Simon from the UK here... A towing video AWESOME Johnathon. Learning things with every video. Love these towing videos. 😉 can't wait to see the painted truck.
See you on the next one 😉
The wrecker business must be mighty complicated legally.
I like your wrecker videos as well as all the other ones. I know very little about the wrecker business except as a customer.
I like the rat rod and car videos best (looking forward to the next Triumph drag car one!), but also like your stories, history, "how to's", I like them all.
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing your day with us, man do we have it easy!
Hit the nail on the head with the doctor and weatherman comment! 😂
Years ago I was working maintenance at an aluminum plant. We had French built cranes that serviced the production part of the plant. We were having a lot of problems and the company sent an engineer from France to figure it out. That engineer knew everything, and I mean everything, about the crane. I told him he was the best engineer I had ever met, he told me that after getting his degree the company hired him and he had to work at every phase of building the crane from welding up the frame to putting the lights on the cab before they let him work on the on the start up of the cranes. He said it was about 4 years before he got to do any of what engineers here in the USA do on day one. I believe that is why we have some of the stupid things on everything we have.
THAT'S the way it should be. We have a couple of enginerds at my work and I don't know if either one of them could find their butts with both hands.
Russ Davis True story. I used to work maintenance in a die casting factory and they hired a plant engineer who was one of those book smart college graduates. He was a real dick so we decided to screw with him. We asked him, if you fill a bathtub with dry ice and let it melt, and then get into it would you get wet? He actually said yes............. so much for a college education!
Brilliant!!!!
Jonathan I always learn from your videos, thanks you
Thanks for the ride along 👍
Enjoy the videos pretty much regardless of what they are ya post. Thanks for taking the time to post
I enjoyed this video. Great entertainment for a boring Friday night.
It's a rare thing for you to do a ride along so thank you very much. I'm looking forward to seeing the crew cab all finished. It should look great. Say hello to you and yours Jonathan and Happy Easter if I don't talk to you before that.
I love these videos! Keep up the good work sir!
Thanks Johnathon, Enjoyed the video and the stories. Take care.👍
Hey Jonathan, Thanks for the ride along and conversation!
Whenever I see guys with those little Porsches I always say "nice Karrman Ghia"...they just love that.
The KG's are worth a lot now... and the engines are repairable and with a huge aftermarket.
CerebusTV , it's a kit car.
Is that like the MR2 Ferrari owners lol. 😁
I was talking about the VW based KG... and the aircooled VW and clones engines they use.
thanks for taking us along. That was interesting.
I'm an engineer for a manufacturing plant in Kansas. When I interviewed the bosses appreciated that I had a background in welding and fabricating. One of the most important things to them was the ability to communicate with the operators and maintenance men and get to the real root of the problem. If I build a relationship with the person that deals with the problem every day he can help guide me to a better solution and I can use my skills to create a solution that he may not have thought of.
The discussion re: engineers hits home! My Dad was an engineer and made sure I took shop classes because he was sick and tired of hiring engineers who didn't know what a Phillips screwdriver was! Now...30 years later...now I'm an engineer doing hiring and I look for engineers who fix / modify their own cars, play with electronics, etc... - anything "hands on" where something gets built! Guys who can build stuff make the best engineers. One of the best engineers I've ever known...my maternal grandpa...barely made it through high-school but could out-engineer 95% of the engineers coming out of school today because he could and did make stuff. (like a purely mechanical machine that would count fifty pennies and roll them...out of scrap garbage!)
One of the reasons I love the budget drag car series is because you're one heck of a good engineer. Takes engineering smarts to do that sort of thing, ESPECIALLY on a budget! :)
FWIW, my Tundra has one of those "non-serviceable" transmissions without a dipstick. Turns out you can service it - it has a drain plug, a fill plug, and a "level check" plug. Checking the level is an affair. I'd like to smack the engineer that did that - made something simple into a total pain in the rear!
Jonathan, I've improvise center caps like that in the past. Whatever you go with, try using overlapping beads of high temperature silicon on the back side and let it cure completely.
