  • Rachel Alexandra turned in yet another dominating performance in a campaign for the ages when she captured the $1.25 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) on a sloppy track at Monmouth Park before a crowd of 37,009 Aug. 2.
    With regular rider Calvin Borel at the controls, Rachel Alexandra raced three-wide just off the pacesetter Munnings , took charge leaving the final turn and drew off under some left-handed urging to win by six lengths. It was her second win over males -- she won the Preakness (gr. I) May 16 -- and improved her record to seven-for-seven in 2009. She has won eight races in a row.
    The impressive winning time for the 1 1/8-mile test was 1:47 21, just two ticks off the track mark set by Spend a Buck in 1985 (1:46.80). Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Summer Bird finished second, with two-time grade II winner Munnings third.

    My friends and I, who decided to go to Monmouth to see the "super filly", were stuck on the Jersey Turnpike for hours that day. Having left DC at 11 am, we finally made it to the track with 9 minutes to post. We ran into the track and found a place to stand along the rail near the finish line. The people standing next to us had driven up from Richmond, hoping to see greatness. We all saw it that day. When she came down the stretch, out in front, everyone was weeping. I'll never forget it.

      Totally agree with all of that. Ruffian vs Rachel would be a joy to watch if they were contemporaries. Perhaps if the rest of her career had been as good as her 3 year old season. She is not superior to Ruffian, Zenyatta, Genuine Risk or Personal Ensign. Rachel didn't display the longevity or the consistency to attain that level of greatness. She ducked Zenyatta at the Blossom because her connections knew she couldn't beat Zenyatta after getting trounced by Zenyatta's stablemate. Great horse, not legendary.

      We'll never know what this horse could have done. After her 3 yr old season they let stand in a stall for 7 months, gain a ton of weight. Then rushed her back without any real training the fact that she did as well as she did without breaking down is a wonder in itself. I believe all of her stupid connections should have been brought up on charges. What a waste. She was a freak, just flat out fast, faster than Ruffian and she didn't break down. Faster Than Zen and much more of a race horse. Zen was a pet, another horse we will never know what she was really made of. Her connections afraid to lose.These great horse ruined by stupid people, sad... (JMHO) Rachel head and shoulders above the rest...

    • @reallytooy3187
      @reallytooy3187 Před 7 lety +3

      That's false, they knew she was not in great shape and were not going to push her in a race she had not chance in. RA would have left Zen in the dust had the ever met. Zen never came close in the competition RA faced, did not do jack in the oaks, preakness, wood, etc... Sure she's good, but she was never challenged let alone with boys like RA was, and when she did she lost.

And don't get me wrong, I know sometimes the jockeys get quite overzealous in their use of the "spank"....... But many times its only to keep a "lone" horse interested........ She didn't win every race by open lengths...... Its a tactic used for the "next race" in case they do get in a dog fight...... Remember Affirmed and Alydar? Steve Cauthen had NEVER hit Affirmed left handed..... But he did in the Belmont that day........ So those jockeys know what their "BIG" horses need from time to time...... A tick off Secy's track record pace. From the 13 hole In the Preakness she became the 1st filly in 85 years to beat the boys. She fought evry horse in the race INCLUDING the Ky Derby runner up and American Pharaoh's daddy "Pioneer of the Nile" who tried breaking her early. He had his racing heart handed to him and finished 26 lengths behind Rachel. She then won the Mother Goose in 1:46 completely EASED the last 1/16 of a mile. lol 1:33 mile... Otherwise Secretariats 45 year old track record falls. In the Haskell against Super Stallion Munnings and the Belmont winner Summer Bird she absolutely destroyed them by 6 lengths & once again eased the last 1/16th on a Sloppy track barely missing ANOTHER Track record. Then, She became the 1st filly in 125 years to beat older males in a New York Route race which included the previous years Belmont winner Da Tara (Big Brown) who tried frying her on the front end. LAUGH out loud to you for disrespecting the Greatest 3 year old filly to EVER look thru a Bridle. Unfortunately her connections made a mistake by taking her out of training for 6 months therefore compromising a 4 year old season. Her accomplishments as a 3 year old speak louder than any Critics words. She was a PHYSICAL Goddess Monster. Ever SEE her in Person? You won't EVER see her likes again...Unbeatable when prepared.
