My ancestor’s homeland. I’m impressed that despite the old city was razed, there are quite a lot of buildings preserved, albeit “Russified”.
Konigsberg!.. The jewel of the East Prussia, the emblematic city of the German nation, stays always there to remind the world, together with Silesia-Pommerania, Sud, Alsace, and many more, the tragically lost historical fatherlands of the German Nation.

Wrocław was destroyed between 70-80% - Szczecin in 70% and the rest of these cities were destroyed in the urban substance in the range of 30-95%. Now take a look at what Polish cities look like. Built - restored - they were restored to their former shape - even though we had no money and our capital was destroyed in 95%. We did it in parallel. Of course, a significant percentage of it could not be restored - it was mainly due to the fact that we had over the heads of communists who did not like the restoration of German monuments and often their opinion was final. Exactly - now let's look at Kalilingrad. The city was destroyed no more than the Polish one - and what does it look like now? The nation of Germany followed Hitler and although it may be unfair the German people had to pay just as the far greater Soviet casualties had to paid. You could say that US policy in the Middle East and in particular with Israel made 9-11 inevitable but on that same basis 9-11 made the devastating attack on Afghanistan just as inevitable as the Taliban insisted on giving Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda sanctuary. GWB and Blair got away with their lies to invade Iraq in 2003 which was only possible because of the post 9-11 atmosphere just as many Germans supported Hitler even with all his obvious lies.
While the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was terrible it pales in comparison to the deaths and devastation caused by Germany's opening of World War II with well over 20,000,000 Soviet deaths, millions of Poles and others plus 6,000,000 Jews going up in smoke.ironically about the same number of Germans who lost their lives in World War II.
Also what war against Russia are you referring to? the war against Chechnya, South Ossetia, Abkhazia (both of which were launched to keep Georgia from exerting control over both. Or maybe you're referring to the war in Luhansk and Donetsk. Russia annexed the Crimea with no repercussions other than economic measures.The West has not been at war with the USSR or the Russian Federation at any time so I don't know what you are talking about.
Maybe you're talking of the US not recognizing the invasion and incorporation of the Baltic states into the USSR, In any case as you well know the US never intervened in the USSR or the Russian Federation although they did arm the mujaheddin (which may have been a mistake in my view) but it was the USSR who invaded Afghanistan hardly even equal to the Vietnam war although if you view it that way I'll go along with you.
However the Soviets backed the invasion of South Korea which was a clear war of aggression. Even in 1947 while the Jews accepted the UN partition plan the Arabs would not. If they had their Palestinian state would have been larger than Israel is today with Jerusalem and Bethlehem as neutral areas under UN control. I might add that the USSR, the Ukraine, Bellorussia and all the Warsaw Pact nations voted in the UN for Israel's independence. At the time it was seen as standing up to British power in the area, a very short term way of thinking I'm sure you would agree or maybe you wouldn't? Why don't you tell me?. .

It's good to know the prehistory of the city, and not just to show "before and after". The city was completely bombed by British aviation in 1945. The territory of Eastern Prussia (part of it, the southern part of Prussia left for Poland) withdrew to USSR by the decision of the Potsdam Conference. Great Britain, USSR, USA decided the fate of defeated Germany. After the war the city was completely destroyed, all production, living houses, historical buildings. The USSR was going through hard times (52 million people died in the war and in the rear, production was focused only on weapons, hunger reigned).
Of course, all efforts were made to restore the destroyed cities of central Russia. Koningsberg was restored by the military and prisoners. No one cares about historical values. Attitude to everything Germanic from the USSR was very negative. It is understandable, so many people died because of war with German. For a long time Kaliningrad was in stagnation, it was forgotten. But as the economy develops, the city develops, and as you can see on the video, many historical values have been lost, but much has been preserved to this day. Some buildings are being restored, for example a synagogue on one of the slides was rebuilt this year. Of course, not in such a stunning architecture, but also very similar.
Yes, Royal Air Forces bombed this city and destroyed big part of Prussian buildings. And Soviet soldiers did. Many cities of Europe had been crushed during the war but citizens restored their own hometown. Koenigsberg is different, but the same with another captured by USSR towns. Soviets had no money, motivation and culture interest to restore and consirvate.
You can see in the west part of Berlin something like Soviet decadence and can see this destructive influence on the streets of current Koenigsberg. Maybe if Prussians kept live there they would give a new live to this city.
Doesn't matter who destroyed. More important who gave a opportunity to restore.
I think Russia need to give kaliningrad to the rightful owner of that zone.

you need to know, there is substantial German minority living in Kaliningrad today, they are Russian-germans, they moved there from deep Russia and Siberia !

