  • Are you wondering why your Boston Terrier is shaking?
In this video, I talk with Dr. Addie Reinhard about the causes of shaking in Boston Terriers. This same shaking can be found in other dog breeds as well. If you have a Boston Terrier that is shaking and you’re unsure why this veterinarian health video is for you.
It can be worrisome to notice your Boston Terrier suddenly starts to shake. Especially if it is something you have never seen before, shaking or trembling can be a startling symptom.
There are many possible causes of shaking in your Boston. It is important to determine if the shaking is normal behavior or abnormal behavior, so you know when to contact a veterinarian.

Trufa shakes when she wants to play. I call it her vibration mode 😂
She has her toy in her mouth and looks at me non-stop till she gets what she wants (basically me throwing the ball).

My 6 yr old male Boston will usually shake when he knows he's headed to the Dog Park! So that would be considered a very ANXIOUS behaviour because he gets to "harass" the BIG DOGS on the other side of the fence 😄. A "big thank you" for this informative video!! I will be saving this video to my library.

I think you misunderstood. Bugsy is A-okay!... He gets anxious because he "loves" to harass his "big dog buddies". He loves to bark and literally run up and down the fence line, making the bigger dogs run with him. Bugsy is like a 5 yr old child... just anxiously waiting to enjoy Disney World! Just thought I'd clarify Bugsy' behavior. 😊 Thank you for being concerned about him.

Okay, I've looked around your videos for this problem but didn't find anything.
Lately my 7 year old Boston has been having restless nights with a lot of hyperventilating. I keep our room cool so it's not because it's hot. She is absolutely fine during the day, no hyperventilating and had no probs at night before until now.
I just don't know what to do for her. She loves ASMR, especially the scratching ones, so that helps put her to sleep sometimes, but then she's up again an hour or two later, hyperventilating and walking around the house, doing only God knows what. Then she'll finally settle down and sleep in her bed the rest of the night.
    It's weird.

Me and my girlfriend just adopted a bt. I absolutely love this little dude. He’s attached to my girlfriend. But when I come home and my girlfriend is not home he runs from me. He runs up to the one bedroom and lays down and when I come up to pet him he shakes. Like he’s scared. But when it’s time for me to take him out for a walk and a ride he’s fine. I just don’t understand. I love this little dude to.

With my Boston, shaking is very predictable. If she is scared from thunder or fireworks, she will hide in a safe space and shake. The other time is if she is very excited, as in "oh boy, I'm getting a tasty piece of steak". For the scared shake, if I hold her tight, it soothes her and she stops, for the happy shakes, I dont worry because the look on her face and how attentive she is tells me she is happy and just very excited. Both shakes are accompanied with totally different attitudes.

Mine shakes/shivers whenever something’s “wrong”. Right now my son is sick with the flu and frequently vomiting so he’s shivering about that. He also sticks really close and makes sure he has one paw on me. He does it whenever there’s tension of any kind in the house, really. I guess this would be anxiety? Poor little dude. I try to comfort him but I think he’s so sensitive to “vibes” that he really can’t relax until everything returns to normal. Come to think of it, I’m a lot like that too lol. Don’t really feel okay/relaxed unless everyone around me feels okay/relaxed…including my dogs.

Thank you! Very helpful video. My 2 yr old Boston had a seizure several months ago. I had never experienced anything like it before and it was so frightening. Noticed that she was quivering weirdly all over and she didn’t seem to see or hear me. As the quivering stopped and she tried to sit up she had that head bobbing the vet mentioned. We rushed her to the emergency vet and they ran tests and settled on epilepsy. Fortunately she hasn’t had another. She also shakes (thought from excitement) when we go out to play ball and sometimes when I put her in the car I thought maybe that excites her as well but now I’m wondering if it’s connected to the seizures and will video that and have a discussion with her vet

The first Australian thunder and lightning storm my girl went through, she locked up and wouldn't stop trembling or move for hours czcams.com/video/DHDuUgtj9Z4/video.html A tip I picked up on CZcams was don't comfort your dog when it's scared as it reinforces that it should be scared. Just carry on as normal and the dog will see you're not scared and get over it. Rip didn't get over it the first time, but she's had a few storms since then and while she don't like them, she don't lock up and tremble no more. She just sulks it out - and I think that's mainly because she can't go outside.

@@BostonTerrierSociety You know I'm not so sure. As I said in my post - a tip I picked up from a trainer on CZcams was not to comfort your dog when it's scared as it reinforces that it should be scared, especially if you're cooing and cuddling it, it'll think your scared too. He said you should just carry on with normal activities as if nothing's happening so it sees you're not scared and takes it's cue off you. BUT.... I stress I'm not a dog trainer or expert, I'm just parroting someone who claims they are. AND important to remember, the best advice I ever got from a dog "expert" is if you put three dog experts in a room, two will think one is an idiot and they'll all have a different opinion on which one is the idiot. So always get a second, third, fourth, fifth opinion. But I will say Rip handles storms better each one that hits - and I've been ignoring her completely when they do.

    • @BostonTerrierSociety
      @BostonTerrierSociety  Před 4 lety +1

Great tip thanks. Hey ncould see how that reinforces the scared behavior. But I could also see how it could potentially calm a very nervous dog...it might be good for me to bring on a professional dog trainer and see what they say. And you are 100% right you can ask three different trainers and get theee different answers.

@@BostonTerrierSociety I do think dogs take their cue off us. I had to have a major operation recently and pre-op while waiting for test results etc I was worried and down about the possibility of bad news. And I could see my worry and melancholy worried Rip too, she was down and moping around and spent most of her time staring at me. After the test results were good and the op fixed me up my mood went through the roof, never been fitter or happier - and I noticed the immediate lift in Rip's mood too. She bounced around reflecting my new lease on life. Dog's are a mirror of ourselves, I'm convinced of that.

Hi there! Could be small nostrils. Here's some info
Stenotic nares is part of the brachycephalic syndrome of short-nosed dogs. Breeds such as Boxers, Bulldogs, King Charles Spaniels, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, etc. are all considered brachycephalic breeds. Stenotic nares means the nostrils are pinched or narrow
