War needs science, science does not need war.
But science needs the military. Because in the world we are living in this is where a lot of the money comes from. And scientists generally like to eat and sleep under a roof.

Man, how I miss Carl Sagan.
Whenever he speaks about Carl Sagan, it is clear that Neil feels the same. He lights up when he tells the tale about the thrill of meeting him as an adolescent. I think Carl would be very proud if he were alive today.
Neil desperately wants to be the successor to Sagan but he falls well short of that goal.

Carl Sagan was an actual scientist who worked with NASA on the Mariner missions to Venus, the Voyager missions, and conducted research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has authored over 600 scientific papers now published in the library of congress, and a pulitzer prize winning author. He was editor in chief of Icarus, the leading professional journal devoted to planetary research, founded The Planetary Society, and considered one the the greatest orators in science education in mass media as well as being a professor at Cornell University.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is a manager of a planetarium in a museum. He’s far more concerned with pop culture than science, obsessed with his celebrity status and Twitter followers. This is really evident on his celebrity show Startalk when he stammers through interviews constantly interrupting everyone. His speeches and publishings are dumbed down to elementary levels of science to appeal to social media dullards. So no, he does not come close to Sagan’s level.
I love Neil, but I agree with axnyslie that Tyson's fixation on pop culture and celebrity status and less fixation on the actual science puts him below Sagan. I do give Tyson props where it is due however his Cosmos series I think is actually better than Sagan's and I think Tyson is a better communicator than Sagan was, Tyson's fixation on pop culture and social media makes him one of the best scientific communicators there's ever been and that is important.
I don't think Sagan would ever be happy or accepting of the fact military funding is so used for science, it's misplaced values, highlighting that it is so common tho is important he just didn't speak against it much. Neil is no slacker in the science department either, but I feel Sagan has more integrity.

I don't think there was ever an issue about defending yourself against a genuine threat. The issue has always been, how do you decide what is a legitimate threat, and who decides that, and how, and how much transparency should be involved; and how do you insure that this power isn't abused, for example, so that a politician can look tough during an election year. I know Dr. Tyson's just selling a book on a semi-frivolous talk show, and I'm sure the book itself is more nuanced, but still.

Well. I don't feel war is something you should enter into lightly or without serious consideration beforehand. I feel it should be avoided if there is any viable alternative. But sometimes it's just what you have to do.

Yet again the victim countries would need to engage into war to protect themselves from the attacking govs. So really its a cycle. We need to shape ourselves. Stop the greed, and see other people as brothers and family and another individual from thr same species. Even if they differ in thinking and religion and ideologies. I come from a country that was occupied for many years and to this day still trying to occupy. We fought our way to freedom. Without war, we would have been under occupation and to this day, oppressed. So i fully understand the need for war, but wish it wasnt there.

I’ve always admired Neil Degrassi Tyson he is such a good communicator and certainly One happy chappy to have around. Watching his interview with Stephen Colbert you can’t be no none too impressed about the subject matter, so I went immediately to audible and purchased this latest book accessory to war.
God I could listen to him talk for hours and days and would die from dehydration because he is so mesmerizing to listen to

Well, Captain Cook was a scientist but he was also an officer in the Royal Navy, so it was pretty clear what he was up to. He learned cartography as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
I, for one, am glad a scientist mapped Pitcairn Island, because without it the story of the Bounty would only be half as cool.

The book is 408 pages of text, 126 pages of notes on the text, referenced by small superscript numbers in the text. The balance is selected sources and index.
He wrote it with Avis Lang, a research associate at Hayden Planetarium. She has edited previous work by Dr. Tyson.
I've read about 50,pages and it reads well. The first couple of chapters have a lot of historical background. I think I will enjoy this.

"Traditional sciences"? What does he mean by that? Astronomy was part of the quadrivium and also a major field in ancient greece. It doesn't get much more traditional than that.
In fact, IIRC, chemistry - which he does consider traditional - didn't become its own thing for a long time.

