My Boston started having seizures at 4 years. She also had a slight defect in a vertebrae in her lower spine. At age 13 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor which affected her ability to walk. Through it all though she was a wonderful, happy dog that we loved very much. I would not hesitate to get another even with the issues.
@ASCALON We got a new BT who is now 3 months old. She is spoiled and fills our life with joy
How was brain tumour diagnosed?
My Boston had a hair loss problem and got his blood tested after he gained weight even when on a diet for months. Randy had hypothyroid and in a year or two he has regained his hair with permanent medication. He doesn’t have deafness at all and one minor scratch on his one eye that was cured by drops. He is losing his vision but most dogs do but he is healthy and beautiful. I love him so much.
I think bostons are one of the healthiest breeds out there. My vet says he rarely sees bostons come in with problems
Yeah I would agree when it comes to my Bella. Other than her allergies to grain that has been it.
Don't kid yourself. While any dog can get sick or inherit certain deseases and illnesses, Boston terriers are far from one of the more healthy breeds. I am glad that your vet don't see a lot of issues with boston terriers, that does not mean that they are a healthy breed.
I have had three an they are very prone to brain tumours.
I was surprised at the age THING..i heard there were 7 years FOR each year.?? I was and still cannot believe my Cali was so healthy, then 9 years or about she got Heart Disease, did well LASIX, for awhile, was a BLESSING , miss her...Best Fury Friend ever.
@@michellewirch4960what was your dog's diet like friend?
Thanks a lot I get my Boston July 23 I’m definitely about to ask these questions
Great!
I am getting my first Boston on the 22nd!!
My Boston had to have TPLO surgery for both her hind legs. Was not cheap. And was not expected. My husband grew up with Bostons and our first dog was a Boston. Never had any issues besides the typical breathing ones.
Sister-in-law has a Boston. He goes on hikes/walks with her everywhere. She was trying to get him trained on how to handle being around outdoor animals. And that’s how she learned that he was blind in one eye.
I have 4 Bossies. We battle allergies with my 9year old male. Short of that they are very healthy. Super smart and lovable. The anxiety disorder is also something I deal with.
What do you do for allergies
Thank-you for your dedication and great information about Boston Terriers. I have never owned one yet but after looking into several breeds felt a Boston was perfect. After watching a CZcams video titled 5 dog breeds to avoid by some vet I got concerned when the Boston was one of them, due mainly to the breathing issues caused by their facial structure. I live in Las Vegas also which gets very hot in the summer. I located a breeder which lives in similar climate and discussed these issues with him. He said his Bostons have a longer nose than many of the ones he's seen and has had no issues with his adults. Just wanted to get your opinion on this or any of the other Boston owner's reading this. Tad
Our family is planning to get a boston in the near future. I had a boston mix over 10 years ago that i loved so much, but she had really bad seizures. We ended up having to put her to sleep because of severe brain damage from a really bad siezure episode. Everything about the breed is a perfect fit for us but im so scared of health issues.
My boston is allergic to grass!
Did grass cause a rash on the belly, paws, legs & face?
Hey Donnie love your videos. Thanks for taking the time to do them. You often ask if there is a video we'd like to see. I have a suggestion. I here that Boston Terriers are goofballs (in a good way). That they are crazy entertaining and funny. I don't know if you have any video on Bella being goofy but maybe you can talk about some of the things that they are known to do. I am picking up my first Boston puppy next Saturday and I am really hoping my puppy ends up being happy go lucky and makes me laugh regularly.
That’s a great idea Frank! I’ve been contemplating creating a video of Boston Terriers doing funny things. Basically ask people to send in their funny Boston videos. It may be a while before I do something like this but it is a great idea. Did you get your Boston yet?
@@BostonTerrierSociety Donnie, thanks for asking. We pick up our first Boston tomorrow. He will be 8 weeks old, he is a red, and we have named him Bogey as a result of my 4 sons love for golf. And it took me a bit to convince my wife to sign off on adding a dog to our family. So our inside joke related to Bogey is that I "got ONE OVER on mom." :-)
Yeah I say that the knees are a little bit of an issue because when our boston goes outside in the grass, and she comes back in, she holds one of her feet off of the ground and hops on 3 feet for a little while and then finally she can put it back down
I want a Boston baby! Need to wait til I have more time to make sure she or he can exercise lots
Just got our Boston her name is Tulie . Thank you for your advice and videos .
You are so welcome! How exciting!
I had lost my Bella Rose back on Jan. 9th while at the vets for checkup. she suddenly had severe seizure, afterwards the vets said we must let her go due to all the pain and suffering she was in, my Bella was barely 4 years old, I miss her so very much, but now wonder did I do the right thing? the reason she was at the vets in 1st plce her eye seem to be getting cloudy.
