Y'all were down in our neck of the woods in Bertie County at the old Thompson's saw mill. I recognized it immediately and showed my wife. She said that engine was running years ago when She was riding the school bus, She's 64 now. That engine is a piece of history in Bertie County, glad you are saving it !
We can hear in your voice how exhausted you were, it is a huge sacrifice of your time and resources. I hope you know we all appreciate you saving this history, there will be schools taking field trips to see what your crew has done, I'm sure. I am amazed how you always find a way to get the job done and make it look easy, great job.
And the museum continues to expand. So great that you care enough to save these ancient relics that built our country. The world is a better place with people like you helping preserve our heritage. Thanks for sharing.
That forklift looked to be a little light on the steering with the flywheel on it. 😉 After working for 35 years at a steel mill working on old electrics very similar to those units makes me want to come down and help you hook it up. I really like these old beasties. Glad to see you saving them. 👍😎
Excellent video Johnathan W :) also Scott :) great team work together for get this Steam Engine and Generator set up also looking forward more videos too soon on put together and update running hopefully! Yes that interesting on pour bearings for sure and so cool see that !
Oh boy! Been looking for an update of all things steam at the homestead! Now there's a sight! That flywheel up on the forklift! You saved another one! I'm taking odds that it'll be up and running, and right soon! Thanks for your channel!
Jonathan, I am going to try my level best to keep this comment short. I was but just thirteen back when I was helping Rocky Wilson and his wife with their pack horses. The Forest Service had paid him to remove a steam engine from its location in the upper cascade mountains. I remember so very little except the name of the mine was the Skagit Queen and it was a Lead and Silver mine. I am commenting on this just because of this flywheel. It had a eight foot flywheel and our ever grateful moment was that it was built in pieces. So even that said, It came apart in six large pieces and was so heavy that we built special packs for the horses to use two horses per parts of this flywheel. Now we only had to go thirteen miles back in that mountain, but Jonathan, it took almost three full long and hard days to do this. I so wish I could go back in time and video this. I ain't never been more serious in my life
Wow that looked like a tough job. I know how you both feel after working so hard, but the reward of success in saving those engines makes it worth it. Great vid thanks.
The thing I like about Jonathan is no matter what happens it's not a problem! He just goes on and fixes things and nothing's a big deal for him! But it might be for the rest of us!!😁
I was watching it bend the fork lift blades that's pretty hard to do unless that was still bolted down to a concrete pad. But 7 tons for the steam engine alone and then the two generators too. You are very passionate about saving every steam engine you can find. Great video
Working without a break sounds like a double lunch on the way home. I shure hope so. Always twice as hard working away from home but you seem to remember everything needed. Glad you took the time to film and share it. Thanks.
Great job. I been missing my steam engines.. nothing stops you boys. I'd be sell power to the power company..you Need a man Manning the fire 24 hrs a day.. good luck. You always make me want to come and help you. Have a good week.. Good luck..Adios.
Long time viewer of yours. Your channel is my favorite on CZcams, 60 years old from Lancaster, Ca., reasonably close to Death Valley. I know I'm going to have a great day when I've seen you post a video. Thanks to your wife, son, Scott and your other friends for helping you create these videos. Peace
Back in my twenties ( 67 now) I used to go in and salvage grain mills and wooden grain elevators with a small crew strictly for the salvage value of it. 70 -80 year old timber from the buildings along with all the corrugated tin on the roofs and sides which looked like new on the down side and it all sold easily. The grain hammer mills were pretty well worn so they went for scrap prices. It was really hard work but fun. We also did barns and corn cribs when people wanted them removed because barn siding and support beams were a huge seller as well.
"I'm not in any rush to do anything with it" Next week it'll be set on a pad, plumbed in and running as you complain about not getting the paint done yet =)
Well done. In 2001 I saved a 12X18 HSG Class F automatic from an east Texas sawmill site. It was in really bad shape. After some thought it was donated to a local county farm museum. HSGs were commonly used in cotton gins in north Texas. Hauling a steam boiler home earlier this year some moron in pickup truck tossed something out at me and I lost a trailer tire. I presume it was some sort of road spike.
After workin your butts off all day, finally hit the road, and then get two flats!! That was the last thing you needed! But good on you for coming prepared !!
Afternoon Jonathan, Meow to NaNa!!!! 2nd.................... It is SOOO Good to see you, Your breathing is not near as labored as it use to be, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Hope the Mrs. is doing well!!! God Bless YOU and your Family Jonathan, Be Well and keep up the GOOD FIGHT!!!!!!!
That was a great save, there, Jonathan. You and Scott make a great team, thanks for the great work and for bringing us along for the ride. One thing that puzzles me ; was that one engine powering two generators, and of different sizes? God Bless and stay safe, Meow to Ninja Catscan.
I know this was a royal pain to remove ,but can you imagine what it was like to unload ,move this into place and get it set up to run back in the day when it was new .
Thanks so much for letting us see that struggle and the kind of equipment you had to do just to make that move work!! What a big big big job you guys had just the two of you. I'm telling you were very very smart to have brought your own forklift and make it all work!! All the best from Surrey BC Canada
👍👌👏 Very well done, guys. But maaan, it could be heard by the tone of your voice that this was a really beasty, exhausting job. Congratulations 🎉 for being able to do all that. Best regards, luck and especially health to both of you.
Nice save! Have you thought about hooking up the steam generator for back up power for your property? If a hurricane devastated the power grid, you’d be set for the long run. Just a thought.

Love those huge old generators, they look like the radial engines on old warbirds!

She’ll be running in month! Go JW!😊
The nice thing about really large steam engines is that you'll never hear anyone complain about cluttering up the house with them:)

The important issue is that you saved them from the scrap yard ! Good job!

Oh Boy that is one heck of a load. Glad to see you guys made it back alright. You were right about carrying both spare tires.
You forgot the air compressor hanger from the rafters. 😆
I'm very glad all of that stuff is getting saved. Be a shame to scrap it all.
Maybe another trip? Lol, may as well get it all, especially if it’s just going for scrap.
Haha. It was on the floor this time. Fell sometime since we were there.
