      There was a time, as I understand it, when the Baltic Republican Party used the name "East Prussia," but I think they found that's a problematic name for Poland, which includes a lot of territory which was once part of East Prussia. I think the name "Prussia" would have the same problem (although I do agree it's a cool sounding name).

      @lubenske5681 Sure, okay. I've made a video about what the point of a country is (Why countries aren't real). I think the point of a country should be to provide peace and prosperity to its citizens. Today, declaring independence is a very risky thing in economic terms, and should only be seriously considered when living under a brutal dictatorial regime. Russia is such a regime, so I'm sympathetic to the people who want to advocate for change. I understand the reasons why there are independence movements in Scotland, Catalonia and Texas, etc, but I think the case is weaker because the people living there live in relatively prosperous democracies. I also think there's a case for greater international integration, like the EU, for example, for precisely the same reasons, by the way.

      @@FredoRockwell I also recall that the Lithuanian government was offered it again in the mid-1950s, but the government declined, because it foresaw nothing but trouble with the, by then, large Russian population that had been imported there by Stalin. Shades of the current Ukraine situation! Also, later than that, Germany was offered it for a sum of money. The German government declined, because it was more interested in getting back East Germany. You might well have heard these before, but I thought them worth mentioning.

    It could be more than 10 years back when Poland permitted people from Kaliningrad a limited entry into Poland for short time and limited distance. Kaliningrad people took in very large numbers advantage of this offer for shopping trips. The border area of Poland received an economic boost. Poland should have never cancelled this again. Kaliningrad people would have understand the Western way of life in freedom and prosperity. The movement of independence from Russia would have grown fast and strong. The chances that there independent from Russia would have been received a big boost and who knows could be accomplished by now?

    I am also interested in independence movements in Russia, but I must say that at this point it is all speculation. Except the special case of Chechnya, we have 0 ways of understanding what the people living in these regions actually want. Accurate sociological studies are impossible to conduct in modern Russia, especially about separatism because even slightly promoting it will get you in jail. Out of the regions that are oblasts (not republics) Kaliningrad is the most likely candidate for such movement, but at the end of the day, I think russian ethnic identity and desire for unity will survive even total collapse of the state. The only real real candidates are ethnic majority republics, but also not all of them. Personally I think the most likely scenario is that Russian borders change in the north Caucasus region but not anywhere else. Maybe some regions will have significant movements for independence but they would need more time to actually succeed.

    • @FredoRockwell
      @FredoRockwell  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I agree any talk of new countries emerging from Russia is speculative, but I think if there is any breakup at all, Russia might struggle to avoid a bigger collapse. It's not possible to conduct accurate surveys and studies, as you say, but I'm not sure this would really tell us much. If Russia endures a humiliating defeat that de-legitimizes the central authorities in Moscow, I think all bets are off at this point. I am old enough to remember the break up of the Soviet Union. A year before it happened, no one thought it was possible. When Lithuania declared independence, no one really took it seriously. And yet, within a few months there were 15 new countries headed towards independence. This included new countries like Turkmenistan, which didn't really seek independence - it was thrust upon it. I don't think the collapse of the Russian Federation is likely to be as neat as Soviet Union's collapse, but I can imagine it happening. I would look to Tatarstan, Kalmykia, Bashkortostan, and other regions where there is a long history of seeking independence. If it wasn not for its geography, I would think Kaliningrad was a total longshot. Already the Baltic Sea is virtually a NATO lake. If Belarus goes democratic then Moscow could struggle to access it. If a civil war breaks out in Russia, I'm not sure Moscow would bother to access it. Meanwhile, the people of Kaliningrad (who have been economically disadantaged for decades) might be tempted by a dream of possible EU membership - if the right person or organization offers it in a tempting way. I'm speculating, but considering how much chaos might be on the horizon, I think this is a time for speculating. Whatever happens to Russia in the next 5-10 years, I'm not sure it is a scenario we can predict today. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, and if you're still reading - thanks for reading this very long reply!

      @FredoRockwell I just think that people in the west overstate the possibility of a civil war. Colapse of the current regime - sure, civil war - very unlikely. but at this point there is no certain way of telling what will happen and it is just opinions. Thanks for responding.

    • @FredoRockwell
      @FredoRockwell  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I think just the opposite - I think people understand the possibility of a civil war, actually. I hope there isn't one, and I certainly wouldn't say it's a likely occurance, but historically Russia tends to go into crisis following a military defeat. It seems likely there will be an upheaval of sorts if they lose badly in Ukraine. But that could be something other than civil war.