Stimmt wohl, doch die Zeit zwischen den Kriegen, war für viele Bewohner problematisch. Viele verloren z. B. ihre Anstellung (Juden, Halbjuden, ...). Eine hübsche Stadt in denen die Nationalsozialisten mit ihren unmenschlichen Methoden herrschten. Das wird in der Regel vergessen.

Russia is still holding onto the Keralia region of No.Eastern Finland that was seized by Stalin's USSR prior to Germany's declaration of war and/or op.Barbarossa. Finland never sided with the nazi's and and this war got USSR expelled from the league of nations. If they will not even give this back why then would they give their foothold in the Baltic? I suspect Putin will find a "sudatenland" pretext to take much of Ukraine in the near future as they did in Ossetia.

Not true, at one stage Königsberg was the capital of Prussia and in effect the capital of Germany. East Prussia was the "bread basket" of Germany and culturally the most important province of Germany. The nation of Germany was forged in Prussia's image and Prussia actually founded Germany!!! The main traits associated with Germany today are actually all Prussian traditions. Underdeveloped???

Its while ago but you made a nice video. I was there in 2016 with my own car, my son and his mother. From the hotel in Zelenogradsk we went by train to Kaliningrad to have a day sightseeing. I hope you will make video's from more cities and villages in the Oblast. I am from the Netherlands. Our voluntairy free guide did not even know the General Laschbunker excists. So i told her to visit it (!). : )

Und statt den Russen alle Schuld in die Schuhe zu schieben, die selbst 24 mio Tote zu beklagen haben, könntet ihr auf sich selbst zeigen und fragen, warum z.B. der Gauleiter Erich Koch so viele Menschen in Ostpreußen in den Tod gestürzt hat, indem er verboten hatte, aus Ostpreußen auszureisen? Uns selbst ganz bequem mit Hab und Gut nach Hamburg fliehen konnte. Und dafür nie richtig bestraft wurde, auch wenn er neben Preußen in Polen und der Ukraine Millionen Menschen auf seinem Gewissen hat. Wer solche skrupellosen Führer hat, braucht sich nicht zu wundern, warum so viele Gebiete nicht mehr deutsch sind und was passiert, wenn Deutsche diese Frage ernsthaft diskutieren anfangen.

Johann Lißewski, my grandfather, was born near Koenigsberg. During the first world war, my father was sent to a farm nearby owned by his Johann's brother. It save his life from childhood stavation. I have a picture of his uncle, with his grandchildren from 1938. Where are they. What were their names? Did they live after World War II? No one knows.

In meiner Kindheit (1944) gab es französische Kriegsgefangene die auf den Feldern gearbeitet haben, sympathische Männer. Ein Nachbar, ein Bauer war im 1.WK in französischer Gefangenschaft gewesen, ein anderer in russischer Gefangenschaft, sie sprachen gut über diese Zeit. Die Zeit ist für viele schwierig geworden. Da ist es nicht unbedingt einfach einen Weg zu finden, besonders wenn die Lebensbedingungen schwieriger werden. Was Kaliningrad betrifft, ich weis nicht weshalb mich diese Stadt besonders ihre Vergangenheit als Königsberg so fasziniert. Habe Bücher aus der Vorkriegszeit von Fotografen und Lyrikern von dieser Stadt und ihrer Umgebung. Kannte Ostpreußen mit ihrer schönen Mundart und ihrem Können. Das waren keine von Minderwertigkeit geplagten Menschen, obwohl sie Ihre Heimat, auch ihre Güter verloren hatten.
Min 00:55 the Neue Synagoge was exactly as it is shown on the video; empty land, but now there's a new synagoge erected in the place of the old one, looking pretty much as the old one did .....
same story with Danzing (Gdanks), but the Polish rebuild the old town.... It should be do also in Kaliningrad!

