Königsberg (literally King's Mountain) is the name for the historic Prussian city that is now Kaliningrad, Russia. Originally a Sambian or Old Prussian settlement, it then belonged to the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia, the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and Nazi Germany. After being largely destroyed in World War II by Allied bombing and the Red Army, it was annexed by the Soviet Union and its surviving inhabitants forcibly expelled. Thereafter, the city was renamed Kaliningrad. Few traces of the former Königsberg remain today.

Regionalbewusstsein.

The taking of Ostpreußen was the worst of all. While Poland at least had a big ethnic Polish population and historic connection to the Ostgebiete, Russia / the Soviet Union had no claim on Königsberg whatsoever, and only occupied it because of the thirst for power of the murderer Stalin. Today, Königsberg exists as Kaliningrad, a shadow of its former self, its beauty shattered by soviet architecture without a soul, its history ignored, as an oblast of Russia without any connection to the rest of the country, and without a shared history. It is saddening, really. The people speak Russian today, but the winds whisper in German.
Lets be honest though, Germany would have done same to hundreds of Russian cities and towns if they won the War, cultural changing, so its not surprising USSR did same. Is just victors of war get spoils. Still sad either way.

@@ingmarfriedheimer4549 It really is not a bold claim, they planned to "Germanify" many cities and areas in the East, its well documented as apart of there conquest East. Its just how war works

Konigsberg and East Prussia became the territory of Russia for the first time after the battles of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), only the unexpected death of the Empress of all the Russias Elizabeth I Petrovna deprived the Russian Empire of the fruits of victory in that war! In 1945 , Koenigsberg and 1/3 of East Prussia became the territory of the USSR as a result of World War II and were recognized by the WHOLE world ! It is senseless and even criminal to engage in revanchism now ! The lion's share of the destruction of the city of Konigsberg was inflicted by Royal Air Force bombers, and the destruction from the assault was minimal, the 3rd Belorussian Front of the Red Army of the USSR under the command of Marshal of the Soviet Union Alexander Vasilevsky captured the city in FOUR days, carrying out an assault from 6 to 9 April 1945!
Yes, modern Russian Kaliningrad has Soviet/Russian architecture! Any normal adequate person should understand that restoring the architectural forms of the Prussian kings means trying to cultivate the Prussian spirit and militarism in Russia! This was unacceptable not in 1945, not now!
Yes, and my native Stalingrad (Volgograd), which was 98% destroyed, including by "boys in Stahlhelme M35" from the Pregel River (the river in Kaliningrad / Konigsberg), and who destroyed more than 40,000 civilians (including my relatives) in just one barbaric bombing of Stalingrad on August 23, 1942... Many of Stalin's decisions were inhumane. E.g., not only Germans got departed from Silesia, Pomerania and Prussia, but also Poles from Galicia and Belarus. And also Crimean Tatars, Chechens, Kalmyks... The list goes on.