Mine would never fall off and is removable (only takes a razor blade)
Good stuff as always. Take care!!! All the best from Arizona!!!
Jonathan, I’m a Audi VW and Porsche collision tech. What you were saying about the engineers is right....I call cars today, “reverse engineered”...they don’t think about the cars ever needing repair!
"Two thumbed engineers?" They never seem to talk to the body guys, I guess its all about style and sales and money.
While you don't want to tear up any car you tow, I imagine a lowered car is more difficult no matter what the value.
Im looking forward to the video of the four door hauler completed, even if its a quick walk around.
I like my old cars and trucks that has a dipstick on them
i keep saying this but he is one good man
There is a 6" mirror you can use for the center cap. You might want to make a thin backing plate to place on the back side of the simulator to hold the mirror in place so it has a bigger area for the sticky tape to grab a hold of.
That appears to be a 1957 Porsche 356 Wide Body Speedster, worth about $100,000.00 But, it could be a reproduction Porsche 356 Wide Body, on a Volkswagon (Karmann Ghia) chassis.
I thought an engineer was a train driver.
Have fun!!
I'm an Engineer and yes, I do drive the locomotives!
What a great idea , a mirror !!
Jonathan, GPS has sent me down many of those questionable roads, especially near Ft. Bragg. I went down one and got stopped by the MPs, apparently it was near the artillery range. This was around 2005, they had a lot of questions for me.
Happened to me in Germany too... I was near Baumholder (Army training base) and ended up on what appeared to be tank trails... no MPs, but I was wondering why they were on the GPS as valid roads 🤷♀️
Mirror center is great. Align, tape outside to hold. From the inside- lay a bead of 3M Weatherstrip adhesive, or similar, just roughen up all mating surfaces, and wipe with acetone first. You could also turn out the holes to fit the other caps. 4" tough here--> www.amazon.com/Source-Shatter-Centerpiece-Acrylic-Mirrors/dp/B01JBBXJ8I/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1522530018&sr=8-18&keywords=4+inch+round+mirror
Yeah when I towed I hated to do repo's. Cars that are low to the ground were tough like corvettes. I carried 2x6 boards and extra wood for purpose.
No dipsticks in the auto trans is a bad idea but they have been doing that for quite some time now. I'd go to a junkyard and get one or buy an oil dipstick and mark it myself.
You can shave, comb your hair, and ya gotta hubcap too. Good video.
Hi Jonathan. That Dodge van has a short dipstick tube on the front transmission cover. It has a plastic cap on the tube you need to remove and you check the fluid with a dipstick tool while looking at the transmission temperature on your scan tool and setting the level based on a chart you get with the tool. You might be in a jam and need to add fluid to one of these one of these days.
Nice!
BTW, that a neat idea for the center caps. Even if they do break, it won't take much to fix them.
356 bathtub Porsche. Doesn't look like a kit car to me.
Hi Jonathan. % of rain chance doesn't mean %70 chance that it will rain it means %70 percent of a given area will get rain.
Holy shnikie its a 356! Man if thats not a kit car... bank!
that Porsche is worth a bunch.
wow! your busier than a hen yarding logs!!!! the mirror centers...great idea!! dont get shinnier than that!!!!!!
A mirror what a great idea. Maybe they have one at a truck stop or on ebay.
Wrote service in a Ford dealership for 21 years, never would sell a trans job (or any job) without a PROPER diagnosis , and that might be filling a trans if it was low on fluid to diagnose it correctly. Our techs were long time employees, some of them 30'or more years experience. Dealers get a bad rap a lot of the time. There's good and bad across the board, dealer or independent.
I did pull out, it went against the speeder. My '74 Econoline 200's front bumper opened up the side of her new Nissan '84-'85? like a tin can of sardines. No one physically hurt. I was backed in diagonal to the curb, she approached from the left of me, she had just pulled onto the small street, and must've gunned it, I check, re-check always, she was flying, cop thought so too.