Actualy now seeing this cool video I see some old landmarks were actualy rebuilt or reconstructed. It seams that the most destroyed part of the city was along the waterfront and that hasnt been repaired after the war...
It's time for all Germans,Poles and Russians living in Konigsberg to unite and struggle to get back their lands in former German Silesia, Pomerania, Prussia etc. and Polish Kresy.

Is war the only solution for getting back the lands?
We had war before i.e. both world wars to get more territory but instead of gaining it, many millions were forcefully expelled from their homelands. Not only in Europe even India and Pakistan after Independence had suffered the same by partition.
So why war? Why not do it peacefully?

On the matter of UKR i cant say 100% exactly as i dont know the background on what was going in UKR at the time, but i do know that communists attaked Poland so i gues same rules apply as to Germany, Poland has the right to west UKR

Another thing is that Germans and Poles living in former eastern territories are not full Germans. Many are descended from Silesians, Prussians, Poles etc. even in their culture, arts etc. do you find these elements.

After Germany's defeat in World War I, under the pressure of winning countries (the U.S., France, United Kingdom), Germany was forced to cede some of its territories in the lower reaches of the river Vistula, plus 71-mile segment of the Baltic Sea to Poland, which thus has access to the Baltic sea and therefore isolated (at least in the land) the territory of East Prussia.

The castle is no more. The communist soviets thought it would be a great idea to destroy the last remaining walls and tower and on top of that, build an ugly as heck building that isn't even being used. No wonder everyone hated the soviet union.

To stay in Russia! The Germans left in the last months of the war and the Soviet Union imported a new population from east of the Urals. Read your history before asking rhetorical questions.
I can't understand why the Oblast of Kaliningrad was left as an exclave to Russia instead of been given To Poland or Lithuania or stayed as a german exclave. I read somewhere of a project to rebuild the downtown as it was :)
Neither Poland nor Lithuania wanted Kaliningrad, Khrushchev actually did offer Kaliningrad to Lithuania but they refused; and the german government was worried because Britain, France and Italy didn't fully support german reunification, so, pushing the claim over Kaliningrad would have alienated the western europeans powers.

@1975USSR many buildings was only damaged easy to rebuild but it did not happen were destroyed because was german(moskwa decision) and that is why city looks like only shadow of old konigsberg

The Russians trying to build up Kaliningrad's German history is laughable since they basically forced all the Germans living there out from their homes, destroyed anything even remotely smelling of German History and culture and made it into basically a Soviet military base complete with ugly, poorly built Soviet architecture.
The Ukrainians do the same thing to a certain extent of building up Odessa as a "Jewish" city. They drove out the Jews through the pogroms of the late 19th century. Any Jews or Jewish culture that was left was driven out by the Soviets. Their culture and architecture replaced by Soviet monstrosities...LOL...
How about the German monstrosities of killing 22 millions soviets who did nothing to the germans in apparently surprise invasions? Isn't it was this event that perpetrated the demise of königsberg in the first place?
Edit: I did not approve what the Soviets did to the city after the war has ended. My point is, if the Germans never invade Soviet Union, there will be no Kaliningrad today.

Speaking about losing beautiful cities in WWII is also belonging to Germany which it has been unfairly taken from its many territories in Versailles treaty! The vast country of Russia comprises multiple languages, multiple religions, multiple ethnic groups, and multiple cultures. They all have the right to speak they own native languages, granted they also know the common Russian language, it's not different than many other multi-ethnic countries. As for the Germans in Kaliningrad, they have every right to preserve and speak their beautiful and rich German language. But the fact is that Königsberg is now Kaliningrad. The German wanted the _Lebensraum,_ by stealing other people's land after massacring them, they gambled and they lost and it's time to adjust the clock.
