everyone was obligated to impress Letterman, he wasn't actually that entertaining himself, he is a legend don't get me wrong but he's of his time. And Carson just helped create the format, people remember his regular guests more than him.

The WGA strike took out production for every prime time show, and this was before the internet became big and streaming services became a thing. Talk shows had to go on but they didn't hire any new writers bc of the strike so a lot of content produced during these couple of months wasn't as structured and a lot more loose. As a result, the strike forced Conan, Colbert, and Jon to create amazing comedy out of nothing. I wish Conan got to do more work w/ Jon and Colbert. He's been on Colbert's show a couple of times and both Jon and Colbert had cameos when Conan visited NYC a decade ago but those guys working in the same city could've produced a good amount of comedy chaos if Conan had never moved to L.A.
This bit and the fact that Jon Oliver was the lone correspondent on the daily show are the two things I remember about this time. Oliver couldn't strike because he was on a worker visa at the time.
Was in high school when this happened, but I wish I was just a little bit older because I didn't appreciate Conan nearly as much as I do now in my 30's.
