    I know fans already know this but, for the 10%, back when NBC cut his show for Leno, his staff was basically laid off. Conan then for almost a year, paid his staff out of his own pocket, and then paid the staff that came with him to LA, their moving expenses, and living expenses until the show started and they're back on TBS payroll.
    This alone says a lot about Conan's character and relationship with his staff. Fallon, Kimmel, etc, may just be themselves and their staff, but Conan and his people are one. Thank you, Coco.

    The writer's strike era of Conan was likely the best late night television ever. Dude is way funnier off the cuff than he is scripted. Jay Leno at that same time in every joke, was implying people were drunkards, drug users, sexually promiscuous, or made jokes/innuendo about female anatomy. While Jay proved his limited comedic abilities, Conan was proving his genius and redefining what late night television could be. It's kinda ironic that a guy riding a zipline through his audience night after night is more mature than the guy who cheated him out of a job, but that's the reality of things. I'd love to see a documentary on Conan and his handling of the writer's strike, a montage segment of Leno saying the same punchlines for different set ups would be hilarious in this context.

    • @gallery7596
      @gallery7596 Před 4 měsíci +1

      However, it's well documented in Bill Carter's excellent book "The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early & Television Went Insane"" that Jay's "see ya in 5 years" comment was the result of *NBC's* prodding. Jay knew nothing of Conan's deal with the network until after it was made, and since his only choices were "you can congratulate Conan and leave in 2009" or "you can complain, but you'll still leave in 2009," Jay graciously chose the former- never imagining that 5 years later the network would be begging Jay to stay.

    I think the most interesting thing to me is that this Harvard grad who wrote for one of the most famous sitcoms in the history of television somehow has never lost his sort of “man of the people” worldview and style. Like I think it was Paul Simon who said the more famous you get, the harder it is to write songs people can relate to, since you’ve become more disconnected from the masses. But somehow, with everything that should distance him from his audience and even his staff, he seems to just…get it, I guess. He’s the one in a million celebrity who really keeps it real and stays true to who they are. And I think that’s really inspiring.

    Not only is Conan a comedy genius on top of his 'book smarts' as a Harvard guy, but he always gave props and respect to the ones that came before him, and speaking highly of David Letterman, and always referring himself to the "student" of the Late Night shows, and that's what I love him the most about. Best Late Night host to learn humility from.
    Not a comparison, but Craig Ferguson was also great, and I also watched Letterman growing up. Gained respect and started watching Kimmel after he defended Conan and ripped Leno, but Conan's improv ability and creating comedy out from awkward situations and his banters with regular people even from his days in Late Night is what separates him from others.

He’s just so goofy and genuine, I love how little it takes for him to make someone laugh. His curiosity and care for the animals was so refreshing when it seemed every other host was scared or unsure about them, Conan would hold it and not freak out when he learns it’s dangerous, always staying relatively calm.
    These clips were so chaotic but just a taste to his masterful comedy, truly a legend and I admire the man a whole lot. Team Coco forever!
