      He actually made a good point.
      The Apollo spaceships were mostly controlled by gravity alone on their way too the Moon and back, as the engine burns that changed their speed and trajectory only lasted a few minutes at the time.

    • @Surmoka
      @Surmoka Před 4 lety

      Yes that was smart reasoning, I'll give him that. But if you have a ship in space, you're not interested in it drifting as gravity wants, you're interested in driving it to where you want to go. So Tyson's argument is still more realistic.

    • @fromnorway643
      @fromnorway643 Před 4 lety +3

      @@Surmoka
      A spaceship can exploit the gravity to take it where it wants to go. Just start the engines at a precisely calculated time, let them burn for a precisely calculated period while pointing in a precisely calculated direction, and the gravity will do the rest.
      When sending space probes to other planets, they can coast unpowered for months or even years after the launch from Earth, only guided by the gravity of the Sun and the planets.

      You don't have to be a great scientist, to be a scientist. Most 'scientists' are just ordinary people, who live our lives in perpetual enjoyment of discovering new things, and trying to figure them out. The scientific method, is what separates us from the suckers who believe in nonsense. Psssst...... wanna buy a bottle of Trump water? How about some Trump steaks? And don't forget to send the billionaire some of your money, because after all, he's a genius with a very good brain, so he knows how to use it better than you do. In fact, give me the money, I'll make sure it gets to him, I promise.

      @a.a9021 Před 3 lety +52

      No, he wasn't right. He was using quite immature reasoning.
      Neil said, "the reason why it's _probably_ not aliens is, its trajectory around the sun was completely determined by gravitational forces." This is a logical statement. He's saying, this object did not behave any differently than any other inanimate object that has entered our solar system, therefore there is no reason to think that it _is_ any different, insofar as being controlled by aliens. If it _had_ behaved differently, then we might hypothesize that some other force was acting on it. So, maybe aliens. But it did not behave differently.
      What Stephen basically said was, "even if there's no evidence that another force was acting on it, doesn't mean that there wasn't any; maybe we just didn't see it." Yes, that is a possibility. And Neil's initial statement did leave room for that possibility. But it's a bit like saying, "hey, even if there's no evidence that 100 tiny fairies are dancing on your forehead, doesn't mean they aren't there; maybe our human eyes just can't sense them." Okay, sure. But it's up to you to provide evidence, not up to Neil to disprove.
      So this argument is not the "slam dunk" that Stephen and the audience seemed to think it was. It was actually quite a juvenile argument to make.
      If that's what Stephen thinks, then why doesn't he apply the same logic to every other mass that enters our solar system? Why are rocks and asteroids just rocks and asteroids, but this thing is a spaceship? The evidence says they behaved no differently. That is what Neil is saying.

    Stephen's argument is a good counterpoint as even we use gravity assists on deep-space missions. I think the thing is that they're arguing 2 different points. Stephen is arguing if it's possible and Neil is arguing that it's an argument from ignorance.
    It's a classic case of neither is wrong.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that at 3:08 when the pen is thrown, it was caught perfectly on camera and Neil's reaction was like a slow mo dodge with an "am not impressed" look on hahaha

    Stevens counter-argument had me rolling. But these two got some really great chemistry