Hey Jonathan, great video as always. Could you not turn the centre hole bigger to fit those caps you have or is there not enough meat? Have a good weekend
I did pull out ,no kids yet 😎
In the UK the repo guys run a fine line between legal and illegal using dodgy court orders. I learned 40 years ago to never pick up a job without proper "signed,Sealed, delivered' paperwork and no digital ipad things or photocopies that aren't certified as being legal copies. because if you damage the car life becomes very difficult .
I guess i owe you an oppalagee. I have been calling you an engineer thinking I was paying you a compliment. i'm an architectural draftsman who swings a hammer on the side people think that's a good thing. I guess it's different for engineers.
I hear what your saying about the none serviceable transmission. But they are still serviceable just not like they used to be. The main reason they did this was because people would put the wrong fluid in it and ruin the transmission.
just to fellow up on those plugs Lowe`s item #139389- model#881265 and that`s for a 3.6in. chrome hole plug they have 3.5 , 3.8, 3.4
Lol about the weatherman comment... it’s the only job in the military where I can be wrong 100% of the time and still get a good rating 👍
People will be asking you how you got such a mirror finish on your center caps. Lol
my kinda place,
Looks like a VW to me lol
the front simulators have 10 lugs and the rears are 8. Dont look like a matched set.
But both sets are stainless!!
think i would ask a lawyer about your legal standing in those cases just so you know
you'd be shocked at how much those "bath tub" Porsches sell for
why not cut the center of the simuler to accept the cover you got ? that would be my solution
what was the name of the VW shop ?
My big automotive engineer pet peeve is mixing metric with standard. I had a truck where the alternator was held with 9/16, 14mm, 10mm, and 5/8. Four 9/16 would have been plenty. Automotive engineers should work in the repair shops and wrench on the stuff they design.
Sounds like a mid '80's GM.
Ah th "metric battle...again". In the USA, we go by the Society of Automotive Engineers standards...in Europe, DIN (Germany) won out over Whitworth (thank you Jesus).. then along came the JIC (Japanese Industrial Councile?)..who don't use either standard as to thread pitch, threads per inch or nut/bolt sizes! Yes there is a Santa Clause...Just don't try to put a Honda bolt into a VW!
Whats the brown spot on the lens?
burn spot from welder
They want engineers to make vehicles that are throwaways, not ones that can be repaired, from which the company gets no money.
Heard that Mercedes is going to take the dipstick off motor. So you won’t be able to check engine oil.
I saw one of the S class the other day. No dipstick, the trouble center in the dash monitors the oil level. Creepy.
BMW already has taken the lipsticks out.
No NASCAR button?
28 views and only 6 voted thumbs up ~ 25%. Many times < 10% vote. Why is that?
I watch on my TV and it’s not simple to thumbs up videos; with that said, I make the effort to thumbs up his videos because I like his honest “little guy” content that probably gets buried beneath a-holes producing stupid and hateful content...
Hey Johnthan have you ever tow a car or truck by mistake? I am Not picking on you, just wondering just like the lady with the blue car and there is a neighborhood of blue cars. Just wondering . Sorry for the dumb question.
No, but I have unloaded at the wrong shop before! Gary's Transmission and Gary's service center are two different places 1/4 mile apart
Local gravel pit here had a nice new D9 cat go missing on the weekend. A lot of theft around here lately but after being reported it was discovered it was a mistake on a transport company. Got across two provinces before that mix up got solved.
Dont park the truck in dry grass with those mirrors
Lol, that isn't a Porsche, good video though. 😊
Hopefully, President Trump gets the Supreme court straightened out. The ruling by the court that check points don't violate unreasonable search and seizure is absurd. 10 States disagree with this ruling and have determined otherwise.
they make something called chrome hole plug you can get them at, Lowe`s or home depot in the pluming dept. or google 31/2in. chrome hole plug Lowe`s has them for $1.04 each check it out
Porsche is 356 model not a kit car
Nope, i have worked on a lot 356's as restos and that is just VW kit car .no speedster ever came with flared guards and if it were a real one the flares would have been removed years ago. The VW beetle headlights are another clue.
Thats a speedster if its original it's worth $100,000
Clifford Carlisle, it is far from a speedster.