A friend's female BT has a rash on its face, paws, legs and belly. The vet had no clue. Any suggestion what it might be that's causing this?
Boston terrier rescue
My 11 year old Boston just died from throat cancer. She had a mass in her airway. She had seizures and her airway was so swollen . her lungs were filling up with fluid. We had to put her to sleep because she was suffering. My baby is at the bridge now happy and healthy.
Awww shame. Rip little one. Mine also showing signs of mass around neck area but they seem very happy and active so maybe nothing to worry about 🤔
My Boston got stones in his bladder. He had to have surgery to get them removed. The type of stones he had weren’t dissolvable with medicine. So stressful. The only reason I noticed was because he was barely peeing like his flow was weak. Got xrays done and stones traveled down to his pee canal(?). They had to flush the stones back into his bladder so his flow could be normal. I had to pray they didn’t come back down his canal (dr. Said it was possible) till I can get a surgery date and get my money together.
That’s the only issue he’s had. He’s on a different diet so he does not develop stones again. It’s still possible the vet said. I pray it doesn’t.
Oh my goodness that sounds terrible. Hopefully your boston is doing ok now?
Boston Terrier Society it was but he’s doing a lot better now🙏🏼. Thank you for asking!
My Boston Gage gets these little bumps above his eyes, idk what at they are and how to get rid of them?
My boston puppy now 9 months has had three boots of eye ulcers. We believe it was caused by rough play with other dogs and eye got scratched, and playing in the dirt and sand and getting particles in his eyes. Anyone else have this happen? Bought some doggles but will he leave them on? Thanks.
I've got a boston mix. Don't know what the sire breed was as the pregnant mother just showed up in my barn one day. But it seems like everytime i take the puppy i kept to the vet, they discovered another fancy condition or disease. And seems like every time we went we saw another young vet. Just out of school perhaps or maybe the office couldn't keep a good one around??? Don't know but i got tired paying for all the testing costs and meds - couldn't get out of the office for less than $300 every time!!! Anyway now my 10 year old "pup" is being treated for hypothyroidism and liver condition/disease. They want to do a complete, expensive blood test every month and every month the numbers change!! I know i need to be more consistent in giving the meds daily but because she has to take the daily 1X dose liver med on an empty stomach, i can't get up early enough to then avoid giving her the last 2X daily 12 hours apart, thyroid med before 1AM before i can go to bed!! Can't find a vet that's good and not excessively expensive!!! As an example, the previous vet charged about $65 for 30 days of the liver "supplement" that i can only get from the vet!!! Next vet charges $94 for the same exact medicine. Don't know why the price went up almost 50% from one office to another. I think the local vets have an veterinarian association that sets prices!! Is that even legal?? I guess I really need to find a vet to treat my boston mix that is good, thorough, but not expensive!!! Guess I've got two questions. #1 - how do you find a good vet and find out what they charge?? #2 - how frequently do bostons suffer from hypothyroidism AND liver disease???
Your pet insurance link is no longer valid. Please update.
What if they are from a Boston Terrier rescue?
My puppy has red eyes and eye water has discoloration under the eye. Is that normal?
I love this dog breed ... my baby is 7 months he is a boy he super playful but he is allergic to the grass he love to roll him self in the grass and run but when he comes in the house his allergies start too show up I've took him to get checked and yes grass causes him allergies only sad thing anyone here that owns a boston that has the same problem?
I live in NorthEastern part North Carolina due you no any breeders that breeds Boston Terriersin my area or any breeders that breeds near my state. Or a way I can find breeders preferably near were I live in Northern Carolina. Thank you
Check out this video I put together it will help point you in the right direction czcams.com/video/hWw_XgRuMW4/video.html
Can you help me please?! My Boston Terrier cAnt chew. She acts like her jaw hurts really bad. She won't let you touch her under or on the side of her mouth. What could be causing this?
Sorry to hear that. I would contact your vet to see what they recommend
Our little darling developed cherry-eye which was surgically corrected.
Sorry to hear that. At what age did that happen?
@@BostonTerrierSociety At about 6 months. The surgery went very well; we had her spayed at the same time.
Wow that seems early for eye problems. I’m glad everything went well.
I have a 5 month old Boston Terrier French bulldog mix that developed Cherry eye on right eye that has gone back to normal 4 different times. I'm going to wait and have the surgery when he is 6 1/2 months along with neuter. Has anyone ever had no success with the eye surgery? I heard the cherry eye can come back.
Bracycephalic breed
My Boston has Addison's Disease unfortunately but with a monthly shot she's basically completely healthy
😊
Is there anything I need to know before traveling across the country?
Ask your Vet 👍👍
Jannie brings up a good point. For general travel I would look into getting a travel crate as well as travel seat belts. When we would take Bella on trips we put her in a cloth crate.