Man, I can never get tired hearing Neil DeFresse Tyson.... love this man so much...
Neil has built up a ton of credibility with me over the years for always being intelligent and thoughtful, so I'm willing to engage with his ideas about war. I don't think I agree with them, but because he has a history of saying things that are logical and thoughtful, I will at least entertain him on this. As opposed to, say, almost everyone else who likes to talk politics by yelling their predictable, biased opinions at me.

Theodoяe Kяap Wow, what a simplistic, watered-down view of the Syrian conflict. You make it sound like the US gave weapons directly to ISIS, which is false. We did arm the FSA and opposition forces in Syria, and when they were beaten by ISIL, they took their weapons. But that's a far cry from "let's fund and arm jihadists."
Simplified is the only way the conservitard base can get even the slightest idea of what went on, though. Making it simple, black and white, and easy to pin on an obvious target like a Clinton or Obama is the way to go for them. They had a hand in it so obviously that means they physically went there and handed out weapons to isis. You can't talk about people being just bad, they need to be portrayed as silly comic book villain bad.

I don't see why Neil Tyson's gotta diss "kumbaya" like, okay, sometimes war is necessary. Sometimes a prostate exam is necessary, I'm not going to go around singing its praises. Seems like Neil researched a bunch of scientists participating in wars throughout time and felt left out or something.
Definitely.. it seems like he is priding in his knowledge and excellence. It's a bit scary to hear these types of statements coming from him as he ages & this all may simply be a fight or flight response. Historically it's a trend for great scientists to naturally be confronted when it comes to warfare but I miss the "you are the universe & the universe is inside you" altruistic Neil. If he's going down this road I like to think he is coming from an angle of defense rather than militaristic offense. I always love hearing these two converse though & the amount of time they had together this round was far too brief
I mean Neil's last words were about going to war reactively, however going to war means going on the offensive, there is no such thing as a only defensive war. There will come a time where certain ideologies are worth going to wars for (fascism and communism during ww2) and the enemy will not stay down or take a step back for peace talks, you will not have a choice but to go to war, or submit to their wishes. Although these ideologies may not be relevant to the victims of the war, some would argue it's for the future or for the rest of the world. That is what Neil thinks of going to war, but the reality could be far from it. Almost every war the US is engaged in the past 2 decades were fueled by monetary and resources purposes. Money makes the world function, wars build industries, wars provide a monetary income, wars win you a position of superiority over trade and resources. It's almost impossible to rid the world of war or for the US to wash its hands clean, when the worlds status quo is solely built on US' military superiority.

To rid the world of war is no easy task, it is not something you can uproot with one pull as its effects is spread far and wide. War is a big part of human history and it will continue to be one. The fact that the 'peace' US is building is built upon the threat of their military might and violently removing their enemies is enough proof to that.

It's totally naive to believe that the US would only use its military power legitimately and ethically. Just look at the history and at the current administration. Of course, when there are 'bad agents' operating, you want to defend yourself and kick their ass. But the US is sometimes the 'bad agents' itself. So either is Neil deGrasse Tyson naive, or he is selfish and only cares about his won security, and it doesn't matter what the US does with its military somewhere in the world, as long as the US wins.
I'm not saying that all wars were bad or unnecessary - it was right to fight fascism during ww2, but there are better solutions to secure peace than weapons. The future of mankind can't be built on arms race.
I don't see much loss to get to the moon some years later, but the thousands and thousands of nuclear weapons are keeping hunting us.
Tun Huang you missed the point entirely. War is sometimes the answer. That’s a simple fact of the world. There are times when direct force must be applied for the protection of that which deserves protection. The only naive statement here is your assertion that there is always an answer that doesn’t involve violence. Oftentimes there are peaceful solutions. But oftentimes there are not.
I love Neil. I love his books. His book on Pluto was very funny. Gonna order this one now.
