  • Mickey Mouse Enters Public Domain. What Does this Mean for Disney? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Disney's earliest Mickey Mouse has entered public domain as the American copyright expires. Anyone can use Mickey's first version without permission or cost. Meaning the version launched in the 1928 short film "Steamboat Willie". Over a century, Mickey Mouse has become a beloved pop-culture icon.
It transformed the fortunes of Walt Disney and helped the Disney Company increase its worth to $171 billion. According to reports, the Mickey Mouse character alone brings in about $6 billion each year. So what does copyright removal of Disney's beloved mascot mean for the company? What does it mean for the character? Palki Sharma tells you.

I don't know about Mickey being portrayed as a serial killer, but a corrupt corporate executive, that is more likely.

Just wait till Bugs Bunny becomes Public Domain. Then people will start making crossover movies with Bugs and Mickey.

The copyright was supposed to run out back in the 1990s but the Disney Corporation convinced Congress to extend the copyright another 30 years

1984 but in 1976 the copyright got extended then in 1998 they extended it once more. Allow me to explain. Back then the copyright expired after 28 years. However, you can get an 1 time extension for another 28 years for a total of 56 years. Which was why some Looney Tunes shorts for example went into the public domain 28 years later. Anyway, in 1976, the copyright was extended to 75 years then in 98 they gave it an 20 years extention. Now totaled 95 years.

Mickey Mouse is now a trademark because they put the first video of Mickey Mouse as their trademark. so now no one can use it even if it is in the public domain.
they can have more than one trademark but why?

If Disney were to release something with a dark Mickey tomorrow, many parents and fans would condemn it for that. However, the public domain opens up the possibility to distort the character from its original traits and virtues that everyone loves. It's a change that no one requested. I believe it's crucial to find a balance between creative freedom and preserving the values and integrity of the characters, avoiding interpretations or uses that could distort their original essence.

Almost 100 years of copyright protection for Mickey Mouse and Disney. Is Disney giving up on Mickey Mouse as their flagship character? Change Disney's leadership if they are not doing anything better than Mickey Mouse. Then maybe Disney and Mickey Mouse can enjoy another 100 years of copyright protection.

You think the Internet is the only place you need to understand anything. You are a fool because there is a lot of information that you are not reading or have never heard of before. It shows because people who agree with me know the law.