We have a seat carrier that can be strapped in. Are dog won’t see the vet till after the trip.
I would make sure shots, including rabies, are up to date. Also bordatella for kennel cough.
Why does my dog Boston itch so much. Also can I give him fish oil for his sin
My boston 2 months old and he got problem breathing how i can help hin more or what u thing the cause is plz help
I would suggest you call the vet and get him in ASAP! I hope he's ok!
@@BostonTerrierSociety ok thank u

It come down to don’t get any dog from a backyard Breeder
I have a deposit put down on a new Boston. It is around 5 weeks old and got a text today saying she was sick and being treated for aspiration pneumonia with breathing treatments and antibiotics. I don’t know what to do. I want her to be clear if it when I get her but you never can tell if there will be ongoing issues such as cleft palate or something else causing it . She supposed to have eaten a little hard food of her mother’s.
Yeah that would be concerning. I'm not sure what I would do in that situation. You could call the vet you intend to use once you have a dog and maybe they can give you an opinion on long term health issues because of this. Because I'm just not sure.
Get a different Boston Terrier. Health issues in pets adds up quickly!
The last thing you want to do is pay a bunch of money for a new dog that will cost you a lot in vet bills.
@@michaelh5055 thank you for your response. The puppy did not survive. My deposit is being returned.
@@BostonTerrierSociety thank you

Hi I am getting a Boston terrier puppy soon and super exited...I have heard a lot about their eye health issues and I just want to know how to clean their eyes regularly so they do not get problems ?
I'm not sure if you mean cleansing the eye. But to help with stuff like tear stains taking a warm washcloth and wiping around the eye helps.
how do you spot allergies? are there some tests that could be done?
The main allergy sign is itching/ excessive scratching, rash, & hair loss in extreme cases. Also if it’s something ingested they may also throw up & have stomach troubles. Alerrgy tests are tty expensive especially when you don’t have a clue what to check for. Both of mine have been allergic to Grass, one was allergic to beef & other foods & the other is allergic to Pennicillan. I love Boston’s & I already told my husband I wasn’t doing without one in our home after our sweet Baby we have now passes. We have other Dogs but I just need my sweet little Boston, maybe a rescue or adoption of one that’s older. I dread the day I lose my sweet Baby Girl. 😢💙
@@dianeoliver9041 thank you so much for your answer! I am so sorry for your loss. How did you find out your dog was allergic to penicillin?
@@SimiiiIsabella She had surgery for Cherry Eye & following the surgery the Vet gave her a Penicillin shot to prevent infection & a few minutes later Macy had swelled up ( her face mostly) & the Vet had to give her a big dose of Benadryl to bring down swelling & counteract the allergic reaction. She told me to never give her Pennicillin. Since then I have found that he can’t take Cephlaflexin ( spelling not right) either, it makes her throw up which is also a sign of an allergy to something if they throw up every time they ingest it. A good Vet is essential, one that loves your dogs & loves on them & one that is younger that knows the latest techniques & procedures. Talk to your Vet about anything you have questions about, they should be glad to talk to you & answer questions if not you need a different Vet. Boston’s are great & generally healthy energetic little dogs that love to play, love to cuddle & are loyal to their owners. In my opinion they are Perfect!!
@@dianeoliver9041 i really appreciate you for answering back. I will try to find a good vet, but as it will be my first puppy, it might be a little difficult. I will get my puppy in 2 months.
Ive read about their health problems and im concerned about them...as internet says they are prone to a lot of things. But i will not focus on that! Ill focus on my puppy to be healthy and loved. ❤️
I just hope he wont be allergic to me hahaha
How do you manage a grass allergy?@@dianeoliver9041
Anybody experiencing cushings disease with their Boston ?
Why do I love flat faces so much😊 I kind of feel guilty....🤭
Having a young Boston I really wasn’t sure how the warmer weeks/months would effect him. I can tell this dog constantly wants to be out with his family, with no real sensor to the heat. Well, we learned the hard way. He certainly had heat exhaustion. Sunken face, wouldn’t eat/drink, very lethargic. Keeping him in the ac and feeding him ice chips helped. Took him about 2 days to feel better. Now he’s energetic, overbearing, and eating/drinking and going the bathroom. Boston owners please don’t make my mistake, be the parent and monitor his outdoor time.
Steve thanks for the advice
Another way to remedy over heating is to let room temperature water run over their body . ( garden hose or shower) i learned this after finding my boston unable to stand or walk due to over heating.
My Boston had cataracts In Canada it cost me 5000 dollars for one eye
😦
Thank goodness, my Boston Terrier has been breed out for cataracts. I know that this is a very big problem. I hope that all is going well.
You can see the gray hair in her face and she is going to get lot more
I know. It goes so fast