    Hey Fredo, good to see you again man. I was honestly surprised to find out Königsberg has a sizable independence movement, but given the history of ethnic cleansing, and the fact it that Russia obtained it in even more dubious ways than the United States obtained what was formerly Northern Mexico, it really shouldn’t have been part of Russia to begin with, but maybe that’s just me. Anyway, there are two other things I’d like to add. First off, are you aware of how many in the west have started to, in some cases satirically, but in other cases are actually serious, to advocate that Czechia should annex Königsberg, and if you are, do you think think such comments are practically harmless, potentially misguided, or perhaps something else? Secondly, I would like to suggest that for your next independence video that you cover either Tibet, or East Turkestan independence movements, as it is a potentially very interesting topic. In fact, it is quite easy for the Baltic Republic to become a successful state. There is no need to reinvent the wheel when there are successful integration options in Europe. For example, there are Monaco, Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino. And this is exactly the option of association! These countries are not part of the EU, but they have all the rights that the EEA countries have!!!! So why shouldn't the young republic repeat the success of these countries?! Association is really the right way out! And the Baltic Republic can associate with such countries as Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Czech Republic!!!! This region is historically connected with these countries and therefore for its revival it will have to integrate more actively with these countries!!!! And after the association, the new country de facto becomes a full-fledged part of Europe! This is a much more reasonable and favourable option than waiting for accession to the EU itself! And in general, I am absolutely sure that the Country of Amber Land is a real future Baltic Singapore!!!! Free and Great!!! @FredoRockwell In fact, 4 Luxemburg's and 10 Liechtenstein's would fit on the territory of Koenigsberg. I think the best option for the Baltic Republic would be an Associated State format along the lines of Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein and the Vatican! Because the EU membership itself entails a number of economic restrictions and rules, which in my opinion are more harmful to the economy of the state than beneficial. And so the option of association will truly unlock the enormous potential of this young state. And there will also be an opportunity to become a tax haven. And that would be a great plus to the resources already possessed!

      Regarding the poll, the point of a poll is not to ask every single resident in a region their opinion. That's an election. A poll takes a sample and extrapolates from it. Polling about independence for any region in Russia can't be scientific at the moment, so I don't think the 72% figure was accurate at the time, but worth noting nonetheless.

      I'm not sure I'm best qualified to answer your question, but I would guess that any Russian military installation would be considered a legitimate target by the Ukrainian military until Russia withdraws from Ukrainian territory. Now that Finland and Sweden are in NATO, Russia is the only non-NATO country on the Baltic Sea. If Belarus was to have a democratic revolution - which I would rate as a distinct possibility in the next ten years or so, this would make Kaliningrad VERY isolated geographically. I don't think NATO would ever invade Kaliningrad, but I can imagine that Russia might struggle to maintain it in the future, and - if something like the Wagner uprising happened again and was successful, well, who knows?

    The video is clickable. First, it is reported that 70% of Kaliningrad residents want independence, and then it turns out that this survey was conducted by the separatist movement. It's as if the IRA conducted a survey on the unification of Ireland. I was in Kaliningrad last summer. This is an absolutely ordinary region of Russia, with original historical places. There is no "special identity" there. Well, the phrase they want to be free and part of the European Union is an oxymoron. Well, the fact that the author still believes in the "Prigozhin rebellion" and the upcoming civil war in Russia clearly indicates his bias. The author gives wishful thinking.

    • @FredoRockwell
      @FredoRockwell  Před 8 měsíci +6

      Do you mean "clickbait?" A video being "clickable" doesn't really mean anything.
      The poll referred to in the video was conducted by Oleh Dunda's Referendum 2023 organization. Oleh Dunda is a Ukrainian MP, not a separatist of any type. The analogy with the IRA makes no sense. As I explain in the video, it's hard to know how accurate the poll is, but it is the only data we have. Also, Koenigsberg had a higher pro-independence vote than many other regions.
      Lots of free people live in the European Union. I know several Russian citizens who had to escape to the EU to be free. What an odd way of thinking you have!
      I'm not sure what you mean by "believe ins in the Prigozhin Rebellion." I think Prigozhin is a horrible person and I don't share his beliefs. I do believe that the Wagner Group rose up against the Russian state, downing multiple Russian aircraft and killing multiple Russian military personel. This did happen, and the fact that it happened and Putin fled Moscow on a plane certainly makes it clear that Russia could fall into a civil war fairly easily. Whether or not this would be a good thing is a subject of debate, but it is certainly a serious possibility now.
      As for wishful thinking, so far most of the wishful thinking has been done by Putin and his supporters, thinking they could take over Ukraine in 72 hours. However many videos I make, I don't think I will be able to do anything that "wishful."
      Thanks for watching and for your comment!

      I'm American, and when my grandfather was born Kaliningrad was Germany. When I was born it was the Soviet Union. Today it's Russia. Who knows what it will be tomorrow? 🤷