Königsberg.. Heimatstadt meines Urgroßvaters.......
Thank you for this video, my Oma was from Konigsberg.
I know this is a somewhat old and sad video, but I will share a little trivia here, that will maybe lift some spirit. I recently listend to QnA type podcats starring a well know university Professor and security policy expert, called György Nógrádi. (The guy also has a small following in germany as well and he regularly holds seminars at the summer programes of the SPD and the Bundeswher.) At some point in the podcast ,a viewer asked something about the Kaliningrad region, relating the russo-ukranian war. In response he gave a brief overview of the regions history, and at the very end, he mentioned something interesting. On the december of 1991 Just days before the collapse of the USSR, a delegation of soviet officials travelled to eastern block countries to offer territories that said country might desire in exchange for money. Some of these offerings allegedly included: Kárpátalja for Hungary, parts of Kariala for Finnland, and the Kaliningrad region for Germany. However, the german foreign minister at the time (maybe Klaus Kinkel, im not sure) wasnt even willing to recive the delegation and listen to their offer. A few days later the ussr collapsed. So all in all, at some point, a crumbling and desperate Soviet Union have actually tried to return Königsberg to Germany for a price it probalbly could have afforded. Im not entirely sure how much of this is true, but it did make me feel a bit better!
Yes they really offered it, but Germany didn't feel patriotic or demanding anymore, it accepted the total defeat and the new borders forced upon them. Wasn't it Genschers fault?
@@dr.ludwig Oh yes, It was Hans Genscher! Thanks Herr Ludwig! I could not remember. Yes, we can say it was his fault. He was not interested in hearing their offer. But it could be that just a year after the German reunion, he just didnt want to deal with administrative matters of another possible exclave province. He could have been just, lazy or exhausted.
@@derraider3573 It's important to note that Russia wasn't doing it to be nice, they were doing it to get money and nothing more.
@@Trewazo Of course. I didnt say they made the offer out of kindness. They made it because their incompetence and hubris finally caught up to them, and their "empire" was falling apart. In contrast to the german state.
Since 1945 no one in charge in germany has acted in favour of the Germans. We are occupied and decisions like those are not made in German favour or with German interests in mind.@@derraider3573
I will never forgive what the USSR did to Konigsberg...
and forgive the British bombing?
and what Germany did to the USSR
Well, Germany did the same to Poland
i had ancestors that live here and in gumbinnen. it was nice while it lasted
I remember that in the former version of this video there was another performance of the Ostpreussisches Reiterlied. I really like that version and I would like to find out, is there that version on CZcams or Spotify yet?
Yes it's on the channel of "Bern Stein", he ordered to give me a strike and I can't support this man anymore.
@@dr.ludwig, thank you!
Prussia will always be remembered.
I live here. Never accepted the name Kaliningrad. I call it the perl of the Baltic that never happend. It would be the main city in the region if not for the soviet management.
Besonders in Dorfen.
After all, it is the main city in the region. The region is called Kaliningrad Oblast.😂
@@nessundorma11111 i meant the Baltic sea region.
@@marksittner602 It was just a major city in a secondary region. It never had the potential for anything more.
Ich finde das Reiter Lied so gut!!!
Aus Spanien unterstützen wir Könisberg als Deutschland 🇪🇸💪🏻🇩🇪
dank
I believe one day it will be liberated and restored to its former beauty.
well, germans killed a half of europe and then want their old land back? i'd say f*ck you, it will never be yours
Such a beautiful city and architecture destroyed in such brutal way I think it should not spoil the relations between Germans and Russians on the contrary this was a warning of that hostility between Europan nations has brought all such beautiful cities were compared not only German but also British, Russian,Italian,Serbian, french, etc. Rest in peace Königsberg and all victims of ww2❤️❤️😢
🥺🤍
Wir werden die Stadt mit Waffengewalt zurückerobern 👍🏻👍🏻
We will reconquer our GERMAN city with weapons!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Super wymienić Francję a nie wymienić Polski 💀
Hey Dr.Ludwig, nice Video, but wasn't there allready a similar video about Königsberg with the old Reiterlied? I can't find this one anymore, is it still online and where can i find the Reiterlied you used before?
I had to take it down, because the copyright owner ordered to give me a strike for the Ostpreußisches Reiterlied. He even betrayed me a little bit, because we had e-mail contact and even tho I did everything he wanted, he didn't take it back as promised.
Every Frenchman knows Koenigsberg, the Mountain of the King "...
Hab wirklich nie so viele seit Jahren gesehen !
I'm kind of optimistic that Putin's blunder in Ukraine will lead to Kaliningrad becoming Post-Russian (Prussia ;-) ) And having seen how Dresden, Danzig/Gdansk and Leipzig have become beautiful again let's hope the same can happen in Königsberg. Hopefully the enclave as a whole can someday embrace all of its history as Polish, Baltic, Russian, and German as an independent entity. (Kind of a Northern Switzerland)
